Sundar- really good from the couple of tracks I gave a listen to. the contrast between glitches (made from skipping CDs as i recall) and the bittersweet keyboards is a winner.

right now I'm playing

evan parker- the snake decides.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 21 January 2004 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Winamp is giving me:

Trini Jacobs & Kevin Lyttle - Sexy Waist - Those who loved Turn Me On will also love this. Kev has got a woman in. She turns him on. He turns her on. She gets him rigid in his thighs. His voice is higher than hers, and when it gets really high it suddenly turns into the vocoder effect from 'Believe'. It is magic.
Various bits off Cassetteboy's Christmas album
The Singing Nun - Dominique - Why searching for foreign-language top 10 hits is a good thing, vol. 1
Severine - Un Banc, Un Arbre, Une Rue - Why searching for foreign-language top 10 hits is a good thing, vol. 2
Emma Bunton - Your Love On Me - Xylophones, bit similar to the theme to 'Love In The Afternoon' though I could be badly misremembering. Her album is gonna be the massive shock of the year...
Chris Isaak - Wicked Game - like this needs explanation
Stereolab - Margerine Rock - dunno their earlier stuff, so I'm not in a position to compare it, but this indie-disco-rocks my heart out
Various bits off the various (2) versions of the Scissor Sisters album

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 22 January 2004 06:07 (twenty-two years ago)

all i listened to today was the first disc of nuggets 2. the individual tracks are just beginning to stand out for me, except for 'my white bicycle,' which was the big hit of the first listen. when i discovered that track 16 was 'midnight to six man' by the pretty things, it was so right cos duane listens to them. i'd dedicate 'i see the rain' to the clientele. 'the first cut is the deepest' reminded me of tom's comment on how unusual it was that a ballad was the stand out track on this chart pop album.

oh, and i've been listening to Lansing-Dreiden "The Incomplete Triangle" which i'm kinda digging cuz on some songs they sound like Golden Earring and on others they sound like Alphaville. what's not to like?

now i'm listening to the album Pole. but not THAT Pole. The french group Besombes-Rizet from the 70's who made krautrock. i dunno what you call french krautrock.(there is probably a good joke to be made here about the Vichy government and Stereolab, but i'm too tired to think of one) Tapioca records. (they were great) plus, this Pole has a weird thing over the O.

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Listening to the newly reissued Hush by Extradition - they were an Australian psych-folk group from round about '70/71, sort of the Australian Pentangle, or the Incredible String Band without the wackiness. I'm really quite moved by it; it's just that inch away from being "Kumbaya" but it moves over to another area completely - some of it anticipates Eno's ambient stuff, some of it sounds like the Art Ensemble in the percussion workshop, some of it just breaks your heart. I got sent my copy from Adelaide, so I'm not sure if it's readily available anywhere outside of Australia, but the label is the rather inappropriately titled Vicious Sloth Collectables.

Contacts are:
website: www.vicioussloth.com.au
email: [email protected]

I would recommend you search it out because it's on a par with the Linda Perhacs album as per previously unknown early '70s folky weirdness.

jody (Jody Beth Rosen), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 22:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Just pouring out a tea, and listening to:

Abba: The Visitors

Otherwise, have been listening to:

Basil Kirchin: Quantum (quite something... I first encountered him through the appalling film "The Mutations" which I watched in the summer. Fantastic free jazz-found sound soundtrack to that film... a part of it is used here: an uncanny narrative of sounds)

Durutti Column: The Return of Durutti Column (special textures on the guitar)

Petula Clark: Sings Tony Hatch (so much... evocative pop; different moods and feelings aplenty)

Dr Buzzard's Original "Savannah" Band: self-titled (just received this yesterday, and had a cursory listen: exactly the sort of odd, beautiful compound of generic features that I love... disco and 30s jazz makes for the sublime)

Roy Wood: Mustard... Plus (a consistently inventive collection of songs... love it)

Wu-Tang Clan: Enter the Wu-Tang (like a bolt from the proverbial blue)

Dr Dre: 2001 (a very epochal statement... I feel, though not sure how to pinpoint this)

Malcolm McLaren: Duck Rock (tremendous *fun* all the way... like being with a group of entertaining friends)

Cody ChestnuTT: The Headphone Masterpiece (only listened to the first CD thus far, yet it's clearly not far from it's billing at least... I suspect the best pop out there, at least in album-as-statement form)

Viv Stanshall: Teddy Boys Don't Knit (not a perfect record, but maybe his happiest and warmest work... a lot of tender feeling is there, along with the masterly puns and *that* vocal style)

Luke Haines & the Auteurs: Das Capital (finally caught up with this; Haines is one of my musical heroes, for want of a better phrase. his music is wonderfully acerbic, with a suppressed tenderness; the orchestral arrangements work rather nicely. a very nice reimagining of his back catalogue; a shame he doesn't have a wider audience for these songs)

Max Miller: The Cheeky Chappie (assorted 1939-42 performances) & There'll Never Be Another (Max at the Met: 30.11.57 and Max in Brighton, 1961) (i've been interested to explore the style of Miller, which is a fascinating relic of past times... it's all a very skilled working of an audience... uninventive jokes largely, but the telling can be magnificent, and his rhythm builds during a performance. lol, those dreadful songs that all sound the same even grow on you! he indulges the latent sexuality in British people at that time; they lap it up with rather guilty laughter: grateful to be away from hard times and to laugh away insecurities. The 1957 and 1961 performances are slicker and more mechanical, it seems to me; the material barely different from 20 years previously... his voice seems to have lost its higher notes, but there is still some spark there)

The High Llamas: Beat, Maize and Corn (love it... very precise and palying to his strengths)

for the past 5 weeks some mentalist with really fucking inane taste in music has been calling my cell phone and leaving messages with song excerpts. if the music wasn't so horribly bad, it would be creepy:

1. One of These Nights (Bob Seeger, Eagles, who can remember? the creepiest)
2. One, Twice, Three Times a Lady (Lionel Ritchie)
3. Runnin Against the Wind (some bad 70s crap, can't remember Bob Seger again?)

a couple of others i forgot...lame-o.

Oh my God, Jordan, how is the new Dave Douglas? I freaked when I saw that Bill Frisell is on it.

Aphex Twin – Windowlicker (track 3 is wonderful)
Lee Scratch Perry – Dub Fire
Rush – Vapor Trails (this rocks - the layered guitars in "Earthshine", the [relatively] mellower singing style, that great locking rhythm section)
Evanescence – “Bring Me to Life”
Myself practicing Stephen Dodgson’s “Adagio”
Tool – Lateralus, tracks 1-6, 11 (It's better than I remembered and "Reflection" still amazes me but I still don't want to listen to it all.)
Luke Vibert - YosepH
Fred Frith Guitar Quartet – Ayaya Moses
Kid606 – Down With the Scene
Radiohead – Kid A (“How to Disappear Completely” is a masterpiece - the way the bassline feels offset from everything, the high drone that runs throughout the track, the totally dissonant strings that somehow sound totally natural. “Treefingers” too. I keep finding more in this album each time I listen to it – which says something because I listen to it all the time. It’s hard to believe that I totally dismissed it except for “Idioteque” the first time I heard it. I think I said something ridiculous about preferring Saint Etienne.)
Chris Potter – Travelling Mercies (gorgeousness)

Sundar, the Dave Douglas album is really, really good. It's a lot like The Infinite, i.e. sounding very relaxed and pretty but everyone is playing some hot shit at the same time. Frisell is cool, very transparent when he wants to be but having a big effect on the sound too (esp. on the slower songs). I'm going to see the quintet in a couple weeks.

I started a thread about in here.

Tons of songs on hi-speed dub cuz I'm condensing the best songs on 50 tapes to seven or so 90 minute ones. willem (willem), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 19:18 (twenty-two years ago)

this morning i listened to a left banke compilation. monday evening i had the greatest experience driving home in the rain listening to that galbraith recording of the bach lute suites. it was the first major rainfall of the season, so everyone was driving pretty carefully. it was raining hard enough for me to feel on edge, but relaxed and attentive, too. parts of the recording are really lovely. parts are fast and sort of cavalier, so the other parts are even more memorable - you've gotta be ready for them.

fresh offa record store shelf, for I eventually got curious why so many of my countrymen rather unanimously keep speaking goodness of this young hippety-hoppety feller from my hometown (um, four songs in, sounds fine...)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 22:58 (twenty-two years ago)

jel, do you have an Ataris album? I kind of liked "Boys of Summer". What's the rest like? (Also, do you have any Linkin Park? I was questioning whether it would be worth it to look into albums. I love "In the End" and like most of the other hits.)

Def Leppard – Pyromania (a ray of sunlight in the morning), side 1
Pandit Hari Prasad Chaurasia – Ragas Durgawati and Mishra Shivaranjani
Glenn Branca – Symphony No 6 (movement 2 is like the earth splitting open and vomiting fire)
V/A - Saint Germain En Laye Café Encore, disc 1

sundar subramanian (sundar), Wednesday, 4 February 2004 23:03 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been inspired alot by recent ILM threads:

My Bloody Valentine - Isn't Anything and Loveless
Nine Inch Nails - Broken

Plus:
Ministry - The Land of Rape and Honey
Jesus and Mary Chain - Psychocandy
Tool - Lateralus
Black Flag - Damaged

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 5 February 2004 03:13 (twenty-two years ago)

hey Sundar, yeah, I have the Atari's latest album "So Long Astoria", it's pretty good, it's mostly in the same vein as BoS, if a bit more rocky. The last Linkin' Park album was a bit poor, the first is good though, the stand out tracks are the 5 or 6 singles they released. If you can find it going cheap, it's worth getting!

Today I listened to:

Niza - Canciones de Temporada
Poison - Power to the People
Philistines Jr - Analog vs Digital
Neutral Milk Hotel - In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
Ramones - Road to Ruin

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Friday, 6 February 2004 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

started off by listening to a few tracks from smashing pumpkins and vincent gallo 'music for films' (excellent so far!) but then spent the rest of the afternoon with skullflower (saw sunroof yesterday).

'obsidian shaking codex' 'infinityland' are crushing 'metal-industrial-drone' albs, 'last shot at heaven' almost as good 'transformer' is ok.

Skipped through a bunch of my jazz CDs to pick tracks for a jazz-comp tape I was making for the car.
Haven't listened to the finished compilation yet, but I think it'll be a good one, though my collection is rather pathetic, what with all the standard 60s focus and all.

WKDU: "world music" (says the DJ), reggae, hiphop, R&B. It's tempting me to post something again about why a person might dislike hiphop for musical reasons, why I do, but I probably won't.

I caught the very end of an NPR special on Mongo Santamaria which I wish I had heard in full.

Various, Modern Turkish Folk Music vol.3
Weird, this cd, that my friend purchased last year in Turkey, "positively" looks like a 'Russian pirate platter' or sumptin'... But some of the actual music sounds rather good.

Raivo Tafenau Band feat. Neda, The Snow Queen (2004)
To most of what's on the record I listened to live a couple of hours ago at a small venue that's a mere few hundred metres from my home, across the river. (The distance'd've been even much shorter if I'd marched across the freshly iced-over water but, heh, I didn't dare to, it's been cold only for a few last days, d'oh!)
Neda is a rather ferocious vocalist/flautist from Vilnius, Lithuania; the backing band - a jazz combo that's not averse to working the occasional folkish theme and muscled acoustic funkathons into their sets - is Estonian-Lithuanian-Finnish. The concert itself was v.good.
...Haha, I think I'll check the ice again tomorrow!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 12 February 2004 02:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I've been listening to a lot of old promos I've gotten to take from the radio station when we did a clean out. This '93 New Model Army album is pretty good, David Stewart's Greetings From The Gutter should appeal to folks who want more '80s Bowie, and the Holy Barbarians' Cream reaffirms my sneaking suspicion that Ian Astbury is fucking absurd. I've got a ton more to listen too, and it's great to have so many albums I've never heard and didn't pay a dime for (aside from my years of helping out at the station I guess).

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Thursday, 12 February 2004 03:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Sorry, Ned, there's just something very bland about it.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Thursday, 12 February 2004 03:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I haven't heard it yet but I lurve them other albums so much. I have hopes that five years away didn't kill a spark.

Anthony, you have very successfully cleaned out the 'rock from the nineties that tried to pretend nothing changed due to Nirvana' pile there.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 12 February 2004 03:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I'm sorry, Ned. I don't think I'm much of a fan anyway, so maybe you should discount my opinion without much worry.

I also listened to Evergreen Club Gamelan Ensemble's North of Java. (It's just one of those contemporary Canadian composition days that everyone has once in a while). And Oneida's Each One Teach One. And some Steely Dan.

Mmm, me, I've been patiently working my way thru a dozen-(not-so)-strong batch of mid-to-late-90s jazz cd's that my son got dirt cheap on his journey to Germany and ("surprise-surprise") decided to give to me eventually,
ppl like Carola Grey, Bill Saxton, Bill Evans (sx), Leni Stern, Jane Getter, Jeff Richman, Michael Davis, Christoph Stiefel (who's alb. Ancient Longings seems the most interesting of the lot), and Contempo Trio.

willem (willem), Monday, 23 February 2004 20:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Mix cds from Jeanne - and I think I love her.

luna (luna.c), Monday, 23 February 2004 20:45 (twenty-two years ago)

Nellie McKay, and the fact that there aren't a billion threads about her on ILM makes me decide I'm many degrees of separation away from that tribe.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 23 February 2004 20:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Duh.

luna (luna.c), Monday, 23 February 2004 20:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't even mean "because there should be a billion threads about how she rocks," though! I just mean, dude, the sticker says something about how she's half Eminem and half Doris Day, how do you not buy that? IT'S RIGHT THERE ON THE STICKER IN BLACK AND YELLOW.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 23 February 2004 20:52 (twenty-two years ago)

I knew.

luna (luna.c), Monday, 23 February 2004 20:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Mew - "Comforting Sounds"
Metric - "Hustle Rose"
Genesis - "Down And Out"
Yes - "Sound Chaser" (I love the "cha cha cha" part!)
Wings - "Band On The Run"

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 23 February 2004 21:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Tep, I'm always a little concerned about your ILX generalizations. Tastes range pretty wide on ILM. Why don't *you* start a thread about her. You might be surprised by the response.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 23 February 2004 21:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, I wasn't serious! Not about there being "a tribe," I mean. I was surprised there didn't seem to be any threads, because she seems like an artist who's equally easy to love or hate.

Tep (ktepi), Monday, 23 February 2004 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I'll download a track and then I'll have my tribe get in touch with your tribe and we'll do lunch.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 23 February 2004 21:10 (twenty-two years ago)

With sexy results!

luna (luna.c), Monday, 23 February 2004 21:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm sorry, I've been waiting all day to use that.

luna (luna.c), Monday, 23 February 2004 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

It's understandable. I've been sitting on a real doozy myself, although it requires a pretty complex setup.

Spencer Chow (spencermfi), Monday, 23 February 2004 21:27 (twenty-two years ago)

If I can help, I'm here for you.

luna (luna.c), Monday, 23 February 2004 21:29 (twenty-two years ago)

Well I haven't laughed yet. Then again, I haven't yet listened to the record either. It's Morbid Angel's Altars Of Madness

I always have trouble remembering what CD's I took to work, and usually have to run downstairs and grad my bag, so that I can tell you all what I did listen to today, anyway:

Dinosaur Jr - Without A Sound
Of Montreal - The Bedside Drama a Petite Tragedy

Just went and got my bag:
The Fiery Furnaces - Gallowsbird's Bark (still don't like it much, but finally heard it all)
Elfpower - A Dream In Sound
Mum - Finally We Are No One
Juniper Moon - El Resto Di Mi Vida

Now:

Nichole Graham (Nichole Graham), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 21:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Donnas - Spend The Night, which was just as great as I remembered.

Sonic Youth - Murray Street, which was much better than I remembered. I still don't care for Kim's songs (frankly the best parts of all songs are when the singers shut up, not surprising), but "The Empty Page" and "Rain On Tin" get quite gorgeous. And I already liked "Karen Revisited."

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Wednesday, 25 February 2004 22:26 (twenty-two years ago)

"Spend The Night" seemed totally absent from any end of year lists, bizarrely.

Ice Cube - Death Certificate
Weezer - The Green Album
2Many DJs - As Heard On Radio Soulwax Vol IV
Currently my own 2step/grime compilation from about a year ago. Just had Ed Case's "Who?".

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 26 February 2004 09:27 (twenty-two years ago)

read a piece/interview on/with them in wire240, i like their attitude towards travelling/live music/recording. off to soulseek, then. do you have an album in particular you'd recommend to a novice, julio? (the piece makes me think i should try out 'torch of the mystics')

willem (willem), Thursday, 26 February 2004 10:16 (twenty-two years ago)

willem- go for 'torch of mystics', that's good for starters. But they do so many other things with music, I have just d/l 'valentines from matahari' so I'll give that a listen when i get home, I liked '330,003 crossdressers from the big veda' (that's the one hwre they play, at one stage or another, close to 40 'ethnic' instruments, one of the great acts of fakery) and 'live from planet boomerang' is great: alan bishop (or is it rick) on guitar reminds a bit of D.Boon from minuteman but they are quite different.

before I went to work:

ray russell: live at the ICA (my first purchase from forced exposure).

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 26 February 2004 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

toby (tsg20), Friday, 27 February 2004 09:01 (twenty-two years ago)

forgot we had to have a new boiler installed so had to stay at home, so been listening for most of the day:

wiley CDR- this has 18, mostly instrumental cuts, that I d'l from slsk yesterday.

sun city girls- valentines for matahari: the first track is great thrashy fun, most of the rest lighter, more tuneful (and with even, dare i say, a beefheart-ish bent). The last track has some of the most psychotic babbling I've heard (a good thing!).

sun city girls sublime frequencies- radio java, an hour's worth of tuning the dial and picking up whatever its on javanese stations. a bit more complicated than that, its wonderfully edited, lots of cutting done per track. top marks (the sublime CD i listed prev was actually called 'night recordings from bali').

ray russell- live at the ICA

'blackout' riddim CDR- 14 cuts, very strong comp off slsk. thanks to tico for recommendation on the dancehall thread.

Michael B, Friday, 27 February 2004 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Went tonight to the first two gigs of this year's Improvizz fest in my hometown.
The duo of Olesja Rostovskaja (Russia) on theremin & Tanel Joamets on piano played a shortish but otherwise pretty good set, I just wished that the theremin lady has shown much more initiative, rather than follow and react.
The combination of Etienne Rolin (flute, clarinet, sax) with Ensemble ProImPro (two voices, piano) was a more chequered affair. Which occasionally wasn't a bad thing.

Dick Slessig Trio - Live at the Yerb
(fantastic guitar/bass/drums trio, playing 70's country & rock tunes, repeating each single bar 16 to 64 times before moving on to the next bar. no soloing, just lots of flow & attention to dynamics. each song lasts 20-40 minutes. members of acetone/radar brothers).

That sounds fascinating!

I've been on a self-enforced diet of klezmer, + the new Dave Douglas album for the last couple days.

Jordan, I really can't get into that new Dave Douglas, the 'tunes' seem kind of meh and muted, and I keep waiting for Frisell or Potter to let rip and they never really do. I think maybe the rec I imagined it might be, and the memory of seeing Zorn's Electric Masada working in the same kind of area with lots more oomph and excitement, didn't properly prepare me for the politeness of this disc.

Went to the LMC gig at the Deluxe Gallery in beautiful Hoxton tonight.
Konk Pack - unsubtle yet entertaining blowout improv noise from Tim Hodgkinson, Thomas Lehn and Roger Turner.
Keith Rowe - amazing, emotional prepared guitar piece, dedicated to Roger Sutherland from Morphogenesis who apparently died a couple of weeks ago.
Toshihiro Koike & Mayumi Fukuzaki - ultra minimal trombone and Butoh dance, which was kind of boring but in a hypnotic and meditative way, therefore : classic.

New records I dipped into today, will play properly tomorrow :

Ghost - Hypnotic Underworld
Bohren Und Der Club Of Gore - Gore Motel
Dirty Fan Male - true life letters to the Sunday Sport (on Trunk Records)
Pelt - Ayahuasca
Fred Frith - Step Across The Border

udu wudu (udu wudu), Saturday, 28 February 2004 02:43 (twenty-two years ago)

Roger Sutherland from Morphogenesis who apparently died a couple of weeks ago.

Very sad news.
Years ago I translated an article of his, on sound sculptures, and he very kindly sent me for awhile a batch of photos of which he didn't even have any other copies at the time. We exchanged a couple of letters, but I never met him in person, though.

Btw the best things they played were a brand new tune, which is fire, and a straight uptempo blues where they could really let go.

What does Alice Coltrane's records sound like? Are they any count?

I'm not sure what that second question means. I only have one Journey in Satchidananda, which I just took off the shelf so I could write out the full title just for you. It sounds very late 60's/early 70's, in a well done sort of way. There's a mixture of Indian and western instruments (as well as oud on one or two tracks). Pharoah Sanders is on it and his playing is a lot more restrained than what one usually associates with him. I like most of his passages here a lot. Everything is pretty much a slow groove.

More festive Improvizz'04 goodness, in two parts for two hours.

Iproloo: four male vocalists (all with day-to-day jobs in choral music), of whom only one I'd previously heard in an improvised music context, turned in an unexpectedly lively performance, which among other things featured a water-bottle-fuelled & verging-on-choking gurgling solo from one of the tenors. The chap!

Then the trio of Jacques Di Donato - Mart Soo - Taavi Kerikmäe (=percussion, clarinet, wotnot + guitar + piano, electronics) abstracted, concrete'd, rocked & free-jazzed any which way they damn pleased.
Tomorrow's the last night of the festival.

t''t I am always jealous of anyone getting more improv action than me ;)

so today mark s was kind enough to allow me into his slsk files and got the grime. Burned a couple of discs.

ruff sqwad CDR is the 1xtra session plus 8 other tracks: I absolutely adored the 'rough' keyboards, the tabla sample killed me, the delivery was something I enjoyed even though I couldn't make out much.

sun city girls- dante's disneyland inferno CD2 from slsk: this is a very diff SGC alb, its charles gocher (their drummer) telling stories, poems over some pretty straight sounding backing. don't know how good it is, wasn't really listening very attentively, but liked what I heard.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Saturday, 28 February 2004 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Re: Alice Coltrane - apart from her first 4 or 5 solo albs, all of which are great in the way that Rockist Scientist describes (Sanders only plays soprano on 'Journey', which helps account for the becalmed nature of his playing), I also like v. much her appearances on 'Extensions' by McCoy Tyner (playing harp alongside Wayne Shorter, Gary Bartz, Ron Carter and Elvin Jones) and 'The Elements' by Joe Henderson, already mentioned by Toby (have you heard 'Multiple' by Henderson from around the same period, Toby - no Alice, but you get Dave Holland, Jack DeJohnette, James Blood Ulmer making a v. super-swampy post-Bitches Brew stew - tasty alb)

Apparently traditional Yes fans hate hate hate it, but I think you'd probably get something out of it!

i've just been reviewing a bunch of stuff sent for my website. There were some pretty good stuff.. Graham Coxon's single, which is ace. and the new Divine Comedy album. But I've just had to sit through the album by another band out of the Good Charlotte/Blink 182 mould.
Now listening to Ryan Adams.. dunno what to say for his record.

jellybean (jellybean), Sunday, 29 February 2004 17:40 (twenty-two years ago)

the new deerhoof now, 'milk man'. if quickspace are a mattress pumelled into the shape of a kid and held tight by string then this is similar but without the string.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Sunday, 29 February 2004 17:53 (twenty-two years ago)

that's not fair. Come Feel Me Tremble is pretty decent.

I've been playing lots of stuff but I think A.R.E. Weapons' "Don't Be Scared" and "Right There's The Spot" by Basement Jaxx (officially the only song on Kish Kash I like in its entirety) deserve public shout-outs.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 29 February 2004 18:01 (twenty-two years ago)

True enough, I suppose: I gave Come Feel Me Tremble a pass because his previous solo albums have progressively gotten so dull I just wanted to cry.

Sean Carruthers (SeanC), Sunday, 29 February 2004 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

the one I was listening to was actually Rock N Roll. and it was so awful that I actually fell asleep while I was listening to it. Anyway back to the Graham Coxon single on repeat now (which is pretty difficult cos it's on vinyl and it involves getting up every 3 minutes to get the record to start again)

jellybean (jellybean), Sunday, 29 February 2004 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

skipping it was a valid, valid act, Sean. I wouldn't have heard a note on the new one if not for a promo that came to my radio station. It's not astounding but way more enjoyable and light than shit like Suicane Gratification.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 29 February 2004 18:22 (twenty-two years ago)

What do you think of that wechsel garland CD Cozen? I thought it was way too minimal.

Michael Daddino (epicharmus), Sunday, 29 February 2004 20:21 (twenty-two years ago)

The final (third) night of Improvizz'04 fest turned out the most varied yet.
The eight strong group performed in different combinations for 2 x 45 minutes - one of the many (dada-esque) highlights being the tireless Frenchman who suddenly grabbed, from heck-knows-where, a little book of fairy tales - in Estonian, yes - and commenced reading excerpts from it despite his fairly non-existent grasp of the phonetics of the language. Hilarious.
I sat in the last row, ears agape and eyes glued to the text on my knee - the damn translation the deadline of which is threatening to leave me sleepless for a few more night, evidently! But dragging the work along really proved the right thing to do. I got a large chunk of it translated, plus heard great music galore. Win-win!!

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Monday, 1 March 2004 00:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Well if that guilty pleasure thread wasn't locked on ILM I'd note that "Georgia Dome" by the Ying Yang Twins would be the g.p. I've played most recently. Arguably, it shouldn't be a guilty pleasure cuz I'm totally fine with Bratmobile demanding that boys should lick their clit if their gonna lie and say dumb shit, but I guess my enthusiasm for playing this track (which in part is cuz I don't have a copy of its prequel "Get Low") makes me a little self-conscious.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 1 March 2004 00:42 (twenty-two years ago)
