glitch

i was just playing mortal kombat on the gameboy (thru the super gameboy snes adaptor) and half way through the first round the screen went completely blank, then after about 30 seconds it starts playing this jaunty, ragtime quiz show shuffle, sounding sort of like the character select music on mario 2, but creepier. i know mortal kombat is known for having fucked up little glitches but this is just plain creepy, it feels like my snes has been possessed. any explanations?

post your encounters with creepy video game glitches.

i don't want to turn the snes off because i feel like i've exposed some ultra secret bit of programmer in-joke code that no one has ever discovered before, but it's creeping me the fuck out. it's probably just that the cart is fucked and it's playing the end credit music or something but as it's been like 13 years since i played this game i can't remember what it's like and don't want to rule out the secret code possibility. man i love 8-bit.

"Dhalsim's Invisibility - This is an interesting glitch as it kinda lead to a special move later on, his teleport in Hyper. I am rather positive that this only works on version 2, perhaps 1 as well. I have never gotten this glitch to work on mine. Everytime I try it resets the machine. And it shouldn't work on 4, even though I've never tested it to confirm it. Anyways, this is how it is done: Do a fireball and hit forward and fierce at the same time. The timing is kinda weird. If done properly Dhalsim will disappear from the screen. He can still move and do special moves. If Dhalsim gets hit he will come back. If you are hit with a special move while invisible, your projectiles become completely worthless as they will no longer harm the enemy."

rio do you have any way of capturing it and maybe putting it up on the ysi thread?

cozen (Cozen), Sunday, 25 September 2005 19:36 (twenty years ago)

ok so the other 2 classic glitches i know of are i. small fireball mario (you have to hit the axe that cuts the draw bridge at exactly the same time as getting hit by bowser, the next ? will be a flower but you remain small mario) and ii. secret metroid worlds, which aren't really secret worlds at all, it's just some glitch that allows you to jump up through the walls (open a door, then just as it closes jump into it, then keep alternating between jumping/turning into a ball and you can run riot through the level code).

rio natsume, Sunday, 25 September 2005 19:38 (twenty years ago)

xpost

yeah i'll record it into my mp3 player now and will YSI shortly, great idea!

rio natsume, Sunday, 25 September 2005 19:39 (twenty years ago)

it's on the ysi thread now.

i just realised that it's midi, and not the gameboy chip, so it must be something to do with the super gameboy. did the sg convert gameboy music into midi? as far as i know mortal kombat came out before the super gameboy..

rio natsume, Sunday, 25 September 2005 20:27 (twenty years ago)

here's an entire site dedicated to glitches.

Blimey! Definitely has to be something to do with the Super Gameboy, but perhaps not linked to Mortal Kombat if the screen went blank too. Perhaps it's a tune that plays in one of the art or palette editors in the Super Gameboy and it just got triggered by accident. I've got a Super Gameboy, and the SNES is set up at the moment, so I'll have a poke about.

v. creepy!

Question answered!

Boot up the Super Gameboy with any game in, and tap in using the snes shoulder buttons:

I remember a game called 'Rescue' on the Speccy. At the title screen if you pressed the Break key it looked like it had reset your computer but then it produced a strange alternative computer prompt screen, can't remember what system it was trying to emulate. but you couldn't type anything, it just went back to the game if you pressed another key.

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 29 September 2005 09:08 (twenty years ago)

Isn't that a boss button, so you could play it at work and get away with it? (Though I don't know how many people used a Spectrum at work, there must have been some).

melton mowbray (adr), Thursday, 29 September 2005 10:06 (twenty years ago)

Ahh yes of course it is. But yeah who the hell used a speccy at work?

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 29 September 2005 11:26 (twenty years ago)

hey look at this rio!

In the Moonraker level of GoldenEye, if you complete all the mission objectives but the last one, and then start throwing a buttload of remote mines onto the space shuttle (obv. you'll need infinite ammo/all weapons cheat, and invincible would be the help too), you can freeze the game. This is my proudest discovery.

Leeeeeeeee (Leee), Thursday, 29 September 2005 20:56 (twenty years ago)

in goldeneye on the bunker level if you place mines on the 8 monitors suspended from the roof in the main control room and then detonate them simultaneously, on the earlier version of the game, when you then try to throw the mines you can't and instead they just hover in space in front of you

it's pretty neat actually

once I was playing ISS Pro Evolution on the Super Nintendo with my cousin, and we'd been playing for a while so I guess the machine started to overheat or something.

Anyway the commentator bellowed "INJURY TIME!" in his bizarro arcade commentator accent, then immediately after he shouted "OFFJURY TIME!".

It sounded like he was calling an offside and that got mashed up with a second announcement of "INJURY TIME!", so it was a bit like "OFF-JURY TIME". Wtf though, it was so so funny.

Ronan (Ronan), Friday, 30 September 2005 09:11 (twenty years ago)

haha that's brilliant. old ps1 konami is great for this, we managed to get the team select tune playing during a game of iss 98 once.

cozen, do you read this?

rio natsume, Friday, 30 September 2005 11:19 (twenty years ago)

three years pass...

can anyone explain the "toasty" guy from mortal kombat?

a somnambulist in an ambulance (r1o natsume), Friday, 5 June 2009 13:07 (seventeen years ago)

was some member of the development team, it happened when someone had just uppercutted. I think if you did some sort of button combination when he did it on a certain stage you fought a secret character or something.

TOASTY!

languid samuel l. jackson (jim), Friday, 5 June 2009 13:21 (seventeen years ago)

Yeah, his name was Dan something. He'd pop up after a particularly good hit and sing in a hilarious voice, "TOASTY!" (it didn't need ot be an uppercut, iirc a good roundhouse would do it too). jim's right, he'd allow you to enter a code that left you fight Smoke in MKII, back before he was a robot palette swap. You know... when he was a ninja palette swap.
