the space in front of my house was taken by a Isuzu Trooper so i had to park several blocks away, which is no big deal except for the fact that in the rain carry my backpack and my 12" split, I tripped over a trailer hitch and fell on the ground, scrapping my arm, fucking up the record and hurting my hip. i should also add that i set my right hand index finger on fire with a match at the show.

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 07:18 (twenty-one years ago)

YOU DID'NT SEE THE BAD MOON RISING?

ddb (ddb), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 11:58 (twenty-one years ago)

Jack Cole, when will you ever learn never to leave the house after dark?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 14:43 (twenty-one years ago)

ddb bwahahahahahaha!

adam. (nordicskilla), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 14:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Jack, how much are they selling the record for?

dean? (deangulberry), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

10 bucks and they have the new panda bear, too.

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

OH SNAP

Also $10, yes?

Damn, I wanted one of those tshirts too. $$$$$$$$$$$$

dean? (deangulberry), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 16:41 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, the cd is 10 too -- listening to it now, its very good -- perfect morning music, though thats kind of funny since its all about panda bear's dad dying.

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

i feel my misanthropy flaring up again.

whomever buys the campire is sucker -- catsup plate is doing another batch, i think, without the homemade covers.

pt barnum is the greatest philosopher ever.

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 16:45 (twenty-one years ago)

I have mixed feelings about the original cover.

dean? (deangulberry), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

how so, out of curiosity? for me, its kinda of just blah blah blah and the colors are unappealing in a hippy sort of way.

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 16:48 (twenty-one years ago)

The art is somewhat MEH but mostly I don't like having that white portion pasted on the cardboard.

I love the Here Comes the Indian art though.

dean? (deangulberry), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I want to make music only so that I can design the sleeves for them.

dean? (deangulberry), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 16:52 (twenty-one years ago)

just be like mingering mike and just make the sleaves and then leave them somewhere for someone to find and make you famous.

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 16:55 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes. It all comes back to Mingering Mike.

How is the record, Jack? Have you listened to it yet?

dean? (deangulberry), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 18:31 (twenty-one years ago)

is my copy of campfire songs rare then?

cºzen (Cozen), Thursday, 26 August 2004 01:52 (twenty-one years ago)

JACK I'M SORRY YOU SCRAPPED YOUR ARM.

Tim Ellison (Tim Ellison), Thursday, 26 August 2004 03:23 (twenty-one years ago)

if i was 80 i would have a week left to live, my hip shattered!

i like the panda bear cd -- melodic and repetetive -- folky pop elegy for his dead dad.

jack cole (jackcole), Thursday, 26 August 2004 03:38 (twenty-one years ago)

How's the 7"?

dean? (deangulberry), Thursday, 26 August 2004 03:40 (twenty-one years ago)

i broke the 12" in the fall. it gave up its life so i could live! can i ask for more for 10 bucks?

jack cole (jackcole), Thursday, 26 August 2004 03:41 (twenty-one years ago)

also, a friend recorded the show and promises to shake it down soon.

jack cole (jackcole), Thursday, 26 August 2004 03:42 (twenty-one years ago)

That sucks about the record. I'll be picking up extras at the show maybe. If you want one, lmk.

dean? (deangulberry), Thursday, 26 August 2004 03:43 (twenty-one years ago)

(assuming they have some by friday)

dean? (deangulberry), Thursday, 26 August 2004 03:44 (twenty-one years ago)

they had a ton so dont worry yr pretty little head. a friend of mine, Mr. Collector Scum, bought three and promised to sell me one. thanks for the offer though. much appreciated.

jack cole (jackcole), Thursday, 26 August 2004 03:46 (twenty-one years ago)

n/p

dean? (deangulberry), Thursday, 26 August 2004 03:54 (twenty-one years ago)

i can give you mine jack if you'd like.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 26 August 2004 07:00 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw the Animal Collective.

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 26 August 2004 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

...

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 26 August 2004 14:49 (twenty-one years ago)

after hours of thought and a lot of gut wrenching internal debate, I have decided I do not like the animals in that collective. also, why were there so many people in the will call line? why why why? why did I miss comets on fire again? someone tell me now

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 26 August 2004 15:55 (twenty-one years ago)

different strokes for different folx. i thought that animal collective built up a good momentum in their set. their 3rd to last song made my night. that was so cool.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 26 August 2004 15:56 (twenty-one years ago)

for me, the collective are the perfect mix of ingredients.

jack cole (jackcole), Thursday, 26 August 2004 15:59 (twenty-one years ago)

i had only seen them as a two piece before (avery tare and panda bear). the 4 person line-up is MUCH better.

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 26 August 2004 16:00 (twenty-one years ago)

So I've been listening to AC lately and I like them and everything, it's nice, but I'm also thinking that this is kinda Phish for people who hate Phish. Something about the combination of cuteness and twiddlyness (granted, they're production/sound geeks instead of virtuoso jam geeks, but that's what I mean about being for people who hate Phish). And even though people who hate Phish might like Animal Collective, I bet people who love Phish would like them too.

jack cole (jackcole), Thursday, 26 August 2004 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

i saw them maybe 2 years ago last time -- this time they were much more together playing live as a 4 piece.

jack cole (jackcole), Thursday, 26 August 2004 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Black Dice were good for an Elle Hot Boyz of Summer photo pullout type band.

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 26 August 2004 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Ac should loan BD their drum guy.

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 26 August 2004 16:14 (twenty-one years ago)

CUTE BAND ALERT!

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 26 August 2004 16:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I am in the next issue of Lucky. In silver hotpants and a plaid life preserver. Astride a unicorn with angel's breath.

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 26 August 2004 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I am worried about seeing Black Dice post-Hisham.

dean? (deangulberry), Thursday, 26 August 2004 16:16 (twenty-one years ago)

(dean, they sounded good -- i left after two songs though cuz i wasnt in the mood after animal collective -- the show would have been much better if black dice had opened for ac instead)

jack cole (jackcole), Thursday, 26 August 2004 16:18 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I could imagine how that'd be. I'm seeing them twice so I fully reserve the right to bail on Black Dice if they're stinking it up.

dean? (deangulberry), Thursday, 26 August 2004 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

black dice mk.2 didn't segue very well, i thought a lot of the newer "songs" went on way too long without anything interesting happening. they seemed to be making a lot of mistakes (they shamefully laughed when people started clapping for them). bjorn is a better guitarist than a "sound manipulator". the new miami-bass style percussion <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< hisham

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 26 August 2004 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

i didnt stay long enough to get a sense of that. they opened with two short pieces, percussive blurp with guitar.

jack cole (jackcole), Thursday, 26 August 2004 16:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Isn't really just a matter of time before Black Dice either brings Hisham back or gets a new drummer?

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 26 August 2004 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Seriously, I thought Black Dice were great. Really great.

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 26 August 2004 19:17 (twenty-one years ago)

But then I like booty bass.

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 26 August 2004 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 26 August 2004 20:01 (twenty-one years ago)

Lend me that and Slow Century.

adam. (nordicskilla), Thursday, 26 August 2004 20:06 (twenty-one years ago)

LA: Animal Collective were really really great and Black Dice were MEH, doing the Creature Comforts medley. BD had *SHOCKER* equipment troubles.

dean? (deangulberry), Saturday, 28 August 2004 07:59 (twenty-one years ago)

energetic bandmates >>>>>>> too much equipment ALWAYS

dean? (deangulberry), Saturday, 28 August 2004 07:59 (twenty-one years ago)

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 05:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay then ... does Avey Tare do vocals on Panda Bear's album?

why do old people and old users of ILX such bastardos (deangulberry), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 05:58 (twenty-one years ago)

nope panda bear does.

panda bear also has another solo album that preceded the first avey tare and panda bear cd and all the later animal collective stuff.

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 06:16 (twenty-one years ago)

I downloaded their set from Emo's and it doesn't have that new song that I really like on it .... ;.(

why do old people and old users of ILX such bastardos (deangulberry), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 06:30 (twenty-one years ago)

the first panda bear album is called "panda bear", it was released on soccer star records 5 years ago.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 13:17 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, his first one came out ages ago. last time i saw AC play, panda wore a panda bear hat with ears. boy could tear up some drummibles. those legs were free!

msp (msp), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 13:28 (twenty-one years ago)

i owe animal collective to msp, who is a gentleman, scholar and manatee hair stylist.

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 14:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I owe both of you several beers.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 14:57 (twenty-one years ago)

i owe you some pipeweed, ale and a wedge of cheese.

jack cole (jackcole), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 14:58 (twenty-one years ago)

party!
m.

ps where's a picture of that nerdz dude when you need one?

msp (msp), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

four years pass...

so i had a long conversation with lou's employee about animal collective. we both agreed that we'd never really "gotten" animal collective, felt bad about being left out of the rabid fanbase, would keep trying to "get it" until it made sense. like, i like beach boys and black dice so why don't i like this?

anyway this one sounds better than usual. maybe i will work backwards through "strawberry jam" and "feels" (i worked forward until "sung tongs" when i decided i wasn't getting it)

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 05:58 (seventeen years ago)

try person pitch first if u haven't heard it yet

dmr, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 06:51 (seventeen years ago)

that and the ep with vishnu bunion or whatever is good. weird that a cranky guy like jack cole was so into them

eman, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 14:21 (seventeen years ago)

sometimes animals bring out the best in people

s1ocki, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 14:47 (seventeen years ago)

well i have "person pitch" and i think it's really great.

i wonder if my whole problem with AC boils down to avey tare's awful try-hard indie singing. it reminds me of neutral milk hotel or something. so embarrassing to listen to.

moonship journey to baja, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 17:56 (seventeen years ago)

ya i can't stand that guy's voice

eman, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 18:07 (seventeen years ago)

boils down to avey tare's awful try-hard indie singing

you'll probably hate strawberry jam then, his singing is way up-front and kinda annoying (although I like some of the record now. really bugged me at first though.)

maybe give Feels a shot

dmr, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 18:23 (seventeen years ago)

errrgh i hate neutral milk hotel singing so much... could never understand how people could listen to that ish

s1ocki, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 18:35 (seventeen years ago)

^^^ ditto

I've not liked most AC that much, but the newest record is pretty nice.

Alex in SF, Wednesday, 21 January 2009 18:43 (seventeen years ago)

hmmm ... nice to see that the two reviews reynolds posts here exactly nail my feelings about AC

moonship journey to baja, Thursday, 22 January 2009 05:54 (seventeen years ago)

why are tix for animal collective shows in la being scalped for like 150 buxxx minimum

cool app (uh oh I'm having a fantasy), Thursday, 22 January 2009 17:41 (seventeen years ago)
