Of course I don't consider a film "overlooked" unless *I've* overlooked it. I've seen maybe half of these movies.

Hooray for Sneakers!

Harold Media (kenan), Monday, 16 August 2004 15:57 (twenty-one years ago)

That's a weird list. Miller's Crossing? Babe? I suppose the former wasn't a big box office hit, but pretty much all the Coen Bros films get talked about loads.

I'm glad Flirting With Disaster is on there. No Box Of Moonlight or Toto The Hero though.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 16 August 2004 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

that list is bullshit.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 16 August 2004 16:02 (twenty-one years ago)

I mean, if they titled it "Films of the 90s Overlooked By Complete Morons," then maybe they'd have something.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 16 August 2004 16:03 (twenty-one years ago)

Truly, Madly sodding Deeply?

Alba (Alba), Monday, 16 August 2004 16:04 (twenty-one years ago)

Geez, even I've seen loads of those. I guess I agree about L.A. Story, though. And Joe vs. the Volcano.

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 16 August 2004 16:06 (twenty-one years ago)

Sneakers comes up in conversation every now and again...

Jimmy Mod, Man About Towne (ModJ), Monday, 16 August 2004 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

Pump Up the Volume HAW HAW HAW HAW HAW!

I do admit though that I think Cradle Will Rock got nothing like the praise it deserved. Hank Azaria was near perfect in that movie.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 16 August 2004 16:07 (twenty-one years ago)

"Online FIlm Critics Society" = "Films Overlooked by Harry Knowles"?

Harold Media (kenan), Monday, 16 August 2004 16:09 (twenty-one years ago)

this is nuts. safe was voted "best film of the '90s" by the village voice; chungking express was a major event; etc. etc.

i hate the "overlooked"/"underrated" meme because the interesting question is: overlooked by whom--the very sort of attribution these lists tend to avoid.

amateur!!!st, Monday, 16 August 2004 16:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Let's all just agree it's ass and move on.

Alba (Alba), Monday, 16 August 2004 16:17 (twenty-one years ago)

It is ass.

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 16 August 2004 16:19 (twenty-one years ago)

(moving on)

amateur!!!st, Monday, 16 August 2004 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

(applying baby oil)

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 16 August 2004 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Didn't Ghost Dog come out in 2000?

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 16 August 2004 16:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Their definition of an overlooked film appears to be a film that Empire didn't have five alternate holographic covers honouring.

Wooden (Wooden), Monday, 16 August 2004 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

A lot of these are high art, overlooked means not making commerical money.

really overlooked--a deeply commerical project that turned out to be brilliant, which had no right to be anything but medicore.

crosroads is my vote.

anthony, Monday, 16 August 2004 16:22 (twenty-one years ago)

I've seen 48 of these, including the entire top 10.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 16 August 2004 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

What the fuck is Cannibal: The Musical! doing there? Now the question is not who overlooked it, but who they're recommending it to. South Park fans have seen it, and no one else would ever want to.

Harold Media (kenan), Monday, 16 August 2004 16:25 (twenty-one years ago)

I understand Bringing Out the Dead being on there, I thought that was terrific.

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 16 August 2004 16:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Three of those films garnered Best Actor nominations (The Straight Story, Chaplin, and The Apostle).

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 16 August 2004 16:33 (twenty-one years ago)

i hate lists

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 16 August 2004 16:34 (twenty-one years ago)

give me the reasons why, in order

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 16 August 2004 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Deservedly Overlooked Films of the 90s?

Huck, Monday, 16 August 2004 16:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, make that four Best Actor noms: Harrelson for People vs. Larry Flynt as well.

Plus: four were nominated for Best Screenplay: Hamlet, Heavenly Creatures, Lone Star, and The Sweet Hereafter.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 16 August 2004 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

More important question - why isn't "Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead" on this list?

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Monday, 16 August 2004 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Because you told mom, Mandee.

Huck, Monday, 16 August 2004 16:42 (twenty-one years ago)

That was horrible, Huck.

Homosexual II (Homosexual II), Monday, 16 August 2004 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Had to count to compare with John -- I've seen 42. And there are another ten I could easily convince people I've seen in party conversation.

Harold Media (kenan), Monday, 16 August 2004 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Sorry.
I actually remember being sort of interested in seeing that movie. I never did, though.

Huck, Monday, 16 August 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Deservedly Overlooked Films of the 90s?

In many cases. Did anyone else see Twin Falls, Idaho? A laugh riot. Bad, bad, bad, pretentious, and bad.

Harold Media (kenan), Monday, 16 August 2004 16:56 (twenty-one years ago)

I can't reach the list! Truly, Madly, Deeply makes me recoil in fear.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 16 August 2004 16:57 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw Twin Falls, Idaho. I don't really remember much of it, although their follow-up, Northfork was easily my least favorite movie of 2003. The same comments would apply, except you could also add "excruciatingly slow."

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 16 August 2004 16:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Maybe we should turn this into our own Overlooked Films of the '90's list. Though I'm probably just looking for yet another opportunity to recommend High Strung to everyone, if you can find it.

Also, L.A. Story rulez ok?

na (Nick A.), Monday, 16 August 2004 17:02 (twenty-one years ago)

oh, I liked Twin Falls Idaho. Must watch it again sometime.

jel -- (jel), Monday, 16 August 2004 17:05 (twenty-one years ago)

Careful! Extremely heavy-handed symbolism ahead!

Harold Media (kenan), Monday, 16 August 2004 17:07 (twenty-one years ago)

http://www.uwosh.edu/radio_tv_film/assets/images/gattaca-photo11.jpg

It's a double helix. You get it? You get it? You get it?

*hits audience in head with giant mallet*

You get it?

Harold Media (kenan), Monday, 16 August 2004 17:09 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm with everyone on the 'overlooked' label, but I think everyone is 'overlook'ing (sorry) that this is a pretty decent list of the best films of the '90s. And it raises for me the (maybe obvious) point that this was the decade when the 'small' film became the best.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Monday, 16 August 2004 17:11 (twenty-one years ago)

(Even the title of that film is a GATC sequence.)

(expost)

nabisco (nabisco), Monday, 16 August 2004 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I didn't care for Gattaca too much. And Twin Fall, Idaho is much worse. Plus, it's so self-consciously "Lynchian" that you just want to shout at the screen, "You're not clever!"

Harold Media (kenan), Monday, 16 August 2004 17:14 (twenty-one years ago)

I've seen 60 of the movies on that list.

Elvis Telecom (Chris Barrus), Monday, 16 August 2004 17:16 (twenty-one years ago)

LA Story is one of the only romcoms from the 90s that features Enya so prominently in the score that I can still find an emotional reaction to besides disgust. In fact, that movie is totally ace. Definitely one of my favorite somewhat-dramatical Steve Martin roles.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 16 August 2004 17:22 (twenty-one years ago)

i hate lists too, basically. i'd rather someone actually said something of interest about these films.

amateur!!!st, Monday, 16 August 2004 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

I also don't see how a list with so few foreign films could claim to be about the "overlooked."

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 16 August 2004 17:25 (twenty-one years ago)

the overlooked--is this m. night shyamalan's next film?

amateur!!!st, Monday, 16 August 2004 17:30 (twenty-one years ago)

it's the sequel to The Village with the blind girl.

(note: I have not seen that movie but I do know there's a blind girl in it.)

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 16 August 2004 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

okay I'm going to hell, again.

hstencil (hstencil), Monday, 16 August 2004 17:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Overlooked Movies from the 90s That We Shall Continue To Overlook in This Brave New Decade

Huck, Monday, 16 August 2004 17:33 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't think hell really lets you out on shore leave or anything

xpost

amateur!!!st, Monday, 16 August 2004 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm going to write a romantic comedy to star M. Night Shayamalan and Enya.

na (Nick A.), Monday, 16 August 2004 17:34 (twenty-one years ago)

"L.A. Story" doth rule, but that review's kinda rubbish.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Monday, 16 August 2004 22:10 (twenty-one years ago)

No Ruby In Paradise or Ulee's Gold :(

scott seward (scott seward), Monday, 16 August 2004 22:16 (twenty-one years ago)

What the hell?!?! I think I've seen almost every movie on this damn list.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 16 August 2004 22:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Also Freeway and Full Contact's exclusions are criminal!

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Monday, 16 August 2004 22:29 (twenty-one years ago)

Bahaha. The only two Australian films listed - Babe and Priscilla - were box office hits and got that whole "Aussie cinama" thing happening! WTF.

They HAVE overlooked things like Bad Boy Bubby (or was that after 2000?). And fucking Romper Stomper!

I am loving the inclusion of Pump Up the Volume. Geez why don't they put Ferris Buellers in there or something and be done with it.

Trayce (trayce), Monday, 16 August 2004 22:48 (twenty-one years ago)

They haven't included Three Kings. Brilliant film. It was pretty highly acclaimed, but I don't think it won any award of any kind. Not even an MTV award.

Wooden (Wooden), Monday, 16 August 2004 23:11 (twenty-one years ago)

oh man i didn't think anyone else had seen ruby in paradise. that's a great film.

amateur!!!st (amateurist), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 01:42 (twenty-one years ago)

haha "the ref"

Symplistic (shmuel), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 04:31 (twenty-one years ago)

No Box Of Moonlight

they chose the wrong DiCillo, but they did choose one

gabbneb (gabbneb), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 04:32 (twenty-one years ago)

Living In Oblivion is way better than Box of Moonlight IMO, although part of me wonders if either will have dated well by this point.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 04:58 (twenty-one years ago)

List does get props for listing the absolutely fantastic and ACTUALLY ignored Eye of God.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 05:03 (twenty-one years ago)

i would include until the end of the world and delicatessen i think

gem (trisk), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 05:04 (twenty-one years ago)

neither movie dated too well. i found the sam rockwell character too obnoxious to enjoy Box of Moonlight, and movies about making movies became far too cliched during the 90s for Living in Oblivion to have much of an impact (i saw it in 2000 or so).

Symplistic (shmuel), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 05:06 (twenty-one years ago)

i've seen 66.
also, i think we need to talk about how good britney's debut is.
im not even kidding...

anthony, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 05:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahaha I have you beat Anthony, I've seen 81.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 05:09 (twenty-one years ago)

You know, Pump Up The Volume is my favorite movie of all time and all, but yeah, even I'm looking askance at its inclusion on this list. Sure, it may not be an overmentioned teen flick (e.g. the aforementioned Ferris Bueller, Fast Times at Ridgemont High, American Graffiti), but damn, it DOES get mentioned!! Hell, if I'm such a huge fan of this movie, it sure as hell isn't going to be "overlooked".

Having said that, I do think it's time to mention how awesome this film is. Happy Harry Hard-on for FCC Chief!

Many Coloured Halo (Dee the Lurker), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 05:12 (twenty-one years ago)

no "party girl" = this list is incomplete.

J.D. (Justyn Dillingham), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 05:35 (twenty-one years ago)

The list is good at least for reminding me that I wanted to see Lone Star some day. And for leading to this thread that makes me want to see L.A. Story.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 06:21 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh shit! Fuck Party Girl! That movie sucked.

Dan I. (Dan I.), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 06:27 (twenty-one years ago)

Who is more hatable than Parker Posey?

Dan I. (Dan I.), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 06:28 (twenty-one years ago)

I think a lot of people on ILE (and on this thread, in particular) see a lot of movies and a lot of non-mainstream movies. If you want to call those who do not seek out any movies other than those that get a lot of mainstream attention morons, be my guest. But the list wasn't titled "movies overlooked by ILXORS."

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 06:39 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh and I so wanna give some loving to Miss Posey.

oops (Oops), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 06:40 (twenty-one years ago)

No! Noooo! She'll swallow your soul!

Dan I. (Dan I.), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 07:44 (twenty-one years ago)

Priscilla won an Oscar for best costume design. I fail to see how it was "overlooked."

I did notice that Gas Food Lodging was not listed so therefore I call shenanigans on that whole list.

Catty (Catty), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 13:42 (twenty-one years ago)

I just saw Ryan Adams & Parker Posey in a Korean Deli....

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a double helix. You get it? You get it? You get it?

*hits audience in head with giant mallet*

You get it?

Actually that's a single helix, like every other spiral staircase ever made, both the inside and outside rails are locked in phase together. A double helix, like DNA, which I guess is what you were trying to get at, is when there are two concentric spirals 90 degrees out of phase from one another, intertwined. Thank you for playing.

Also to add to this list, Johnny Mnemonic:

Keanu Reeves,
Ice-T,
Henry Rollins,
Dolph Lundgren,
and an animatronic dolphin.

Possibly also the best piece of acting KR has ever done, when he loses his shit under the bridge in Newark.

TOMBOT, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:32 (twenty-one years ago)

I am aware that that is technically a single helix, but I don't think there was a lot of grey area in what they were trying to symbolize.

Harold Media (kenan), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

No Slayer? THIS LIST IS BULLSHIT!!!

Seriously though, any list of overlooked 90's films that doesn't mention Bio-Dome is BANKRUPT AND USELESS.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 16:20 (twenty-one years ago)

latebloomer, you're thinking of the list of "Justifiably Overlooked Films of the 90's" that you've been meaning to write.

eat fudge banana swirl (Nick A.), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 16:23 (twenty-one years ago)

YOU'RE WRONG, BUD-DY.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 16:26 (twenty-one years ago)

whats the name of the movie where jason preistley plays a bookie turned hitman and peter rigert plays his mentor and everythign is full of pugugly ikea furniture. that one is so classic and nobody knwos it. best tarrantinoesque indie comedy ever. haha as if theres a lot of comeptition. king of the shitpile really. but it is awesome, very dry and daedpan.

:|, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 16:31 (twenty-one years ago)

speaking of priestly, he was also in the v. good life and death on long island--which makes the best case in favour of trash culture as sexually seductive wonder...the idea of a dry and dead heterosexual british academic renewed by the cinematic equivalent of beverly hills 90210 makes me happy.

anthony, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 17:12 (twenty-one years ago)

I love Parker Posey and hereby nominate Clockwatchers.

nickn (nickn), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 18:35 (twenty-one years ago)

hm, i blinked and read this as "overwrought films of the '90s"

amateur!!!s4, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 18:37 (twenty-one years ago)

What was the 90s Heaven's Gate?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Hahaha wait it was probably Waterworld wasn't it?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 18:38 (twenty-one years ago)

Dead Again was a crock of shit. I've seen 37 of them. Nice to see some love for Proof, though.

ailsa (ailsa), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 18:51 (twenty-one years ago)

Where's Buffy?

R.I.M.A. (Barima), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 19:33 (twenty-one years ago)

there IS no '90s "heaven's gate." "heaven's gate" is so much of its time.

amateur!!!st, Tuesday, 17 August 2004 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Where's The Craft? So good, so so good.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

THE CRAFT IS A BLACK HOLE OF SHIT. IRONY HAS GONE TOO FAR.

eat fudge banana swirl (Nick A.), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 19:38 (twenty-one years ago)

My Craft-love is completely unironic. Watching it back-to-back with Sleepy Hollow is good fun.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 19:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I win, I've only seen 16 of these.

Mr. Tony Plow (Leee), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 20:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I've seen 13. Plus half of Dick

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 04:44 (twenty-one years ago)

you got shafted.

oops (Oops), Wednesday, 18 August 2004 04:47 (twenty-one years ago)

I've seen all or part of 31. And I never go to the movies.
