pwned I'd say

m[ad(a)m]an (UL®) (blastocyst), Monday, 27 March 2006 23:19 (twenty years ago)

unfreakingbelievable! well, at least it was quick. centipedes have neurotoxic jaws, right? it looked like the mouse was dead after a couple seconds.

god made the mouse and the centipede, and both have to eat. and it sort of sucks for bugs that nobody gets sad when they see a bird w/ a bill stuffed full of crickets or a mongoose eating a snake's head. that said, i wouldn't mind seeing a sequel where an army of a dozen or so vengeful ninja mice run in from the side of the frame and chew the caterpillar to bits, leg by leg.

one time i was cycling on these cliffs that are infested w/ field mice and squirrels and a hawk swooped past my head ... he had his claws on a mouse (or maybe a little squirrel) and he had it by the shoulders. the mouse's rear legs were hanging down and the poor guy wasn't even struggling. in fact, my first thought was "whoa, a mouse hangliding with a hawk". that was sort of weird, i didn't know what to think cause i've had pet mice but OTOH hawks are pretty dope.

why does a duck need a hangglider? i call bullshit.

gbx (skowly), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 00:48 (twenty years ago)

yeah, apparently the venom of those south american giant centipedes (of which this was one) are pretty toxic to humans, but i couldn't really find anything indicating to what degree.

god made the mouse and the centipede, and both have to eat. and it sort of sucks for bugs that nobody gets sad when they see a bird w/ a bill stuffed full of crickets or a mongoose eating a snake's head. that said, i wouldn't mind seeing a sequel where an army of a dozen or so vengeful ninja mice run in from the side of the frame and chew the caterpillar to bits, leg by leg.

haha, YUS! except, y'know, fuck bugs dude. if i was a billionaire I would create a philanthropic organization dedicated to eradicating those things from the face of the earth. it is interesting that this is super unsettling to me, but i am unfazed/heartily entertained by footage of regular animals eating each other. it just seems UNNATURAL for a bug to be able to do that. here's a giant isopod!

bugs are sort of terrible, because they live ONLY to eat.

life of a male bug:

BORN EAT EAT EAT EAT EAT EAT EAT EAT EAT EAT EAT EAT EAT EAT EAT EAT RAPE EAT EAT EAT EAT EAT EAT EAT EAT EAT EAT EAT EAT EAT DIE

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 00:54 (twenty years ago)

seriously, hell is being the prey of bugs

Dominique (dleone), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 00:55 (twenty years ago)

females basically the same give or take an "EAT FATHER OF CHILDREN LIMB BY LIMB" and "LAY EGGS" in there.

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 00:55 (twenty years ago)

OTOH i guess fish have similar lifestyles so who are we to say?

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 00:56 (twenty years ago)

that's just about the worst/coolest thing i've seen today.

a bug eating a mammal whole blows my mind. i'm tempted to write that video off as some chris cunningham hoax

smokemon (eman), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 01:02 (twenty years ago)

that would make you look pretty dumb, though.

also, looking at pictures of arthropods all day has made me decide to never eat shellfish again. crabs are just underwater cockroaches!!!!

eh, where's the thread on ILE that's about "pick one animal species you would like eradicated" or whatever?

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 01:14 (twenty years ago)

serious question, tho unrelated to arthropodia. i need to add the platypus and the slow ioris.

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 01:20 (twenty years ago)

expost - i said i'm TEMPTED TO, not i would. i just don't want to believe that the closeup shot of that thing's head chomping into a ball of bloody fur is real, and not some sort of animatronic puppetry. trying to sleep 2nite should be interesting.

Giant isopod made me think of Cronenberg too. Except it's 10x more gross - maybe it's that Cronenberg infuses the gross with sex(y) in such a way that the gross becomes less so. But a giant bug sitting on a binder? ugh.

damn. i just watched the video. all those legs.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 03:29 (twenty years ago)

the isopod looks awesome, i want one

I finally saw 'naked lunch' a few weeks ago (it's not very good at all).. holy shit. nobody warned me about the centipedes! we get house centipedes where I live, they are a different kind and not dangerous but very, very, very gross. i'm really glad i didn't click to see what the video was, I'd have a massive panic attack (for real).

I have long believed this about lobsters. Exoskeletal seafood makes me sick. Stop breaking open the crunchy exteriors and many legs of freaky sea animals to consume their meaty insides--you are eating sea bugs, sickos.

Laura H. (laurah), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 07:57 (twenty years ago)

Also, on the "related videos" bit - "giant centipede eating mouse 2", the following description:

"Centipedes have very poor eyesight and this mouse was very adept at staying out of harms way so we had to use a long feather to help it out a little."

That's cheating!

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 08:08 (twenty years ago)

i made it through like 20 seconds of this before realizing that if i watched any more of it i was seriously going to puke. and i'm not really that squeamish.

FINALLY AN ISSUE THE CHRISTIAN RIGHT AND I CAN AGREE ON

latebloomer: band to the planet mars (latebloomer), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 15:34 (twenty years ago)

there is a word i'm looking for, it has to do with perversion of natural categories, mortification, man into beasts, etc. what is it? it's on the tip of my tongue. think david cronenberg.

I still don't know what this word is, but I'm reading a book called The Philosophy of Horror, and it says this: "In her classic study Purity and Danger, Mary Douglas correlates reactions of impurity with the transgression or violation of schemes of cultural categorization. In her interpretation of the abominations of Leviticus, for example, she hypothesizes that the reason crawling things from the sea, like lobsters, are regarded as impure is that crawling was a defining feature of earthbound creatures, not of creatures of the sea. A lobster, in other words, is a kind of category mistake and, hence, impure."
