Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Monday, 27 March 2006 09:27 (twenty years ago)

Wipeout isn't.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Monday, 27 March 2006 10:54 (twenty years ago)

B-b-but.. Coolboarders?

melton mowbray's APOCALYPTO! (adr), Monday, 27 March 2006 11:28 (twenty years ago)

Burnout 3 is dumb like a crack orgy.

Why does the birds always shitting on me? (noodle vague), Monday, 27 March 2006 12:09 (twenty years ago)

T/S: SSX vs SSX Tricky vs SSX3 vs SSX whatever!

You're trickin' GOOOOOD

kingfish ubermensch dishwasher sundae (kingfish 2.0), Monday, 27 March 2006 16:14 (twenty years ago)

People who play games like Driver and then obey normal traffic rules: c/d?

Abbott (Abbott), Monday, 27 March 2006 19:39 (twenty years ago)

Ha! Those people are hilarious. I know a guy who parallel parks in GTA.

antexit (antexit), Monday, 27 March 2006 20:38 (twenty years ago)

Um, Mario Kart?

Laura H. (laurah), Monday, 27 March 2006 21:35 (twenty years ago)

yeah, following driving rules in GTA(lights, speed limits, etc) is like the hardest thing ever.

kingfish ubermensch dishwasher sundae (kingfish 2.0), Monday, 27 March 2006 21:44 (twenty years ago)

you seem to have forgotten something: 1080 snowboardig on n64.

haitch (haitch), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 01:22 (twenty years ago)

also I quite enjoy certain aspects of car culture but cannot drive due to my near-sightedness, so the driving videogame experience is my outlet for that.

haitch (haitch), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 01:28 (twenty years ago)

I've always wondered whether the fact that I don't know how to drive in real life says anything about how I drive in video games.

Casuistry (Chris P), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 01:34 (twenty years ago)

i was conned into buying 1080 snowboarding. "but i hate driving and snowboarding games!!!' "No but this is great" OF COURSE IT FUCKING WASN'T it's just snowboarding. I DON'T GET IT

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 10:21 (twenty years ago)

driving games are fun when you play your flatmate and PWN him. same with maybe skateboarding. i didn't like SSX etc though.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 12:54 (twenty years ago)

I loved SSX. I also love real life snowboarding, although snowboarding games are nothing like real life snowboarding. I also like driving games. And real life driving. Where am I going with this? DRVNG AND SNWBRDNG GAMES ARE FUN U FULE, WOT IS YOR PROBLEM?!?!

ledge (ledge), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 13:31 (twenty years ago)

I would rate driving games over snowboarding games as they are more realistic. Also my reason for preferring wipeout over f-zero - 'cause its depiction of futuristic supersonic weapons-assisted hovercar racing is more realistic. Uh-huh. Oh yeah.

ledge (ledge), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 14:03 (twenty years ago)

i did ONCE have an enjoyable session on a racing game - it was a demolition derby thing with lots of self-intersecting tracks and was all about making spectacular crashes with details of hub caps flying off. i got bored slightly less quickly than usual.

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 14:06 (twenty years ago)

I reckon the best racing games aren't even about racing other people, they're about A) perfecting the handling of a car/board/kart/jetski/futuristic hovercraft to the point where going round a corner, at the maximum possible speed, on the best possible line, gives you a HUGE BUZZ. This is why my favourite racing games are Waverace64, Sega Rally 2, the rally parts of GT3, Project Gotham, and mariokart time trialling. (But not 1080, cos the courses aren't well defined enough for you to ever feel confident you're taking the racing line).

Or else they're about B) smacking into other cars and smashing shit up. Hello Burnout! (and to some extent, GTA).

JimD (JimD), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 14:25 (twenty years ago)

rock and roll racing on the SNES was awesome

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 15:46 (twenty years ago)

but yes Project Gotham! I spent months doing the KUDOS CHALLENGE trying to get this stupid car go perfectly through this narrow bend haha. and to get this car to accelerate to 102km/h up a hill.

ken c (ken c), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 15:48 (twenty years ago)

Also, the Wipeout games are great from just an art design perspective.

kingfish ubermensch dishwasher sundae (kingfish 2.0), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 16:21 (twenty years ago)

I love driving games but only if they aren't realistic.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 17:54 (twenty years ago)

I like surfing and skateboarding games (and hot shots golf!)

My favorite games are baseball games.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 18:37 (twenty years ago)

Wipeout XL had such a zeitgeist-defining soundtrack

latebloomer: band to the planet mars (latebloomer), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 21:50 (twenty years ago)

Wipeout 2097 was a much better name than Wipeout XL though. Wipeout XL sounds like something from Burger King.

JimD (JimD), Tuesday, 28 March 2006 23:48 (twenty years ago)

anyone remember the pc/amiga inianapolis 500 game, where most people would turn around and cause those massive plie-ups (and then watch the replay straight away)? I know u feel me on this one, ILG.

haitch (haitch), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 01:13 (twenty years ago)

i suspect alan is angry because he lacks skillz

sunny successor (katharine), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 01:28 (twenty years ago)

But that's all that these games offer, the mastery of skills for that game. Maybe modding of vehicles or something to give some loose narrative to the game, but you have to be good to enjoy these games.

Which, in the scope of stuff like Mario Kart, is BORWING.

c(''c) (Leee), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 01:32 (twenty years ago)

you have to be moderately good at any game to glean full enjoyment though, surely?

haitch (haitch), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 01:40 (twenty years ago)

(eg I don't play first-person shooters no more because they move too fast for me, and I avoid RPGs because they are A BUNCH OF STUPID BORING BULLSHIT I find the turn-based control frustrating.)

haitch (haitch), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 01:49 (twenty years ago)

there's skeelz in driving games????!!!oneoneone

Britain's Obtusest Shepherd (Alan), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 09:15 (twenty years ago)

Next up on ILG, Alan takes on Flight Simulators.

The terrorists have won folks.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 16:12 (twenty years ago)

Games like Mario Kart/F-Zero are even radder when one is plastered and playing with friends. Hooray drunk driving!

ALLAH FROG (Mingus Dew), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 18:41 (twenty years ago)

F-Zero and W1p30ut (as they spelled it) are the business, for certain. F-Zero for the SNES is one of those games like the first Mario Bros. game that I've played som many times I can sit down and flawlessly beat in a happy drunken afternoon. Totally idyllic.

Someone was trying to tell me Mario Kart for the SNES is the best one: is that so?

Abbott (Abbott), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 22:25 (twenty years ago)

I am quite impressed by the current DS version, I don't think I'd go back to the SNES one at this point.

haitch (haitch), Thursday, 30 March 2006 10:59 (twenty years ago)

Someone was trying to tell me Mario Kart for the SNES is the best one: is that so?

in my opinion, definitely.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Thursday, 30 March 2006 20:06 (twenty years ago)

back in the psone days, whenever someone i knew got a nintendo id say 'oh right. donkey kong. i was playing that in 1983' and i cant believe theyre still milking it. its pretty amazing.

sunny successor (katharine), Thursday, 30 March 2006 20:30 (twenty years ago)

i bought kelly slaters pro surfer from game exchange for $9.95 on sunday. I haven't played it yet. I can't imagine there would be much to do on a wave but im banking on it being as appealing as the other 'pro' games. i was going to get getaway: black monday instead but i didnt. it looks good and i think i could love it but im just not in a position to fully commit right now. has anyone played the kelly slater game?

sunny successor (katharine), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 13:36 (twenty years ago)

anyone remember the pc/amiga inianapolis 500 game, where most people would turn around and cause those massive plie-ups (and then watch the replay straight away)? I know u feel me on this one, ILG.

I did this a lot and it was an integral part in my whole video game life style, I even remember all the tunes I used to play whilst doing it. (mostly old Warp stuff, and lots of John Peel mix tapes)

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 13:59 (twenty years ago)

haha, yep. i got this game FREE with my first ever soundcard or something (8 bit soundblaster) and this is exactly how i played it too. huzzah!

teh_kit!!1 has 5 friends (g-kit), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 14:43 (twenty years ago)

my brother is BIG GEEK in this field btw. he plays some nascar game online and is srsly hardcore uber geek with it. he's part of a team in a league, races twice a week and has steering wheel, pedals, downloads his car setups, writes a newsletter for them and stuff. seriously.

-- polyphonic

I believed this was so until I actually replayed it after years of Double Dash (and later MKDS) and guess what--it's not quite as good as you remember. Compared to later games, the controls are sloppy, and the levels, while TOTALLY CLASSIC, really only hold up in terms of their nostalgia. Some of the Battle Mode stuff (esp. track 4) is still quality, though.

Laura H. (laurah), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 15:08 (twenty years ago)

I will say that I don't know if it's better than stuff for the N64 because I've never played any N64 games except for Mario 64, but I just don't think the Gamecube ones are fun. Maybe it's just a personal glitch or something, but I can't get into them.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 16:40 (twenty years ago)

Kat,

KSPS is nice. Not as diverse as THPS but it's a lot of fun. The videos are great.

Steve

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Tuesday, 4 April 2006 17:16 (twenty years ago)

Steve,

I grew up next to the pacific ocean and because of that had to sit through countless surf videos played by my brother and his friends then later by guys i was chasing. Movie length surf, and skate, videos are just like movie length porn videos. Lame storyline + bad acting + good surfers surfing/good skaters skating/good sexers sexxxing.
Now I can't watch any of the videos on the tony hawk series because all I can think is 'i could be watching porn right now'. I'm betting it'll be the same for KSPS's vids.
I like the pic on the back cover of him flying over a pier on his surfboard. It looks like fun. Are sharks involved?

K

ps i saw kelly slater at cairns airport once, which is such a small airport you have to walk out to your plane by following a yellow line painted on the tarmac and then climb up a stair car. his entourage was buzzing around him while he leaned against a column saying nothing and looking insanely depressed.

sunny successor (katharine), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 12:37 (twenty years ago)

With an attitude like this, how do you ever get around to playing any videogames?

JimD (JimD), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 12:44 (twenty years ago)

yeah, that struck me as odd.

teh_kit says 'dont fight u nubs just run in teh instance!' (g-kit), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 13:07 (twenty years ago)

personal involvement. duh.

sunny successor (katharine), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 13:24 (twenty years ago)

ROCK ON!

Dudes,
Steve "DCB" Shasta

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 18:02 (twenty years ago)

Nothing is more tedious than a skateboard video.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 18:10 (twenty years ago)

Dudes... "Blind Video Days"?

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 18:21 (twenty years ago)

Well I mean every once in awhile there's a decent skate video, but that's like 1% of them at best.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 18:26 (twenty years ago)

...

as opposed to all artforms???

SIGNAL TO NOISE DUDE!

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 19:53 (twenty years ago)

okay dude.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Wednesday, 5 April 2006 20:00 (twenty years ago)

two years pass...

I love driving games!

So this week I ordered, Dirt, Sega Rally 3, and Destruction Derby Arenas (for PS2)
Anyone know if DD is coming out on PS3 in any form ?

And I've also been warmly addicted to a really old PC game called 'Big Red Racing' where you race around the world in things like jcb's and silly vehicles. (features bonus voice commentary with assorted stereotypical humour of all races).

Ste, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 13:55 (seventeen years ago)

Has anyone made an actual snowboarding/skateboarding/whatever game that uses the Wii Fit board? They should!!

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 17:20 (seventeen years ago)

yeh theres Shaun White Snowboarding, Skate It, We Ski etc etc
i usually dont like driving games but am really enjoying Trackmania Nations at the moment - of course it being free via Steam has a lot to do with it

zappi, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 18:38 (seventeen years ago)

Do you think the wii fit board could do something like this?
http://www.primetimeamusements.com/pics1/top-skater.jpg

CaptainLorax, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 18:56 (seventeen years ago)

Still love SSX games.

kingfish, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 23:00 (seventeen years ago)

okay DD arena isn't as good as i expected, i preferred the original where you could make a game last for ages just driving around with your fucked car and one other computer car all banged up. this one seems a bit too arcadey and silly.

someone should remake the original DD1

Ste, Thursday, 7 August 2008 12:47 (seventeen years ago)

I'm hopeful about that Shaun White game - the early stuff looked good (not the wii version though).

Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 7 August 2008 16:34 (seventeen years ago)

TBH, "looks" are like the least of my interest with Wii games, especially ones that use the balance board.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 7 August 2008 16:58 (seventeen years ago)

That's wise

Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 7 August 2008 17:17 (seventeen years ago)
