this is the thread where we celebrate TETRIS RIPOFFS!

so... tetris! hard to tell if i even enjoy this game anymore after what feels like decades of playing it, first on the arcade, then about 25 million times on my gameboy (it was the game that came with the original GB, right?)

but i come here not to praise tetris, but rather to bury it beneath the hefty weight of its imitators! tetris's ripoffs have consistently entertained--i can't think of another game that spawned so many good imitations (ok i'm sure you can think of a lot).

we're talking: columns, dr. mario, super puzzle fighter (my favourite), klax, that new PSP one... the list goes on! here i invite you to name and celebrate your favourites!

I would really like Super Puzzle Fighter. Is there any reason I shouldn't get it on the Saturn?

Just get it on PS1 and play it on a PS2.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 16:54 (twenty years ago)

Oh no, I have a PS1, I just know a place that has the Saturn version cheap. Is the Playstation version a lot better then?

melton mowbray (adr), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 17:49 (twenty years ago)

I don't know, but I like the convenience of playing it on the ps2.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 18:04 (twenty years ago)

They're the same as far as I know. If you've got a Saturn, get the Saturn version.

(Note to self: dig Saturn out of basement.)

The Ghost of Black Elegance (Dan Perry), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 18:13 (twenty years ago)

Ah, Lumines is grand. Way more depth than Tetris.

ledge (ledge), Wednesday, 28 September 2005 19:59 (twenty years ago)

Don't forget Doctor Mario!

Pnickies, by Capcom
It's not quite tetris, the only similarity is arrange-tumbling-blocks-in-a-way-that-they-will-vanish. ok i suppose it's a lot like tetris.

Anyway the music is great

burning monkey puzzle lab, which is puyo puyo (which was dr. mario-inspired) meets hextris grids. the combos can be as sweet as the spf ones.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Monday, 3 October 2005 08:09 (twenty years ago)

things that make this good: hex grid makes things more interesting, but unlike hextris, not impossibly confusing (i can never figure the lines right) and also pieces fall straight down as opposed to along hex grid which was rilly maddening. smart computer a.i. also, spacing out of "debris" falling so that it doesn't come in huge chunks like puyo where you hammered yr. opponent but it really just oppened them up for massive combos like three turns later and they sent it all back. instead, it mixes itself up good inside all the rest of yr. stuff.

Sterling Clover (s_clover), Tuesday, 4 October 2005 09:04 (twenty years ago)

what do ppl. think of crack attack? that game is v. hard for me to get far in at all.

three years pass...

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/7813637.stm

Playing the computer puzzle game Tetris can help reduce the effects of traumatic stress, UK researchers say.

Volunteers were exposed to distressing images, with some given the game to play 30 minutes later, the PLoS One journal reported.

Players had fewer "flashbacks", perhaps because it helped disrupt the laying down of memories, said the scientists.

It is hoped the study could aid the development of new strategies for minimising the impact of trauma.

I'd like to point out to everyone how awesome, fun, silly, and weird Trash Panic on the PSN is. Almost completely overlooked, far as I can tell. It looks at first blush like a Tetris ripoff but it's much deeper and has a lot of action elements, and is totally goofy and great. Terrible menus and music but you can get past that for $8 or whatever it is

mario/tetris mashup that works surprisingly well - end of stage "bosses" are really challenging
