i started this thread months ago on ILE and it died quickly. Hopefully, it'll last a little longer here.

anyway, i was originally reminded of how much this pissed me off with the footage from Hellgate: London(done by the Diablo 2 guys):

Nothing but rendered cutscene, featuring the ass of chick cyberknight. this tells me NOTHING, except for, like, there's gunna be swords & demons & shit in it...

Gran Turismo 4 was like this.

OH MAN, look how amazing the graphics look! Then you play the game and it is exactly the same as GT3. I mean, does anyone ever actually watch those cutscene recaps after a GT race? I skip them immediately.

also, when did games start getting their own trailers? late 90's? Final Fantasy?

i mean, not just commercials; you know, cutting together game footage with the voice-over guy, doing that whole thing.

Cutscenes in commercials are fair, because obviously we want to see the best graphics in the game, but ideally they should make up no more than half of the clips, and should be balanced with footage of actual gameplay. Cutscenes ONLY is totally cheap, and usually pretty obvious. I'd probably be less inclined to buy a game if I saw that it pulled that kind of chicanery.

I think the Harry Potter games tend to be the worst for this kind of thing, cos in the tv ads you usually see in the run up to christmas, they don't even show cutscenes from the game, they have their own exclusive-to-the-advert CG sequences with "not actual game footage" in tiny small print in the bottom of the screen. Given that their primary audience is pre-teens, this is really fucking low.

you have to be a bit duh to fall for this though, surely?

Yes the HP game adverts make me laugh.

The old school equivalent surely is those adverts you used to get in (American) comics which would have a DRAWING of what the game was meant to be about, usually a mighty-thewed barbarian warrior fighting a snake, and then at the bottom you might get some incredibly small screenshot in which a pink blob and a green blob did battle on a blocky red background.

it's when feks come up to me and shout about how great the Terminator game looks on the adverts. Also sometimes I *want* to see how a new game is going to play.

CGI in games classic, surely? Robot, Square, Namco? It's just the use for advertising that sucks. IE the actual trailer for Hellgate is pretty good as long as you realise that it's nothing to do with the game.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Friday, 23 September 2005 10:57 (twenty years ago)

but that's what bugs me personally, i can't help but suspect that the advertisers are trying to pull the wool over our eyes.
