chaki (chaki), Monday, 17 March 2003 03:41 (twenty-three years ago)

they suck

see, peasy

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 17 March 2003 03:44 (twenty-three years ago)

What Jess said.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 17 March 2003 03:48 (twenty-three years ago)

they aren't anything special but they have maybe 4 or so decent songs. thats all. you should hate queens of the stone age instead.

JP Albin (John Paul Albin), Monday, 17 March 2003 03:49 (twenty-three years ago)

i know they suck but i want to read some guy's big long paragraph on why they suck and i dont think QOFTA have enough personality for me to even form an opinion

chaki (chaki), Monday, 17 March 2003 03:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Hopefully I can find a copy of my Mark-McGrath-angering Transistor review "311 Dish Out More Tuneless Drivel" from high school.

I remember saying that my fave song on the album "Prisoner," sounded like Vanilla Ice at the Tiki-Tiki Room.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 17 March 2003 03:50 (twenty-three years ago)

Anal Cunt said it best -- "311 Sucks."

Tad (llamasfur), Monday, 17 March 2003 03:54 (twenty-three years ago)

Listen to them and it will be self-evident.

Citizen Fred (Citizen Fred), Monday, 17 March 2003 03:56 (twenty-three years ago)

yah but the song they said it in sucked itself which kind of ruined their whole argument. anthony post your review!

Listen to them and it will be self-evident.

are you into s&m? id rather read about it, thanks.

chaki (chaki), Monday, 17 March 2003 03:57 (twenty-three years ago)

surely Fred didn't mean that you have to listen to everything 311 has put out. just a 15-second listening should be enough to convince you beyond any reasonable doubt about their utter suckiness!

Tad (llamasfur), Monday, 17 March 2003 04:00 (twenty-three years ago)

if I find it at home I'll post it tomorrow, Chaki.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 17 March 2003 04:04 (twenty-three years ago)

because they're a bunch of midwestern white guys who seem to think their shitty, 'funky' rock music somehow qualifies as reggae in some universe, somewhere. and they have the balls to call it 'dub' and refer to themselves as "reggae soundsystem three-one-one." cocksnapplers.

your null fame (yournullfame), Monday, 17 March 2003 04:18 (twenty-three years ago)

Surely they're fans alone are reason enough to hate them

girl scout heroin (iamamonkey), Monday, 17 March 2003 04:52 (twenty-three years ago)

Maybe I should have said, "if you listen to them, it would be self-evident."

But to tell you the truth, a little torture is always a good thing.

Citizen Fred (Citizen Fred), Monday, 17 March 2003 05:15 (twenty-three years ago)

My sister and her boyfriend LOVE 311 - they go see them all the time -apparently, since their heyday, they've attained something of a mythical status, popular among tape traders and other weird cultist types. Kinda like the whole A-Ha thing, and The Church too - ever meet those people who INSIST that these bands are more than their "hits" etc etc? Anyway they are VERY loyal. Weird.

By the way, they're terrible.

roger adultery (roger adultery), Monday, 17 March 2003 05:42 (twenty-three years ago)

uh, listen to their followers. there would be no Linkin Park w/o them. i heard a tape of LP's before they became big and it was a total 311 rip off.

and that white boy rap thing really sucks (not all white boys who rap suck, but that white boy sing rap style is the shits)

JasonD (JasonD), Monday, 17 March 2003 05:47 (twenty-three years ago)

its white boy sing rap jamaica stylee mon
arizona in da houze

girl scout heroin (iamamonkey), Monday, 17 March 2003 06:02 (twenty-three years ago)

haha, I've heard all the big fans sport the 311 tees on March 11th. (3/11 gettit??) Sounds cultist and weird to me. Too bad I forgot to keep an eye out this year, but there's always next...

And I won't be breaking any ground here, but yeah, they sux0r. Music for white guys with dreads.

original bgm, Monday, 17 March 2003 06:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I cant think of a band I dislike more

girl scout heroin (iamamonkey), Monday, 17 March 2003 07:17 (twenty-three years ago)

"their fans are reason enough to hate them"
"music for white boys with dreads"

i knew this thread would bring about some really idiotic quotes.

chaki (chaki), Monday, 17 March 2003 08:48 (twenty-three years ago)

That about sums it up though chaki

girl scout heroin (iamamonkey), Monday, 17 March 2003 11:06 (twenty-three years ago)

Let me elaborate. Dim witted fans who like to sing along and dress alike. Horrible style that inspired one too many speed metal teenagers to become quasi skate/hippy wannabe po faced schmucks.
Fans of 311 are like fans of Phish. They share the same flawed DNA

girl scout heroin (iamamonkey), Monday, 17 March 2003 11:24 (twenty-three years ago)

i like 'down'

minna (minna), Monday, 17 March 2003 12:59 (twenty-three years ago)

all i gots to say is URBAN DANCE SQUAD.
311 is crap. if there's a reason to dislike them, it's the really whiney singer/rapper guy.
and they're propensity for drug references. just dumb stuff.
the music is semi ok, but the vocals just kill me and not in that good way.
diss the QotSA? why'zat? cause they're alright and had one of the best albums of 2002? and now get press? and have way too many fans??

eedd, Monday, 17 March 2003 13:20 (twenty-three years ago)

QOTSA are GRATE!. One of the few bands that can actually rock w/o apeing history or coming off as ironic amateurs. Best rock album of 2002
And certainly the only decent thing you might hear on a ClearChannel station. How do they get lumped together with 311? 311 are redneck rock in the south. QOTSA are more likley to be heard inbetween Neurosis and Isis where I live (New Orleans)

girl scout heroin (iamamonkey), Monday, 17 March 2003 13:45 (twenty-three years ago)

Of course once again the nickalicious is full of shame for liking and having enjoyed in concert another not-approved-by-ILM band. And then I hock the shame up and spit it onto Jimmy Iovine's shoe, and all is well again in the universe. (Although I must agree that SA Martinez's voice is very often cringe-worthy. I do quite like their harmonizing though.)

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 17 March 2003 13:53 (twenty-three years ago)

i knew this thread would bring about some really idiotic quotes.

Yeah, not my proudest momment but 311 just brings out the hate something fierce. GRRRRRR.

original bgm, Monday, 17 March 2003 14:04 (twenty-three years ago)

My blood boils

girl scout heroin (iamamonkey), Monday, 17 March 2003 14:14 (twenty-three years ago)

Although I must say I'm not too down with the hating-bands-because-of-their-fans thing; what does that have to do with the music? I mean, people don't go around hating certain kinds of food because certain kinds of people eat it, do they?

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 17 March 2003 14:22 (twenty-three years ago)

I hate sushi now because the sushi bar became overrun with cell phone yakking douche bags. And now they are ruining my love of vietnamese cuisine and bubble teas. Some people just suck!

girl scout heroin (iamamonkey), Monday, 17 March 2003 14:26 (twenty-three years ago)

what does that have to do with the music?

Nothing really, it was a cheap shot more-or-less.

original bgm, Monday, 17 March 2003 14:29 (twenty-three years ago)

In all seriousness though I am turned off by certain bands fans. If John Mayer wrote "Northern Sky" tommorrow I couldn't seperate it from the live experience of the slumber party/sorority date atmosphere he attracts at say the House of blues. It just makes his music suck all the more.

girl scout heroin (iamamonkey), Monday, 17 March 2003 14:32 (twenty-three years ago)

I hate the 311 sticker on the back windshield the most. Its just so gay

girl scout heroin (iamamonkey), Monday, 17 March 2003 14:35 (twenty-three years ago)

i don't think 311 is part of the unrelenting agenda of the secret homosexual cabal.

but yeah, it is pretty gay.

your null fame (yournullfame), Monday, 17 March 2003 16:51 (twenty-three years ago)

girl scout heroin, your posts make you look MUCH worse then then 311!

Dim witted fans who like to sing along and dress alike. Horrible style that inspired one too many speed metal teenagers to become quasi skate/hippy wannabe po faced schmucks.

you could be talking about 311, misfits or bauhaus here and by your logic i shouldnt like any of them.

chaki (chaki), Monday, 17 March 2003 17:13 (twenty-three years ago)

chaki,

offer some proof that you aren't a buttwipe

spoon fed dog, Monday, 17 March 2003 17:19 (twenty-three years ago)

OK, but aren't we allowed an irrational bias every once in a while? That's part of what makes a musical obsession so fun, I like hating bands for no good reason sometimes (i.e. their fans). Sure, it may be ignorant in most cases but I don't think I'm missing out on a world of musical bliss with 311, really.

original bgm, Monday, 17 March 2003 17:23 (twenty-three years ago)

And were you just baiting for a response like this anyway, chaki?

original bgm, Monday, 17 March 2003 17:23 (twenty-three years ago)

Can I say FUCK THE DIXIE CHIMPS on this thread?

order some disorder quick, Monday, 17 March 2003 17:27 (twenty-three years ago)

I didn't even realize that irrational bias has its own thread now.

original bgm, Monday, 17 March 2003 17:47 (twenty-three years ago)

I think, since their first 3 albums, 311 has been very much hit-or-miss, and the stagnation of their creative process (ie, the way they've been pretty much writing songs the same way for so long) seems to have made their most recent few albums kinda not-focused and thrown together. Their first couple albums though, Grassroots fr'instance, I thought were SOLID. Since the "blue album", they've had a couple good songs on each album, but they don't seem to have put together one really focused effort since their earlier days.

And as for the original question...

Chaki, you should hate 311 'cause they pee'd in your soda.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 17 March 2003 17:52 (twenty-three years ago)

chaki,

offer some proof that you aren't a buttwipe

oh c'mon. thats the kind of response a portishead fan would say.

Chaki, you should hate 311 'cause they pee'd in your soda.

what up nick. you guys should really come to la and play with me. re 311: i think 'Do You Right' was a great single.

chaki (chaki), Monday, 17 March 2003 17:55 (twenty-three years ago)

It'll be awhile before we make it out to LA, but shit yeah I'm down!

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 17 March 2003 18:00 (twenty-three years ago)

why? money? what if i hooked up a good show with say..f-bone or weapon on choice. would that motivate you guys?

chaki (chaki), Monday, 17 March 2003 18:02 (twenty-three years ago)

chaki,

I knew you couldn't do it!

Hey Ned! Pay up, you Burke Shelley looking fool.

order some disorder quick, Monday, 17 March 2003 18:09 (twenty-three years ago)

couldnt do what?

chaki (chaki), Monday, 17 March 2003 18:12 (twenty-three years ago)

chaki, why are you talking to yourself?

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 17 March 2003 18:13 (twenty-three years ago)

are you being sarcastic?

chaki (chaki), Monday, 17 March 2003 18:14 (twenty-three years ago)

chaki,

yeah, that's right!

order some disorder quick, Monday, 17 March 2003 18:32 (twenty-three years ago)

chaki (chaki), Monday, 17 March 2003 18:35 (twenty-three years ago)

why? money?

A) yes, we don't got much $$$
B) we also lack cross-country transport
C) we're working on it though
D) we're hoping to make it out to Cali late this summer

Rza's teeth = best comeback evah.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Monday, 17 March 2003 18:38 (twenty-three years ago)

This is like the poor man's Dave Matthews Band thread.

jaymc (jaymc), Monday, 3 October 2005 19:48 (twenty years ago)

jaymc is right on, the DMB thread worked this same territory but so much better...

I'll try and get something going here by saying that 311 aren't all THAT bad. I liked them a lot in 9th grade when the blue album was big and they have a surprising number of singles that I don't hate. "Down" and "Loco" are pretty much in the category of a guilty pleasure/nostalgia hit for me, but the rest of these are catchy, solid songs as far as I'm concerned: Don't Stay Home, Homebrew, All Mixed Up, Prisoner (maybe the best of the bunch AFAIC), Transistor...hrm, there are probably more. Yeah, okay, the drug references are often inane ("Trip the shrooms fantastic / shit gets drastic"?) and the rapping dude has a knack for walking into the songs with the most potential and completely ruining them, but spin it this way: they could have been SO much worse. IOW, they could have been Linkum Park, but they actually came up with a few good things instead. Again, "Prisoner." "Twilight zone, twilight zone, I'm floating in the dark alone..." Great overdubs there. Love it.

Your rhymes have been outmoded

You're saying that your tortured
Give me a fuckin break and
Maybe take out the source
Of your disparing what do I mean
