i just hope 70% of the game isnt learning the basics like it has been, well, for every other THPS game. I KNOW HOW TO KICKFLIP, HAWK.

Oh, and although a lot of the skaters are new, theyve still got my boy bobby burnquist. fuck THPS 3.

alright, this game is doing nothing for me. what happened?

Seems like it's reached the Madden zone where they just do a slapdash update every year or two.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 13 November 2006 17:10 (nineteen years ago)

yeah. it might be me too. as soon as i put it in i was 'x'ing through all the opening stuff. i cant even sit throught the cut scenes and people talking. its like 'just tell me what the fucking challenge is' x x x x x x x x xxxxxxx

what is your favorite TH series? Mine was probably 3 or 4. THUG was the beginning of the end for me.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Monday, 13 November 2006 18:32 (nineteen years ago)

definitely THPS4. i havent played much of 3 because i got all put out by bob burnquists exclusion. maybe i should get that.

i have fond memories of 1 and 2 but playing the 'classic' levels in the THUG games, where you can do the new tricks in the old THPS2 (i think?) school level and that beach level (venice?), made me realize how unplaybale those would be now.

I didnt mind the THUG with the hawaii level where you trick over the helicopter. that was pretty sweet.

sunny successor agrees: gay dad always trumps slutty mom (katharine), Monday, 13 November 2006 18:47 (nineteen years ago)

THPS2 was my favourite by far. Though, I must admit, I haven't played one since 3...

teh_kit (g-kit), Monday, 13 November 2006 19:17 (nineteen years ago)

I think the Hawaii level one was the first THUG, which is my favorite of the series. I don't have any real rational reason why though.

stoked for the madness (nickalicious), Monday, 13 November 2006 19:30 (nineteen years ago)

The Hawaii level was great all around, you could grind on buses and there was that big downhill aquaduct thing.

stoked for the madness (nickalicious), Monday, 13 November 2006 19:53 (nineteen years ago)

THPS4 was the last one I really enjoyed.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 02:44 (nineteen years ago)

freshman year in college was 70% drunk/high GoldenEye shootouts with my friends and 30% combos on the first tony hawk.

i don't own video games, so i haven't played much of the others. there's eight now???

gbx (skowly), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 02:47 (nineteen years ago)

THPS 3 and 4 definitely.

The storylines have been shit in all the THUG/AW games, probably never worse than THUG2 although the whole gimmick in THAW where you have to get a cool haricut is just stupid.

Introducing things like cars (and that fucking bull in THUG2) was probably the start of the downfall, but it certainly wasn't helped by the over-reliance on stupidly long combos to 'present a challenge' - the one in Canada where you have to collect jerseys in a grind then manual for an eternity springs to mind, but never worse than the final challenge which wikipedia describes thusly: "Because it is considered to a be a frustrating and tiresome goal no matter the difficulty setting, players only need to complete the goal once."

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 10:16 (nineteen years ago)

what was the final challenge? i cant remember

i dont remember the jersey thing being too bad but combos are what i find most fun with these games.

This is the game i've always been waiting for:

realism, f*ck combos

francisf (aaron ef.), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 14:55 (nineteen years ago)

The final challenge in the first THUG was to "Skate Eric's line". This was a stupidly large combo that started at the railway station and ended at the garage where the car challenge started, all in your 'home town'. You had to grind across the railway bridge, jump onto the garage roof grinding the edge, jump onto the telephone lines till you got to the bit at the bottom where you have the first 'score more points than Eric competition, transfer into the burnt out house, grind back up the pipe that ran down past the drug dealer's house, manual till you could jump and grind onto the fence of the park then follow it round till you got back to the garage.

Stupidly tiresome.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 15:22 (nineteen years ago)

My memory was not that bad. Gamefaqs sez:

TEAR UP ERIC'S BEST LINE
=======================================================================

This is quite a hard challenge, involving a lot of skill. First, note
that all you have to do is beat the line, not acutally beat eric. Ride and grind forward, and hit the first spot Jump to the middle of the bridge and grind the barrier to get the next spot. Next, transfer to the left and grind the next barrier. Avoid the fire and grind the next railing on the left. Jump across the road to the next barrier in the middle, and grind that. Get them, then head to the left and grind the vert ramps all the way along. Keep grinding along, then go along the road and grab the next spot. Avoid the fire by going to the left of it, then use the ramp to launch up onto the pole. Make sure you do not wallride. It will automatically take you along the lines. Grab the next spots up here, and be prepared to balance yourself out. Keep jumping and grinding so that you can get speed. Jump the gap in the bridge, and if you fall down here, go to the right, and use the vert ramps to grind the railing at the top, and also get the gap called Tombstone. Continue along the street and get the next spot. Follow eric as he transfers over. Grind the edge of the house, then grind the pipe and take it all the way along. Go up the vert ramp, head back down the street, and grab the spots. Collect the one on the burnt out house, then grind the edge to the right. Follow eric as he grinds on the fences, and then through the play equipment and onto the fence. Go up onto the powerlines, then drop down into the garbage area and collect the last few spots to complete the challenge.

Was it THUG or PS4 with the shopping cart challenge (a la Bam y CKY)?

stoked for the madness (nickalicious), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 15:44 (nineteen years ago)

Is this "Eric" character Eric Koston? Or some genEric?

teh_kit (g-kit), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 15:47 (nineteen years ago)

Shopping cart was on the prison island in PS4 if it's the one I'm thinking of - you had to skitch the guard's truck then got launched off a ramp?

It's a genEric - he starts off as your mate, then you fall out with him. He steals your video and claims he does the tricks himself, and becomes famous I think. Something like that, I was to busy skipping the storyline to notice.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 16:06 (nineteen years ago)

Damn stoner PS2 players!

teh_kit (g-kit), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 16:50 (nineteen years ago)

There's a ton of combo bullshit in THP8 that's almost as bad as Eric's Best Line, and it doesn't help that the "focus" button (the one that slows down time to help you land your tricks better) is mapped to the left thumbstick so if you click it in the middle of a grind or manual there's a 95% chance you'll lose a ton of balance and fuck yourself up.

Also the create-a-skater is garbage and a lot of the player models are really creepy; there's some hyperactive pedestrian with a devil soulpatch who occasionally pops up in cutscenes and I actually recoiled the first time I saw him.

nate p. (natepatrin), Tuesday, 14 November 2006 17:16 (nineteen years ago)

the shopping cart one was Bam's pro challenge in 4. you had to make it all the way down Alcatraz 3 times, getting harder each time. The only goal in that entire game that was as hard as that one was the other one where you had to go all the way down Alcatraz in one long manual. the first time i played through the game, both took a ridiculously long, irritating time to do. the second, about 2 years later, it took a couple tries before i could do them both multiple times in a row.

man, that Alcatraz level also had the one where you had to help the prisoner escape by starting at the very top and collecting items all the way down ... what a great level

lemin (lemin), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 03:44 (nineteen years ago)

Oh fuck I hated that Alcatraz manual challenge!!! It wasn't the balancing I had trouble with, I would always bump into stupid bullshit and break the manual. Alcatraz had my favorite bowl in PS4 though.

stoked for the madness (nickalicious), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 18:53 (nineteen years ago)

watertower?

i love that prisoner escape goal.

one month passes...
I gave in an finally bought THP8 over the holidays and nate is ridiculously OTM when he says:

There's a ton of combo bullshit in THP8 that's almost as bad as Eric's Best Line, and it doesn't help that the "focus" button (the one that slows down time to help you land your tricks better) is mapped to the left thumbstick so if you click it in the middle of a grind or manual there's a 95% chance you'll lose a ton of balance and fuck yourself up.

The focus mapping is utterly retarded. I still almost beat it in a couple of days, but I'm struggling to land the 15000 point 'nailed' trick in the Tony Hawk challenge that opens when you get to #9. There's only one precise spot off the ramp that gives you enough time to do enough variations, and finding it seems almost random.

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Monday, 8 January 2007 11:51 (nineteen years ago)

I basically put this game away after I beat it with the equivalent of a bronze medal. It told me to keep playing and best all my goals to make it to #1 and I'm all "does beating said goals involve chainsawing zombies 'cause if not, back on the shelf."

rock and roll for the rock and roll soul (nate_patrin), Monday, 8 January 2007 23:31 (nineteen years ago)

don't youhave to click both sticks to go into focus mode?
that's how i remember it being in the demo.

Christopher Costello (CGC), Tuesday, 9 January 2007 18:07 (nineteen years ago)

That's for nail-a-trick. If you have enough radical bitchin' skater mojo trikked-out super-boost you can click the left thumbstick and go into a similar slo-mo thing (and also fall off a railing probably).
