La Monte (La Monte), Sunday, 16 January 2005 21:06 (twenty-one years ago)

oh don cherry how will your drunken antics make their way onto nationwide(and some american) television?!

dammit. i now live in Portland, which has no CBC affliate around here.

kingfish (Kingfish), Sunday, 16 January 2005 21:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Movie Night In Canada is horrible, I was hoping CBC would atleast be able to show classic games instead. Playoff time is going to be really rough...

Stan Fields (Stan Fields), Monday, 17 January 2005 00:57 (twenty-one years ago)

Go Leafs Go?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 17 January 2005 02:15 (twenty-one years ago)

boo NHL strike! I now live like six blocks away from the arena and would have access to free tickets!

teeny (teeny), Monday, 17 January 2005 03:23 (twenty-one years ago)

Why you corporate box lounger, you're supposed to suffer and pay for them like anyone else. (Not that I would know.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 17 January 2005 03:29 (twenty-one years ago)

when I was in Montreal, they had simulated scores and standings in the paper. It was cute/sad.

bnw (bnw), Monday, 17 January 2005 03:31 (twenty-one years ago)

Jimmy Mod always makes friends with women before bedding them down (ModJ), Monday, 17 January 2005 03:32 (twenty-one years ago)

The lead story on the NHL.com site:

There didn't appear to be anything wrong with Sidney Crosby's back Saturday night.

Crosby had two goals and four assists to lead the Rimouski Oceanic to an 8-4 win over the Halifax Mooseheads in QMJHL action.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 17 January 2005 03:34 (twenty-one years ago)

The only positive thing to come out of this strike will be the end of Bettman's reign of terror.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Monday, 17 January 2005 03:40 (twenty-one years ago)

The NHL has sucked ass for years and I kinda hope they fold the whole league. The league, as it has become, has made it acceptable for a team like the Jets TO MOVE TO THE FUCKING DESERT and to cities like Nashville where no one gives a fuck about hockey. Fuck it.

Bryan (Bryan), Monday, 17 January 2005 03:44 (twenty-one years ago)

this is a total bummer. I just had a conversation with a guy at the restaurant I was at last night. We were reminiscing about great defensemen we have known and loved. The name 'Eric Weinrich' came up so you know we were getting into the nitty gritty. Man. It made me sad. I hadn't realized how much I am missing this sport right now.

Thing is, I think the players made a pretty decent offer ... what was it, 25% salary cut across the board? That's pretty damn generous! I thought, anyway.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 17 January 2005 03:45 (twenty-one years ago)

the first hockey game I ever attended featured the Winnipeg Jets, so they'll always hold a special place in my heart. White out!

Stormy Davis (diamond), Monday, 17 January 2005 03:46 (twenty-one years ago)

With the exception of Wayne Gretzky going to Los Angeles, Winnipeg losing the Jets was the saddest thing to ever happen to Canadian (professional) hockey.

J-rock (Julien Sandiford), Monday, 17 January 2005 06:25 (twenty-one years ago)

fuck the NHL. i'm ok with the strike.

What I would like is publically owned hockey teams. The Vancouver Canucks would be employees of the city, members of CUPE 15. The organizations could be cut to barebones, tickets would be $15 or something. They'd compete in a canada-wide league of similar civic hockey teams.

derrick (derrick), Monday, 17 January 2005 06:31 (twenty-one years ago)

It's not really a strike, it's a lockout. Just sayin'.

Also, fuck Gary Bettman.

Dan M. (OutDatWay), Monday, 17 January 2005 06:42 (twenty-one years ago)

i fucking hate when the cbc shows french canadian movies DUBBED!!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 17 January 2005 06:47 (twenty-one years ago)

or any movies dubbed for that matter! get it together cbc, you were so proud last year that you were going to show "crouching tiger, hidden dragon" that you advertised it for like two months beforehand and when you finally did it you showed it DUBBED and PAN&SCANNED!!

s1ocki (slutsky), Monday, 17 January 2005 06:48 (twenty-one years ago)

when I was in Montreal, they had simulated scores and standings in the paper.
One of the Toronto papers is doing this too.

I don't miss it right now, because I've got the NFL. I don't really start paying attention to the NHL until March anyway.

I'll have to get more involved with watching early season baseball this year. Cool.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Monday, 17 January 2005 07:22 (twenty-one years ago)

the nat'l post did this, and the canucks were like 30 and 0. very frustrating.

Shmool McShmool (shmuel), Monday, 17 January 2005 08:00 (twenty-one years ago)

i guess there's always figure sktaing

*tries to determine if that move was intentional or not*

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 17 January 2005 09:00 (twenty-one years ago)

due to yesterday's ice storm in portland, many, many people did that move. coincidentally, the ice skating championships were held here, too. michelle kwan powerbombered Michael Weiss thru the ice after a surprise run-in by portland-local tonya harding to retain her title belt.

kingfish (Kingfish), Monday, 17 January 2005 11:17 (twenty-one years ago)

The Iron Giant > Hockey

Simon H. (Simon H.), Monday, 17 January 2005 11:41 (twenty-one years ago)

i live in the UK, so i don't really miss hockey. although when i was back in toronto over the christmas holidays, i was YEARNING to watch some NHL. that pissed me off. but whatever, those expansion teams have been pissing me off anyway. the fucking MIGHTY DUCKS? give me a break. i've always maintained that any city that doesn't get a cold, snowy winter every year has no business supporting an NHL team. dallas, i'm looking in your direction.

and while it's easy to be sad about the winnipeg jets, why does no-one ever shed a tear for the nordiques?

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 17 January 2005 11:51 (twenty-one years ago)

i should clarify - i do miss hockey, but having been here for 2 years, i've been weaned off watching it to the point where i don't really think about it. although i do find myself getting easily frustrating while watching football (soccer). i mean, the game is so goddamn slooooooow.

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 17 January 2005 11:53 (twenty-one years ago)

i can't type today, apparently...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 17 January 2005 11:54 (twenty-one years ago)

give me a break. i've always maintained that any city that doesn't get a cold, snowy winter every year has no business supporting an NHL team. dallas, i'm looking in your direction.

You got to cut some slack to The Kings. They're annoying and had the ugliest uniforms but they survived before it was cool.

employees of the city, members of CUPE 15.

The games would be cut to one period per day and people like Eric Lindros would sit and file union greviences all day.

The only positive thing to come out of this strike will be the end of Bettman's reign of terror.

One can only hope,, even if its not likely. Maybe if we are really lucky the MLS will come take him away. You can have glowing trails on the soccer ball and ban hard/sliding tackles cause soccer is like a grassy ballet.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 17 January 2005 14:09 (twenty-one years ago)

cbc could make up for their entire movie history with a primetime airing of "the dog who stopped the war".

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 17 January 2005 14:12 (twenty-one years ago)

what does everyone actually think will happen to the league, post-strike? fewer teams? no league? a return to a smaller-scale, canadians-only thing? hyphenated-words?

peter smith (plsmith), Monday, 17 January 2005 14:26 (twenty-one years ago)

funny - i was going to reluctantly exempt the LA kings (jesus, those uniforms!). at least they have some NHL pedigree...

Rob Bolton (Rob Bolton), Monday, 17 January 2005 14:38 (twenty-one years ago)

I won't shed a tear if I never see the Blue Jackets, Thrashers, Hurricanes, Coyotes and Senators again.
Couldn't care for the Jets either, but bring back the Whalers and their loveably hideous colours.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 17 January 2005 15:03 (twenty-one years ago)

i think itd be pretty cool if the league cut back to 16 teams or something.

peter smith (plsmith), Monday, 17 January 2005 15:12 (twenty-one years ago)

cbc could make up for their entire movie history with a primetime airing of "the dog who stopped the war".

Speak it!

Huk-L, Monday, 17 January 2005 15:19 (twenty-one years ago)

They tried that trick once before. It barely made up for Check It Out.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 17 January 2005 15:21 (twenty-one years ago)

and while it's easy to be sad about the winnipeg jets, why does no-one ever shed a tear for the nordiques?

OTM. I mean, they actually had a good team and the Avalanche won the freakin' Cup the year after they moved to Colorado.

alex in montreal, Monday, 17 January 2005 15:22 (twenty-one years ago)

That had as much to do with the defection of P.Roy as their line-up (which was about as good as it good in the mid-90s).
I was living in Quebec during the winter of 95/96, and their was a fair amount of bitterness, esp. since the Habs got their new arena that year.

Huk-L, Monday, 17 January 2005 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

They had a horrible team for years in Quebec, but alot of young talent coming their way thanks to big baby Eric.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 17 January 2005 15:39 (twenty-one years ago)

x-post:

It must have been especially frustrating since that great lineup was cultivated through years of high draft picks due to very poor teams, so finally guys like Sakic, Sundin, Nolan, Forsberg (via Lindros) were at or nearing their peak.

I don't really recall, but how did Marcel Aubut get the approval from the NHL to sell and move the team?

alex in montreal, Monday, 17 January 2005 15:44 (twenty-one years ago)

That was my silver lining for the lock-out. The hope that it would force some of the more recent expansion teams to just go away.

I'm thinking Lacrosse might be an interesting thing to fill the void. That and possibly a good ol' fashioned crime spree!

Thermo Thinwall (Thermo Thinwall), Monday, 17 January 2005 16:37 (twenty-one years ago)

Speaking of which -- did you Canucks ever officially change your national sport from LAX to Hockey?

Jimmy Mod always makes friends with women before bedding them down (ModJ), Monday, 17 January 2005 16:38 (twenty-one years ago)

No, and now we OWN Heather Locklear.

Huk-L, Monday, 17 January 2005 16:39 (twenty-one years ago)

The Rock are indeed a funish experience.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 17 January 2005 16:40 (twenty-one years ago)

xpost - Apparently, CBC thinks the void is filled and rioting avoided via old movies they show every year and undercooked new shows (what was that thing with Colin Mochrie? And "Walter Ego" made me really not want to move to Toronto ever. But at least former Kids in the Hall are getting more work, I guess.) Iron Giant followed by Star Wars was a good idea, however.

rrrobyn (rrrobyn), Monday, 17 January 2005 16:50 (twenty-one years ago)

it appears i might be the only one who remembers "the dog who stopped the war". slocki you're my last hope.

mark p (Mark P), Monday, 17 January 2005 16:51 (twenty-one years ago)

No you're not

alex in montreal, Monday, 17 January 2005 16:54 (twenty-one years ago)

there should be no professional hockey teams in red states.

Shmool McShmool (shmuel), Monday, 17 January 2005 19:09 (twenty-one years ago)

That way none of the American teams would ever win.

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 17 January 2005 19:14 (twenty-one years ago)

In my opinion the NHL regular season was always sort of boring, the occaisional good game (high scoring or, even better, standout goaltending) peppering the vast wasteland of 1-1 ties.

Nothing beats the NHL playoffs though. I would be genuinely sad if the NHL folded only because throughout my young life I have grown accustomed to spending at least one day a year watching an NHL playoff game hit OT number 3 or above, and that is always good stuff, even if you don't care who wins. Actually, especially if you don't care who wins. I am unfortunate enough to be a fan of the worst franchise in the history of professional sports, so playoff hockey hasn't been a concern for the last decade or so. I can't even imagine how heartbroken a fan would be after their team lost a 5 OT game (any penguins fans in the house?).

I'm all for contraction of the league, but I hope they leave the playoffs alone. They are brilliant as is.

Ash (ashbyman), Monday, 17 January 2005 21:31 (twenty-one years ago)

the worst franchise in the history of professional sports

The Chicago Cubs play hockey?

Mr Noodles (Mr Noodles), Monday, 17 January 2005 21:38 (twenty-one years ago)

actually, the vancouver grizzlies have the worst winning percentage of any north american professional team. and i've been to their games.

also, the rangers beat the canucks for the cup ten years ago. so don't complain.

Shmool McShmool (shmuel), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 04:24 (twenty-one years ago)

i haven't forgotten it mark! perhaps some of us here know it by its french title, la guerre des tuques!
