The S/H is so expensive ;_(

dean? (deangulberry), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 19:06 (twenty-one years ago)

They used to cost much more then the circuits would require, and (obviously) can be found cheaper in India, but don't seem so expensive now. I played in a (cough) microtonal drone improv band in college (we opened up for Gastr Del Sol!) called Sruti Box, which is another name for these types of devices. We used a Sruti Box, analog synths, guitar and viola, all very closely tuned.

The Sruti Box was just a few audio oscilators with an LFO.

Dan, do you know much about electronics / circuit bending?

dean? (deangulberry), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 19:18 (twenty-one years ago)

not really. I did some electronics stuff in high school, but that was it. There's a few people in NY who are into it, Rop from the Peachees uses some circuit bent stuff, and there's this guy Greg in SF who has a thing called Eats Tapes, that used to be bap-de-la-bap or something, and has some classic Roland stuff all circuit bent, a TR-707 with all these extra switchers.

Gavin(of Delia and Gavin) studied electronics and has a shop at Plantain/DFA studios, he did some crazy shit to the TR-808 that the Rapture used, extra knobs and stuff.

I'm really not that into it(I mean, I am in theory, like I think it's cool, but in the end are you gonna use that broken speak-n-spell in a good song or what?)

i did some of that in college but never found the rewards remotely appealing. (ie i was REALLY bad it.)

Yeah, it sounds like fun if you've got an extensive history in electronics, but it just seems really daunting to try and get into it without any experience.

New question: are any of you planning on going to India soon? If so, will you smuggle these boxes out for me? Thanks.

dean? (deangulberry), Wednesday, 25 August 2004 20:32 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, well i was taking classes in that crap at the time. it's just all so... annoying. the digital stuff is cool, but the analog crap just annoys me.

Circuit Bending Tragedy:
I bought a very cool Data-o-Tone (dumb 80s 2 AA-battery keyboard) from a garage sale and experimented with it then it broke and the keys wont play any more. :((((
