elmo, holy helper (allocryptic), Monday, 27 March 2006 15:06 (twenty years ago)

meeting street
east side pockets
au bon pain
kartabar
paragon

also ocean coffee around the corner

dar1a g (daria g), Monday, 27 March 2006 20:20 (twenty years ago)

spike's is ok by me as well, I went to all those places a lot but tried geoff's once & it was shitty.

dar1a g (daria g), Monday, 27 March 2006 20:21 (twenty years ago)

a) east side pockets aren't sandwiches. they are POCKETS. there are no deli style meats or cheeses.
b) paragon & kartabar == hip eateries for white jerks in striped shirts SO BOGUS
c) ocean is closed

elmo, holy helper (allocryptic), Monday, 27 March 2006 20:27 (twenty years ago)

wha? no ocean coffee? oh no. I haven't been to providence for almost a year.

paragon & kartabar are OK in daytime when not crowded. the burgers are good! i'm just saying. kartabar is v annoying at night though

OK, switch out johnny rockets for east side if you have to. grilled cheese or tuna salad, fries & milkshake at johnny rockets = not bad.

au bon pain and johnny rocket's contribute very little to new ideas or diy scene building.

R.I.P. West Village Bird Shaman ]-`: (ex machina), Monday, 27 March 2006 20:56 (twenty years ago)

hey now, I have had a lot of conversations about dissertation projects and film festivals in teh johnny rockets (no kidding).. uh, the problem was my scene was grad school, this is why I had to leave providence

dar1a g (daria g), Monday, 27 March 2006 22:10 (twenty years ago)

johnny rockets is one of the worst dining establishments i've ever been to. (but i only went there once and it was the one near NYU.)

send your men of science quick (Jody Beth Rosen), Monday, 27 March 2006 22:49 (twenty years ago)

every neighborhood has at least one locally-owned deli establishment that blows the freaking doors off johnny rockets or any other chain joint.

the one in my neighborhood is called "mardini's", it's an italian deli owned and operated by jordanians. they wear exercise gear while they cook - and i don't mean tracksuits joey buttafucco style, i mean spandex tour de france tops and shit. last night i had a chicken burger and the dude's boombox played some arabic music, some michael jackson, some "all night long", some usher, some farsi music and some britney spears.

uh, what?

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 7 May 2008 18:03 (eighteen years ago)

the bread lacks structural integrity and must be wrapped in foil in order to be eaten, it is closer in nature to a fucking burrito than to a sandwich

jackass

Pita is used to scoop sauces or dips such as hummus and to wrap sandwiches like kebabs, gyros or falafel. Most pita breads are baked at high temperatures (700°F or 370°C), causing the flattened rounds of dough to puff up dramatically. When removed from the oven the layers of baked dough remain separated inside the deflated pita, which allows the bread to be opened into pockets, creating a space for use in various dishes.

PITA CONTROVERSY

Edward III, Thursday, 8 May 2008 13:59 (eighteen years ago)

John Montagu is said to have been immoral in both his private and public life, and gambling was just one of his lesser vices. He was the First Lord of the Admiralty, incompetent and very corrupt. In fact, it is very likely that he indirectly contributed to the success of the American Revolution because of his malfeasance as the chief admiral of the English navy. According to Jane Polley, “Sandwich managed to reduce the British Navy to a state of total confusion around the time that the American Revolution started — a contribution at least as significant as the munchable lunch.”

The Earl was a member of a group of Satan Worshippers called “The Friars of St. Francis of Wycombe”, also known as “The Hell Fire Club”. He boasted that he specialized in seducing virgins because he enjoyed “the corruption of innocence, for its own sake.” Sandwich was the executive officer of the Club and was described as being “as mischievous as a monkey and as lecherous as a goat.” He was also called “the most universally disliked man in England.” According to Daniel Mannix in his The Hell Fire Club, “In addition to being anti-religious, Sandwich was violently anti-democratic. He despised the general public and opposed any public figure who tried to get a better break for the common man. Because of his friendship with the King and his control of the English Navy, Sandwich was one of the most important men of the time and exerted a profound influence on the destiny of the British Empire.”

Sandwich: Sir, I do not know whether you will die on the gallows or of the pox.
John Wilkes: That will depend, my lord, on whether I embrace your principles or your mistress.
