A Boy and His Blob

One of those outliers in the NES catalog that manages to be completely unlike its peers without sucking (unlike, say, Taboo: The Sixth Sense). It's not challenging at all now but it was my favorite game as a kid.

Apparently they are rehashing this for the DS. I am excited, but it is weird seeing a screenshot of this familiar template wherein the boy actually looks like a boy and not the Ohio State Buckeye mascot.

Did anyone else ever get the blob to turn into a brick wall? WTF was that all about?

Abbott (Abbott), Wednesday, 29 March 2006 22:31 (twenty years ago)

I rented it as a kid, but I don't think I made it very far. All I remember is that the ketchup jellybeans being disgusting and useless, as far as I could tell.

Maybe you could stand on the brick wall in order to reach something else? Could you jump at all?

I am looking forward to this!

the beans should have been infinite. making them limited discourages experimentation and makes it possible to get stuck.

I haven't played it very much for the above reasons. It seemed like an extremely freeform game, which I liked.

älänbänänä (alanbanana), Thursday, 30 March 2006 15:02 (twenty years ago)

Yes, I remember having only the vaguest idea of what the actual goal of the game was. Fucking around with the beans was the fun part.

At the end you eventually fly to some marshmallow planet and fight a malignant marshmallow overlord in a dark factory. Freeform is right. Praise to the person who came up with the idea of a game where you run around in caverns for hours throwing jellybeans at random crap.

The ketchup jellybeans were useful if you lost the blob; if you threw one on the ground he would appear at that spot. The brick wall thing could only happen at the very start and there was no conceivable purpose to it. It just sat there. I guess it's in character that the game has a completely useless and nonsensical easter egg, though.

one year passes...

for release on November 11, 2005. Although the game is rumored to be completed, Majesco's financial troubles have delayed the game's release indefinitely. As of August 2007, it is apparently cancelled.

:( :( :(

That's sad...the release was one of the reasons I bought a DS. (Not that I'm in any way dissatisfied with my purchase.)

I had Freeway and Pitfall for Atari 2600, they both ruled. Ghostbusters was interesting but flawed, kind of makes sense that it's the same guy as ABAHB, now that I know. Night Trap is a...very bizarre thing for him to have worked on. I never would have guessed.

ugh, why does nu-ILX do that to links? you know what to do.

marmotwolof, Saturday, 11 August 2007 07:17 (eighteen years ago)

Aw :( you have no idea how cut up I am about this.

melton mowbray, Saturday, 11 August 2007 12:33 (eighteen years ago)

He used to have a personalized license plate that had Pitfall as the letters on it.

i love awkward wikipedia wordings.

three years pass...

I loved and was mystified by this game as a child. I DLed and played it for a while last month and found it almost equally mysterious.

anybody play the new one?

Jaw dropping, thong dropping monster (kingfish), Tuesday, 7 September 2010 22:33 (fifteen years ago)

I've played through about two-thirds of the new one. It's pretty good. Sometimes it's a little too easy (signs that tell you what to do) and the boss fights are kind of a drag, but overall I've found it charming and fun (but maybe not quite engaging enough for me to rush to get through that last third).

The bouncing marshmallows on the space planet – I think I have PTSD from those marshmallows. (Referring to the original game where the Boy had shitty brakes)

yeah, I basically had the same experience with the new one as jeff. it's fun and looks gorgeous but the controls are a bit loose and the whole thing gets a bit repetitive. I still want to go back and finish it sometime.

original bgm, Wednesday, 8 September 2010 13:56 (fifteen years ago)

I liked the new version a lot and was really keen on finishing it, but I just can't get past the third boss. I think my problem with this game is that most of the levels are do-able enough, but I find the bosses ridiculously hard, probably because I never felt like the regular levels prepared me in any way for the boss fights.

I'll happily finish the game if someone wants to do all the boss bits for me. I just don't have the patience.
