LET ME CORRECT THE SUBJECT LINE "WEGMAN'S" => "WEGMANS"

R.I.P. Concrete Octopus ]-`: is a guy with a belly button piercing (ex machina), Monday, 20 March 2006 16:20 (twenty years ago)

WEGMANS would win but they haven't opened a store in nyc yet!

stockholm cindy is a guy with a belly button piercing (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 20 March 2006 16:33 (twenty years ago)

There is no room in NYC for the goodness of Wegmans. We should just turn Union Square into a Wegmans. Fuck high school students, vendors in booths and fucking drum circle BS. WE NEED A WEGMANS NOT A SHITTY "OPEN SPACE" (OPEN SPACE MY BUTT, WHAT GOOD IS GRASS YOU CAN'T WALK ON??)

R.I.P. Concrete Octopus ]-`: is a guy with a belly button piercing (ex machina), Monday, 20 March 2006 16:37 (twenty years ago)

oh how i miss the wegmans, and it's only been a month! we were in the "BI~LO" here the other day and ended up leaving the cart in the middle of the store and walking out becaue they had no plain yogurt, no tofu other than silken, and tomatoes that looked like they'd just escaped a domestic violence situation (yet were still mad expensive).

tehresa (tehresa), Monday, 20 March 2006 16:40 (twenty years ago)

if i ever somehow end up living in rochester again, for reasons i can't actually imagine right now and hope i never discover, wegmans will be one of the few consolations.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Monday, 20 March 2006 17:53 (twenty years ago)

(i haven't been to trader joe's yet, but i'm declaring wegmans the winner on general principle)

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Monday, 20 March 2006 17:53 (twenty years ago)

There's lots of other places with Wegmans, homes! Yea, FFS Wegmans store brand products are like 1000x better than the store brand products that we get here :(

R.I.P. Concrete Octopus ]-`: is a guy with a belly button piercing (ex machina), Monday, 20 March 2006 17:54 (twenty years ago)

i told my mother weg's has store brand tofu and she was like ORLY!?

tehresa (tehresa), Monday, 20 March 2006 18:00 (twenty years ago)

there are some wegmans in nj but i dunno where exactly. it's on the website.

stockholm cindy is a guy with a belly button piercing (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 20 March 2006 18:06 (twenty years ago)

http://www.wegmans.com/about/storeLocator/results.asp?region=7

there's one in princeton! so when we finally make it down there for PREX-ing we can make a wegmans run too!

stockholm cindy is a guy with a belly button piercing (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 20 March 2006 18:07 (twenty years ago)

granted, ive yet to enter a trader joes..but im going to have to side with wegmans....ive spent hours in wegman's (note: this does not include trips under the influence of the sort of grass soo plentiful in ithaca). though i didn't eat meat then, so maybe trader joes would have more appeal now.

bb (bbrz), Monday, 20 March 2006 18:11 (twenty years ago)

i think wegmans used to have a dc area store, but apparently no more. i like that the west coast choice here is more urban than the east coast one.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 20 March 2006 18:28 (twenty years ago)

well wegmans is basically an upstate ny thing (specifically rochester, but there are stores in the finger lakes and southern tier areas too), but they've recently expanded into a couple other states. it's not like wegmans is some nationwide phenomenon yet.

stockholm cindy is a guy with a belly button piercing (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 20 March 2006 18:34 (twenty years ago)

evidently wegmans is one of them "good corporations" too.

bb (bbrz), Monday, 20 March 2006 18:37 (twenty years ago)

actually they have fairfax and dulles stores, but I thought there was one in NW or MontCo

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 20 March 2006 18:57 (twenty years ago)

you'd think there would be but there is only one in hunt valley

they didn't even have baked tofu until about 5 years ago! and their sushi bars suck. PLUS, no sit-down cafes.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Monday, 20 March 2006 23:59 (twenty years ago)

Kroger does not exist to to provide u with sushi, tofu, cafes, and other mutli-ethnic Eurasian crap. It's a GODDAM GROCERY STORE.

(Nevertheless, I have been in at least two (2) Krogers w/ sit-down cafes.)

m[ad(a)m]an (UL®) (blastocyst), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 00:07 (twenty years ago)

well ok i've been in a kroger with a hot-dog stand.

but you are exhibiting pre-wegmans thinking about what a grocery store should be.

also, wegmans subs are GOOD. can kroger make you a buffalo chicken fingers sub (or chicken parm sub)!? also, weg's prepared foods are good - chicken french, amazing lentil soup with just the right amount of spicy kick, etc. and their baguettes are awesome.

Do they have a pharmacy?

m[ad(a)m]an (UL®) (blastocyst), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 00:57 (twenty years ago)

of course! my former roommate worked at the wegmans pharmacy!

tehresa (tehresa), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 00:58 (twenty years ago)

m[ad(a)m]an (UL®) (blastocyst), Tuesday, 21 March 2006 01:03 (twenty years ago)

there is no wegmans in knoxville! there is just kroger, food lion, food city, red foods, various other stores with "food" in the name, but no wegmans!

dear heavens. a wegmans just opened up in my hometown and i can't stop hearing about it. apparently it is literally the closest human beings have come to recreating heaven. except less expensive. it's situated right between a harris teeter and a trader joes and i actually feel bad for the harris teeter and the trader joes.

i'll have to check it out before i move. although apparently i've been 15 minutes away from one outside DC for several years now? before this month i thought it was walgreen's.

God, this stupid thing has been in the works ever since I moved back to Maryland from San Diego, which corresponds roughly to the entire time I've been posting to ilx. My parents are out of town for the summer, so I have no reason to go up to Columbia and visit it, and I sort of doubt that I'll make it to Wegman's once they get back, since they live right next to the Harris Teeter.

how's life, Thursday, 23 August 2012 13:04 (thirteen years ago)

But basically, this is the grocery store that no one would shut up about.

i like the idea of a grocery store destroying an idyllic suburb

kneel aurmstrong (harbl), Thursday, 23 August 2012 13:35 (thirteen years ago)

Nope. Maryland, born and bred. I've never had a positive experience in a plains state either, so that's pretty weird.

how's life, Thursday, 23 August 2012 13:36 (thirteen years ago)

To be fair, everything destroyed that idyllic suburb, but I'll defend it as having once been super-idyllic.

how's life, Thursday, 23 August 2012 13:37 (thirteen years ago)

When they built condos right next to Merriweather Post Pavillion and the new residents tried to shut MPP down because of the noise, that was the end of the dream, imo.

how's life, Thursday, 23 August 2012 13:39 (thirteen years ago)

i was underwhelmed. hunt valley is better wegmans.

kneel aurmstrong (harbl), Thursday, 23 August 2012 19:57 (thirteen years ago)

in buffalo the wegmans are not simply a suburban phenomenon fwiw. they all have distinct vibes, too.

horseshoe, Thursday, 23 August 2012 23:41 (thirteen years ago)

yeah there was a wide variety of wegmans in the rochester area. i consider myself a wegmans expert and i thought i would be broadening my horizons by visiting both* two of maryland's wegmans but they were the same. hunt valley felt more spacious and i prefer a flat open suburban parking lot to a parking garage. also i feel resentful of the whole store when i go on a weekday and there are still too many people. additionally many of the rochester wegmans were open 24 hours. maryland wegmans sux!

*nevermind while i was fact-checking this i learned there are 5 of them and one opening in crofton on 10/28

kneel aurmstrong (harbl), Friday, 24 August 2012 00:49 (thirteen years ago)

they have an FAQ on their site and one of them is a question i have been asking myself for years:

Why is there no apostrophe in Wegmans?
Answer: It's been missing in action since 1931, when the company incorporated and we simplified the logo. Believe it or not, adding an apostrophe to the sign on the front of each of our stores would cost more than a half million dollars! Not to mention changing the logo on all our products, bags, etc. Just think of it as the plural Wegmans, as in the many generations of Wegman family members that have built the company! If you are interested in Wegmans History, check out our Timeline.

kneel aurmstrong (harbl), Friday, 24 August 2012 00:55 (thirteen years ago)

look at this quarterstaff (Hurting 2), Friday, 24 August 2012 01:48 (thirteen years ago)

I think Wegmans vs. Fairway would be a more interesting poll, although it would require people who have lived both in NYC and a Wegmans-having suburb.

I love some things in Fairway but I get the sense that it's a bit in decline with all the competition from Whole Foods on the high end, and TJ's and Costco on the low end. Then again I think the company is IPOing so who knows, maybe they'll expand further.
