i triumphantly snared it at a stamp shop a couple of years ago knowing it contained the sublime whooshy 'what do i have to do' (memories of my sister's cassingle c.1990 had been haunting me) but unaware of the rest of its contents.... ok yeah better the devil you know is one of her great singles and step back in time and shocked are both amazing but it's the non singles material i'm talking about here, those 4 killer hits are packed in some very high quality little kylie shaped styrofoam!
there's 'secrets' which is this floppy bus stop number that starts off as though nobody ws quite ready, 'things can only get better' is intense - i love the urgent guitar solo - although it's probably the one song that's most like something ppl call 'dated' in that it sounds a bit like a cheap late night ad for a computer skills course... then my favourite favourite 'one boy girl' - i love this so much, especially the magic breakdown right after when kylie swaps girlish yet firm raps with a weary man hater! i don't know how well it would work outside the album, but coming right after 'shocked' it's the best thing ever. um, there's more..... some of them seemed throwaway at first but after 2 years they are all my beloved children... except maybe 'count the days', i can't remember how that goes. the whole thing has that slightly flat dissonant quality inherent in kylie's voice which seems to lazily stumble over more frequencies than it should and so is completely addictive because of its refusal to resolve . also inside the cover there are the best kylie pix i know, she has heavy eyebrows and a youthfully rounded face and wears cool outfits.

Great post, I'm sold, next time I'm in the R&TE basement I will have a rummage and see if I can find it.

Tico Tico (Tico Tico), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 15:17 (twenty-two years ago)

So she's only about 40 on the cover?

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 15:18 (twenty-two years ago)

kilos?

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 15:19 (twenty-two years ago)

either

Silly Sailor (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 15:20 (twenty-two years ago)

when i say 'youthfully rounded' keep in mind the qualifier that we are still talking about kylie, who never had the cute cheeks that dannii so self hatingly threw away

(xposts)

jeremy jordan (cruisy), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 15:26 (twenty-two years ago)

yay tom you won't regret

jeremy jordan (cruisy), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 15:34 (twenty-two years ago)

i'd like to hear it too - her singles around this time were pretty good

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 15:54 (twenty-two years ago)

The first Kylie album I ever bought, "What Do I Have To Do?" was the first thing she'd done that really sold me on her.

"Step Back In Time" is pretty crap though, SAW at their cheesiest when the rest of the album had Kylie moving forwards.

LondonLee (LondonLee), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 16:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Sounds interesting but why is Candace Bergan on the cover?

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 16:57 (twenty-two years ago)

oh all you good lookin' folks need to stop picking on poor Kylie.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 17:02 (twenty-two years ago)

i think Step Back In Time is one SAW's best productions for her - i like the 'i wanna funk, i wanna F F U F U NK' bit or whatever it is and the whole celebratory disco vibe is otm

stevem (blueski), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 17:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, Candy Bergan is good looking. And, according to Art Garfunkel, an absolute dream to work with.

Mark (MarkR), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 17:12 (twenty-two years ago)

"Step Back In Time" just sounded too much like the earlier "The Locomotion"-era Kylie to me. It's the sort of tune she'd have done on 'Seaside Special' if it was still on the air.

LondonLee (LondonLee), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 17:18 (twenty-two years ago)

It was also around this time that Kylie actually started to become quite fanciable.

LondonLee (LondonLee), Tuesday, 27 January 2004 17:19 (twenty-two years ago)

yeah it ws her slightly more sophisticated sound and maybe this ws about the time she started sexing michael hutchence?

jeremy jordan (cruisy), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 02:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Did one ever per se 'sex' Michael Hutchence?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 02:10 (twenty-two years ago)

anyway i won't take too many pains to defend 'step back in time' - it's my least favourite of the singles - except that it doesnt remind me of earlier kylie things but rather later ones like 'your disco needs you' and even tho it has the whole retro 'remember the old days' throwback theme that's really more about matching kylie's sparkly tights, and other pop that ws around at the time like lenny kravitz and deelite... the actual SOUND is way 1990 (think of under construction)

jeremy jordan (cruisy), Wednesday, 28 January 2004 03:12 (twenty-two years ago)

i love "step back in time". As one of the weeklies said at the time: 'remember the O'Jays? Yes, I do, but you don't, sweetie'

and jeremy OTM with the thread title (tho' i think the new one runs it v. close)

zebedee (zebedee), Thursday, 29 January 2004 18:05 (twenty-two years ago)

surely the lyric is 'remember the old days' not O-Jays

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 29 January 2004 18:20 (twenty-two years ago)

"remember the old days, remember the O-Jays", in fact. This is a glorious album, I used to get That Year's Kylie Cassette every year for christmas and this was somehow A Thing Of Substance and way less flimsy than the first two (possibly because it had eleven! tracks instead of ten). Also she did something with Martika's engineer on it, which seemed like the most daring artistic-swerve imaginable for her to the nine-year-old me. And certainly it has the very cream of the Kylie/SAW singles. I must reobtain this post haste.

Alex in Doncaster (Alex in Doncaster), Thursday, 29 January 2004 18:23 (twenty-two years ago)

"Je Ne Sais Pas Pourqoui" is here true masterpiece. Well, one of S/A/W's anyway :-)

Geir Hongro (GeirHong), Thursday, 29 January 2004 19:27 (twenty-two years ago)

NO. HER TRUE MASTERPIECE IS "YOUR DISCO NEEDS YOU".

Chuck Tatum (Chuck Tatum), Thursday, 29 January 2004 20:43 (twenty-two years ago)

no you're all wrong, i didn't choose the title of this thread lightly. anyway stevem i can confirm from the lyrics booklet that it is indeed "remember the ojays" tho i had no idea either until i read it there on the pg because i certainly don't remember the ojays myself.

jeremy jordan (cruisy), Friday, 30 January 2004 04:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Obviously Your Disco Needs You is one of her three masterpieces. I won Rhythm of Love off a kiddie quiz show in the late 80s, and played it to death, but I told everyone that I smashed it because Kylie sux.

edward o (edwardo), Friday, 30 January 2004 04:21 (twenty-two years ago)

jeremy jordan (cruisy), Friday, 30 January 2004 04:28 (twenty-two years ago)
