upon learning of L@uren P0dis's imminent departure from the greater NYC area, it occured to me to make use of my much-loved iTunes playlist feature to compile several CDs so she wouldn't have to travel around with much music. Using only one I had on my hard-drive, and selecting both obscure favorites and obvious favorites, I proceeded to compile and sequence 8 CDs with loosely defined "themes". I then burned them in haste, without time to print out proper sleeves, so have decided to post them here, hopefully archiving them forever. This way she can print them out, and if she loses them, print them out again, so long as the sturdy ILX server does it thing, and so long as the moderators of this fine board allow it to remain. So here they are, 8 of the greatest mix CDs of all time, let me know if you want a copy. btw, these are "compilations", not "mixes".

Art/DIY/Post-Punk - Near and dear to my heart, some of this I only have digitised because I had previously made a compilation for the Typical Girls mailing list. Jangly post-punk, angular post-punk, scrappy diy pop, mostly early 80s.

Disco kinda not Disco - a sorta electro-latin-disco-great gatsby vibe, very organic yet still lots of drum machines, a pretty eclectic mix that has some super cool and fun stuff on it. Disco, No Wave Funk, Euro-Disco, UK Jazz Funk, etc. An Ultramarine track that breaks out of my usual late 70s/early 80s mode, but fits as a very organic disco/techno track that samples the Eagles and Robert Wyatt.

1. Celestial Choir-Stand on the Word (Larry Levan mix)
2. Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band-Sunshower
3. Belle Epoque-Miss Broadway
4. Can-I Want More

12. Francine McGee-Feelin' Good
13. Ultramarine-Saratoga
14. Amanda Lear-Follow Me (Wally MacDonald Disco Mix)

Punk not Punk - again, not trying to be completist, just what I like, and what I have on the computer. For this one some thanks must go to Chuck Warner/Hyped2Death and Johan Kugelberg/Killed by Death, and Steve Gregory of the Pooh Sticks...This CD really totally KICKS ASS!

14. Gaz Nevada-I.C. Love Affair (Italian Version)

Folk Not Folk-Some new "revival" type stuff and the oldies, both better known uk type folk and us/nyc type folk. Why is Phil Ochs not on this or the AM mix? I don't have any mp3s. damn. I don't know the Currituck Co. or Vetiver song names because they were from demos, the latter not out yet and the former I think is the first song on the Vetiver CD.

21. Vetiver-????
22. Tim Hardin-If I Were a Carptenter
23. Richard Youngs-Soon It Will Be Fire

PowerWavePop - this had potential, but I now realize I didn't sequence it. Some of it was cast-offs from the punk mix and the art/post-punk mix. Some of it's very power-pop punk rock and some very electronic new wave pop and some just plain power pop. a great selection, ruined by bad(no) sequencing. SERIOUS apologies to Chuck Warner and Michael Train on this one, especially a few volumes of the Homework CD-rs.

so there it is. I hope you enjoy them Lauren. There's nothing in the world I like doing better then sequencing records, so this gave me great pleasure, not as much as knowing you of course...

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 00:24 (twenty-one years ago)

Ian c=====8 (orion), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 00:46 (twenty-one years ago)

dan selzer you are a treat. i'd like to hear the italo disco one sometime (didn't know the laura branigan, rip, song was a cover or whatever).

tokyo rosemary (rosemary), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 03:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I THINK AT THIS POINT, LP YOU ARE A OBLIGED TO MARRY DAN SELZER AND HAVE SEVERAL NOIZE BABIES OR AT LEAST OFFER HIM ONE OF YOUR KIDNEYS.

YOU HAVE TWO, DONT BE GREEDY.

ddb (ddb), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 11:39 (twenty-one years ago)

i think i almost did marry him at one point. then i decided that several years of heated email exchanges, fragile truces, and mutual recriminations would be preferrable to wedded n01z3 bliss.

dan, thank you again and again and again. you know.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 15:41 (twenty-one years ago)

beat me to the punch...was gonna say that yes, ddb, Lauren and I were once (practically) married for some time, but due to Irreconcilable Differences (the movie w/ Drew Barrymore), we had to break it off. Since then we've only grown more alike and she has now become the sister I've never had, except for the sister I do have. Those of you who have never had the unique pleasure of remaining relatively close to a serious ex are like, seriously missing out. I can tell this girl anything! But if you hang out too much you start acting like a couple of bitter married senior citizens, for real. But what would I do with 3 kidneys?

Self Control was originally recorded by a group called RAF, I think, but I prefer Laura's version. I don't have any teenline CDs, but have most of the Homework and Messthethics CDs.

Unfortunately, I don't like Jerry Orbach's singing very much, but I do like his dancing.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 16:47 (twenty-one years ago)

my dad keeps asking "is this the ramones?" about most of the songs on the punk cd.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:04 (twenty-one years ago)

well, one of them is named after a Ramones song, which is kinda close.

Blitzkrieg Bop was a UK punk band formed by John Hodgson, who went on to front Bascax, who were on Earcom 2 w/ Joy Division, and the Gynaecologists.

I wrote this about him 4 or 5 years ago:

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 23:18 (twenty-one years ago)

that is the only song i can't find on soulseek

brock (brock), Thursday, 16 September 2004 00:42 (twenty-one years ago)

is the version of "Underground Babylon" the one with good sound quality from the movie, or the one with horrible s.q. from the recent Catholic Discipline retrospective CD?

Daniel DiMAGGIO (Daniel DiMAGGIO), Thursday, 16 September 2004 00:50 (twenty-one years ago)

brock, which, UFO? I can put email that to you.

daniel, I'm not sure, I got it from some kid who put up a bunch of punk stuff on a website, I'll look for the link, I think it's from the movie, as I dl'ed it before the new CD came out, but I haven't heard the CD yet.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Thursday, 16 September 2004 09:14 (twenty-one years ago)

PATOOTIE LOBE

Free the Bee (ex machina), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 18:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Blitzkreig Bop is the band...U.F.O. is one of their few songs. Others are Let's Go (if you go, to San Francisco, you can wear some flowers in your hair, if you go to San Francisco, you will meet a lot of weirdos there. Now I know, so let's go!) and Life is Just a So So, which is on one of the Instant Pop Classics CDs. These are the only 3 I have and I can send them.

dan seriously, the punk cdr kicks dick in. really REALLY enjoying it. you are a wizard.

brock (brock), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 22:24 (twenty-one years ago)

dan, where my prefects cd at?

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 22 September 2004 23:17 (twenty-one years ago)

gygax, you want just the Blitzkreig Bop tracks? I have to find the CD I have w/ Life is Just a So-So on it.

Brock, you really found all of that? Actually, considering all the sources, nothing on their hasn't been comped or bootlegged so can't be really that rare...but who on earth has a copy of Einstein Experiance by the Plastic Idols? I've never even seen that. Got it on a tape Jonathan Marx from Lambchop sent me years ago. Their other single, I.U.D. is a well-known classic KBD type punker, this one is mostly not liked for being too "new wave".

And where could you get Escort Girls by the Prefects? There's one dude online selling a bootleg of the Prefects Peel Sessions, including the unreleased tracks, but he's about to lose that particular income.

Lauren, I have to see if I still have any promo copies. But I'm putting packages together including yr iPod thing and while I was at it, I made 2 more mixes to be posted shortly. Should I just give them to you when yr here? I don't even know if I'll be around. I don't want to send the stuff to cleveland while yr in NY or flying to London, are you going back home after NY?

I'm in the middle of a traumatic week off from work involving 3 dentist visits, 1 dr visit, 2 eye doctor visits, and one visit to Ikea that was worse then them all.
