The only recording I have is the split w/ Vibracathedral, and I really like it, but I haven't been so keen on him live. What say you?

Ian c=====8 (orion), Thursday, 19 August 2004 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

the double LP with the multi-color circle on the cover (sorry i don't have the title handy).

DESCRIBE IT. IS IT ELECTRONIC? GUITAR?

Ian c=====8 (orion), Thursday, 19 August 2004 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

IT SOUNDS LIKE SHUFFLING NOISES OVER SUPER OVERLOADED GUITAR DRONES

())(())()()()(()(LASER)()()()LA(Z)E(R)()()()((L)()()(A)(S(E)R()()()) (ex machina, Thursday, 19 August 2004 19:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I think everything he's done is guitar based. Guitar loops, drones, "solos" etc. The Sunroof I've heard was more "pretty" but also a bit more "boring" then what he had done previously as Total, which I went on about in that other thread. UK noise is awesome. Vibracathedral involves Neil Campbell right? I have some old A Band cassette. Matthew Bower's collaboration with Richard Youngs I don't remember liking much, but it was a really cool cardboard package.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 19 August 2004 19:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Some of this Sunroof! stuff is definitely synths and electronics.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Thursday, 19 August 2004 19:40 (twenty-one years ago)

the show at free103 was terrible
other (related) shows I've seen since then were a little better

Russ (Russ), Thursday, 19 August 2004 19:51 (twenty-one years ago)

he was all right with Marc Orleans, despite the latter always looking really fucking weird whenever he plays.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 19 August 2004 19:57 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, the duo with Marc sounded pretty good out by the door at Tommy's where I was collecting $ for the bands...

Russ (Russ), Thursday, 19 August 2004 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Is Marc the guy from Juneau/Boston(the city, not the band) or is that a different Marc?

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 19 August 2004 20:03 (twenty-one years ago)

i like delicate autobahn under construction, and his new band with Marcia is WAY better than anything else he's done (at least the 3" i heard)

much prefer the first Bradley / Campbell tapes tho

roger adultery (roger adultery), Thursday, 19 August 2004 20:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Marc is from Boston, and is in Sunburned Hand of Yo Mama's Private Press Limited Edition CDR Fifteen Sweaty Beardos in a Van with the Man on My Tail Band.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 19 August 2004 20:07 (twenty-one years ago)

I thought Hototogisu was kinda yawn, but it was nice how they just started playing and it took me a couple minutes to figure out that I should turn the Bob Ashley records off.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 19 August 2004 20:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Marc was in Juneau and Spore back when he lived in Boston, and currently plays in Sunburned Hand Of The Man and Enos Slaughter.
He used to play in Fall In Love with Kyp Malone and Kevin Shea, but considering how busy TVOTR has been, I don't think they're active at the moment...

Marc played with Matthew (and Moloney from Sunburned) as Sunroof, at Tonic, not long after the free103 show, and from all accounts it was a lot better.

Russ (Russ), Thursday, 19 August 2004 20:09 (twenty-one years ago)

see I thought that incarnation of Sunroof! was BLAH, much better without the crap drummer.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 19 August 2004 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

man I am losing scene pointz as we speak.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 19 August 2004 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah...Juneau was his old band, sent records to oberlin's radio station when I was MD.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 19 August 2004 20:10 (twenty-one years ago)

Total had it's moments, but Skullflower (especially the lo-fi druggy improv late period..."Argon" and "This Is...") was most rulin'.
haven't heard that last Skullflower record that came out on Tumult, which I understand to be Matthew Bower solo anyway.

Julian Bradey rules for this sorta thing...the CD comp on Veglia...so good I gave it to my dad.

Russ (Russ), Thursday, 19 August 2004 20:14 (twenty-one years ago)

That last Skullflower CD got such great reviews, total raves, and sounded so cool from the description, "heavy metal steve reich" that I bought it and was pretty dissapointed it. Maybe it just sounds like it wasn't well mastered, if at all.

I know lo-fi recording and such is part of the aesthethic of lots of "noise" and all, but often I feel like bands are shooting themselves in the foot.

Like some Dead C and lots of Skullflower I remember always thinking I wished the drums didn't sound like they were hitting cardboard boxes in the next room.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 19 August 2004 20:20 (twenty-one years ago)

"Operation Of The Sonne" was a comparatively decent recording, and coincidentally, that's my favorite Dead C LP.

I believe I read an interview with Bruce Russell long ago where he said that the recordings weren't necessarily bad...that it was the way their amps actually sounded live.

Russ (Russ), Thursday, 19 August 2004 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah that's right the recording is legit; its the amps that are like that -- good too, bcz they are far better than the lo-fi aesthetic they are lumped with.

sunroof- I haven't enjoyed anything I heard from them nor did i like sunroof! when I saw them live a few months ago with double leopards.

fave dead C: 'clyma est mort' 'operation..' and 'repent' but I don't think I've ever heard a bad record from them.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 19 August 2004 20:48 (twenty-one years ago)

I have no problem with anything on those records except for the drums at times.

http://www.apexonline.com/freek/catalogue.html

I have 18 of these records.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 19 August 2004 20:57 (twenty-one years ago)

the Sunroof! record "Reborn Jets In Rainbow Water" or something like that is really good. The first side, is a long piece of beatufiul string drones with small tinkling bells, very peaceful sounding, while the other side more just guitar overdub/drone stuff but still quite good. I saw the show at free 103.9 too and was not impressed, as it was just Bower making distorted guitar loops with his pedals.

Daniel DiMAGGIO (Daniel DiMAGGIO), Friday, 20 August 2004 22:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah.. the Free103 show was kinda bleh. Vibracathedral were rad though.. show at Tonic w/ JOMF was better, but still not great.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Friday, 20 August 2004 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

I was at the 103.9 show as well. figured I couldn't miss the chance to see Bower since I spent so much time with his records in college, despite generally not listening to that kind of music anymore. It was good for what it was. I think it makes more sense in the context of all the Total records, Bower as master of the electric guitar. But no, it wasn't so inspired.

ya autobahn is best... also the one with hunmmingbird on it (bliss), chirpy pretty powerdrones, great.
new one 'panzer division lou reed' is only for when you, like, need a really strong cup of coffee.

Snop Snitchin, Sunday, 16 December 2007 09:32 (eighteen years ago)

<i>cloudz</i> is really good. i like that brief period where it sounded like he was listening to tons of harmonia/cluster/kraftwerk/neu or something. burbling squishy chirpy stuff.

youngsbower > sunroof!

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 16 December 2007 10:07 (eighteen years ago)

wish they'd reissue "sad frog wind"

moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 16 December 2007 10:11 (eighteen years ago)

youngsbower reminds me a lot of that thread where jw embedded like 8 of the same nintendo music clip slighly offset

youngsbower sounds like this but played through a flanger down a 500-yard metal pipe

hadn't heard of the youngsbower. can u leonardo ^_^

im liking USSA a lot, some of it reminds me me of fripp+eno "swastika girls". also "trampled dawns" from silver bear mist is gr8

sleep, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 17:50 (eighteen years ago)

i can do youngsbower later. it's seriously gra8te, definite cluster/harmonia vibe. cloudz and ussa are probably my favorites of sunroof

the other day i got the new birchville cat motel which has bower on it

am0n, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 18:18 (eighteen years ago)

There are two youngsbower recs, first one is pretty heavy - think they're playing their gtrs w/ metal bars and shit - and has never been issued on cd. the second one, 'relayer' (haha) is more dreamy and processy

Ward Fowler, Tuesday, 18 December 2007 18:58 (eighteen years ago)

youngsbower - relayer

am0n, Friday, 21 December 2007 05:42 (eighteen years ago)

the first one (site/realm) was released as "richard youngs and matthew bower" tho. that's totally different.

moonship journey to baja, Monday, 25 February 2008 21:47 (eighteen years ago)

i've heard of that. is it on vhf?

am0n, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 03:29 (eighteen years ago)

most of the reviews are negative. =(

moonship journey to baja, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 07:43 (eighteen years ago)

sunroof! is like a chemistry lab full of beakers of colored water. green, blue, red, orange, brown, purple, lavender, lapis, royal blue, white, and black. each feeling, each emotion, is seperated into its own color. close your heads ... in your mind there is a red light, scalined like on a monitor. blue in the corner of your midn. hazy striations on the horizon. rusted metal and smog. t his s t hte ialbu sunfroof.

youyr mind is scanlined. your emtoins are a lie about some illusion from a past that never existed. only in commercials on TV you remember. this is sunroof! the colors of lapis and roytal blue and lavender bright inside the inside the liquid of your eyes. you miss the past, but it enver existed. everything is like each day you swee those hazy lines of color in the sky. your are the color. each sound has its color, each feeling has its sound and you sre all of these thigns.

the late great, Tuesday, 24 July 2012 22:17 (thirteen years ago)

what the hell happened to them, anyway? double leopards: good. sunroof: good. 1/4 of double leopards + sunroof get together: sounds like a guy blowing through a straw amplified in goldwave until it clips.

have not kept up with this guy, but the vibracathedral orchestra reissue that just came out on VHF is great! comes with a dvd! i always have these two bands linked in my mind. dunno why. or, well, i do know why. bower played on the vibracathedral WFMU set which i haven't listened to in ages but recall liking a lot. surely online somewhere..

dan s is right way up thread that the youngsbower lp is kind of disappointing.

it's funny to see this in 2012, I was saying the same thing in 1995. almost everything skullflower did from 88-92 was incredible, then 20 years of frustrating meandering inconsistency.

birchville cat motel was 'good live', and i like a split alb he made w/ bruce russell. saw him play a sweet gig once w/ richard youngs in a tiny basement venue in glasgow. he also had a power metal outfit ala sunn)))). lots of his other recs seemed a bit identikit, but i guess that is true of these prolific noize dudes. def prefer him to jackie o motherfucker, who were by far the most useless of all the improv-psych-jam band outfits that i saw live (nnck were amazing twice, saw vibra play a very sweet early morning atp set w/ bower on electronics, and had a gd time at a sunburnt hand of the man show...wld still travel to see nnck, they seem to be able to MAKE THINGS HAPPEN)

will always love the 'metal' phase of hototogisu (i never seem to see the cd reissue of floating gardens...cheap either)
