Pitchfork blurb on Yellow Swans review today:

"Recently debuting with a CDR under the name D. Yellow Swans, this Portland-based outré-noise ensemble's debut for Narnack Records applies discipline, finally, to the noise-rock aesthetic."

Joshua Norton was born in England on February 4 1819. He engaged in a number of business enterprises in Africa, and emigrated to San Francisco in 1849. He immediately entered the real estate business and accumulated considerable wealth. When he tried to corner the rice market, he lost everything. In order to cheer him up, his friends started to call him "Emperor." On September 15 1859 he proclaimed himself Emperor of the United States. He donned a blue uniform with brass buttons, epaulets, and a military cap. Instead of sending him off to have his head examined, everyone humoured him because of his pleasant and cheerful disposition. He rode the streetcars free, attended theaters without charge, and was supplied with the necessities of life by those around him. When he ran short of cash, he simply drew drafts on his Imperial Treasury. He issued Royal Proclamations that were designed to better the human race. On Sunday he always attended a church. He played no favourites, but visited them all. Merchants and financiers consulted him on business matters and apparently he gave them sound advice on these matters. He decreed that a double span bridge be built between San Francisco and Oakland, which eventually ocurred. Some 30,000 people attended Emperor Norton's funeral procession in 1880 after his private Masonic funeral.

English newspapers on San Francisco

---- (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 20:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Why San Francisco?
Sparkling skyscrapers, dramatic rolling fog, cable cars and seagulls. There is no city like it in the United States. San Franciscans are eclectic, alternative and pioneering people - which is reflected in their unusual shops and world-famous restaurants.

---- (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 12 April 2005 20:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Urban villages such as Hayes Valley, Haight Street, Grant Avenue and North Beach are the essence of youth and style. You can stroll around these areas for hours and never get bored.

Amoeba Music

This converted Fifties bowling alley is now a huge music emporium filled wall to wall with vinyl, CDs, cassettes and posters. Aiming to cater for a wide (but essentially alternative) range of tastes, there are comprehensive collections of rock, indie, hip-hop, reggae, and electronica. Staff recommendations are excellent and the free, live events with artists such as Frank Black and DJ Jazzy Jeff give the place a buzz you don't get in Virgin Megastores.

Yessssssssssssssssss

Edgware General (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 17:03 (twenty years ago)

the EXTRA ACTION MARCHING BAND

hmmm, i wonder if that's anything like the brass dance band that's "the bomb" in portland right now amongst the arts and crafts affected denizens of this overcast city. i sense a sad trend.

Ellsworth M. Toohey (Grodd), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 17:05 (twenty years ago)

Brass bands are great!

Edgware General (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 17:06 (twenty years ago)

They are like rap music for people in pinstripe!

Edgware General (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 17:07 (twenty years ago)

meh, they're a buncha folx from French Fry Factory and Mills. Passable maybe once. Too much schtick.

I saw AiH a couple years ago and they were great! What did you think Tim?

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 17:08 (twenty years ago)

So good ...

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 17:09 (twenty years ago)

Too much schtick, I prefer to listen to Japanese bands who record in the ocean and live as part of ascetic cult and make music with glowing balls of light.

Edgware General (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 17:11 (twenty years ago)

;)

Edgware General (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 17:12 (twenty years ago)

I prefer bands that release at least 36 cd-rs a week.

Ellsworth M. Toohey (Grodd), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 17:13 (twenty years ago)

didn't t0m sm1th publically say brass bands were better than noize theese days?

http://www.caratulasdecine.com/Caratulas/Drumline.jpg

while the drama parts of that movie sucked... the drum performances were badass.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 17:15 (twenty years ago)

my friend wanted me to go see Extra Action this weekend in Oakland. i decided to go to a bar and get sloshy

The Amazing Jaxon! (jaxon), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 17:19 (twenty years ago)

Haha, mission accomplished.

I think your friend's GF Ann3 might be friends with EAMB.

gygax! (gygax!), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 17:23 (twenty years ago)

my friend (BF of Ann3) was the one who invited me to go see the show.

gah, i was so sloshy this weekend i forgot i spent it with you that night. did you like those paintings i found?

The Amazing Jaxon! (jaxon), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 18:19 (twenty years ago)

gygax, have you heard the brassband mix cd Jordan made for me? it's prolly the cd i listened to most last year.

The Amazing Jaxon! (jaxon), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 18:21 (twenty years ago)

yeah! and you gave it to ME! ADAM!

I now have my keyboard! Let's ROCK

Edgware General (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 18:33 (twenty years ago)

Love them or hate them, you'll never forget them. Having released an album on 5RC, a slew of 7"s on countless labels including GSL and Narnack, having opened on tours with buddies such as Sonic Youth, Peaches, Unwound, Mr. Quintron, Deerhoof, and Q and not U, xbxrx return this fall for their second full-length 'Sixth in Sixes' to be released on Polyvinyl. Mating post-hardcore guitar onslaughts with articulate experimentation and intense, cathartic vocals xbxrx create a relentlessly modern rock music that is as chilling as it is invigorating. Connections between xbxrx and Polyvinyl abound: including the band's relationship with Mates of State and Collections of Colonies of Bees as well as having played shows with Aloha. 'Sixth in Sixes' has been generating lots of excitement in the Polyvinyl office and we couldn't be more excited about working with xbxrx.

THE JAMES DEAN OF THE OLD TESTAMENT (ex machina), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 18:39 (twenty years ago)

xpost - should i come over sometime? during the week? weekend?

what if i totally forgot how to use it?

The Amazing Jaxon! (jaxon), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 18:40 (twenty years ago)

I can come over to you if you like! I just need to sort out the REASON

WHO KNOWS WHAT WILL HAPPEN?

Edgware General (nordicskilla), Tuesday, 28 June 2005 18:49 (twenty years ago)
