Wing Commander

Man, Wing Commander I & II were some games. I'm not sure that I ever finished either one on my own, but they seemed really deep and ahead of their time. The campaign/soap opera aspect was great too...I would kill for updated console versions.

They also had talking cats in jump suits.

The music during the run-to-the-hangar red-lights-flashing sequences was FUCKING AWESOME. I loved the first 3, never played the 4th. WC3 starred Mark Hamill. That's fucking awesome too.

I liked the fact that you could just fuck the mission and fly off into infinite space if you wanted, blow up your teammates, bomb your own capitol ship, etc.

I would get very annoyed if my wingperson took any of my kills (or any kills at all), thus screwing up my total on the little blackboard in the bar. So I'd kill them, leading to those fun funeral scenes and all their names crossed out. Fuckers.

Haha. Sometimes in Wing Commander II I would just fly around and see if my wingpeople would win the mission on their own.

I only played the first one, but man did I ever love it.

Wing Commander 2, along with ballblazer and zelda I, may be my favorite game ever.

I was on Origin's mailing list for a few years and had the mailer ad for Wing Commander on my wall for about 2-3 years before i actually got the game. LOVED it to death. Finally had something that looked like it could meet the promise of something like Star Wars Arcade. SO pissed that i needed an EGA monitor to play it. No good on my 8088 system with CGA graphics.

of course, X-Wing came out in 1993, so....

Getting drunk in the bar and then the controls being reversed during a Kalrathi attack, don't drink and fly, boys.

Heh heh... those funeral scenes were awesome. "I'll carry on for you, Iceman." SEEING AS HOW I SHOT YOU DEAD IN A LONELY CORNER OF SPACE AND ALL

I was looking for old SNES games in a store the other day and saw the SNES version of Wing Commander. Did anyone have this, and is it playable?

I had it and liked it a lot. The flight is a little crude (its no pilotwings or starfox) but it is fun. Look online to learn all the key combos.

that reminds me both how awesome and how hard/frustrating WC games can be

40oz of tears (Jordan), Thursday, 8 March 2012 16:56 (fourteen years ago)

Yeah, definitely in the category of games I played the shit out of without actually really getting good at. Definitely cheated to the ending a few times.
