Most Iditotic Things YOU'VE Said About Music.

I've got some doozies from when I was gobbling down pills, namely:

"Dude this track is so hot I can't even deal with it! *puts back of hand to forehead and pretends to faint*

Instead of just saying something sensible like "this is the shit", I said, "Oh man, this beat is the TOPIC!" GROOOOAN

Otherwise:

Terrible predictive skills while watching bhangra music vids at brown friend's house some years ago: "Dude, I swear, I'm going to be the only non-paki in the world to ever like paki music."

At school my friend and I answered a school survey of favourite music with "Milli Vanilli", about one month before Rob & Fab's lipsyncing hijinks were outed and routed. Also around this time, I got caught out "singing" to the operatic part of "Bohemian Rhapsody" without actually knowing any of the words.

I don't think there's enough bandwith available to encapsulate all the ill-conceived vitriol that's shot out of my mouth about music.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 25 January 2004 15:55 (twenty-two years ago)

What Alex said. You'd have to nuke the rockcritics.com server and the Pitchfork letter-to-the-editor archives to erase a great deal of dumb shit with my name under it, and then you'd be maybe only halfway there.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Sunday, 25 January 2004 16:58 (twenty-two years ago)

My roommate listens to a lot of "dance-punk" I guess. He and I have this game where no matter what he's playing I put on my stupid voice and say "uh... is this the rapture??" It's really funny (and idiotic) when it's, like, Gang of 4..

Sonny A. (Keiko), Sunday, 25 January 2004 18:00 (twenty-two years ago)

I found an old journal I had to keep in second grade, and at the time I was really into country music. What I said was:

"Hooray for rap music! It makes you want to listen to something else."

juiceboxxx (juiceboxxx), Sunday, 25 January 2004 19:07 (twenty-two years ago)

But Kurt Cobain was a talentless hick!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 25 January 2004 19:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Kurt just couldn't preform live.

That's why one of my mom's friends said, sarcasticly:
"Nirvana are going to be big!"

He said that after seeing them live. Before Nevermind came out.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 25 January 2004 19:26 (twenty-two years ago)

He's dead. They're over. Let's all move on, shall we?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 25 January 2004 19:28 (twenty-two years ago)

I have.

I've been meaning to tell you...

Nirvana are no longer my second favorite band. Killing Joke is.

Nirvana is like fourth in line now.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 25 January 2004 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Snap your their albums in half, Aja, and I'll be ready to believe you.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 25 January 2004 19:30 (twenty-two years ago)

No!

Why don't you believe me?

Is there anything else I can do to make you believe me?

I have been listening to Revelations and Firedances repeatedly for a whlie now.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 25 January 2004 19:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Leonard Cohen would make a really good cover of Backstreet Boys "As long as you love me"

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 25 January 2004 20:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I have that one.

I have it on vinyl. I've only listened to one side of it so far. To be honest, I don't like it nearly as much as their other albums I have. The songs on there sound like songs from a musical and I'm getting sick of musicals. I've seen too many in music class. The last three were all set in New York City too. And I just went to New York.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 25 January 2004 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Haha!

Ferrrrrrg (Ferg), Sunday, 25 January 2004 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)

What's funny?

Aja (aja), Sunday, 25 January 2004 20:20 (twenty-two years ago)

alex (as well as a number of people here) lives in NYC! i live in hoboken!!

did you see roadhouse the musical when you were in new york?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 25 January 2004 20:22 (twenty-two years ago)

It's funny because that album is very bad. But it turns out you thought so anyway so the nefarious plan to corrupt AINYC's gospel failed.

Ferrrrrrg (Ferg), Sunday, 25 January 2004 20:23 (twenty-two years ago)

No. I saw Mission of Burma and a one man preformance about Freddie Mercury.

I didn't think Alex could have liked that album that much any way. I remember reading something he said about the song "America" which is on that album. I think he called it a disappointment.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 25 January 2004 20:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Mission of Burma are great.
Killing Joke are awesome.
Nirvana are overrated.

Note the header.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Sunday, 25 January 2004 20:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Nirvana are overrated.

Mission of Burma and Killing Joke are both great live.

When I went to the Mission of Burma concert, my mom's friend who told us about Jaz' disabilities and needing to have his shoes tied was with us. I steped on my shoe lace and he was standing mext to me. I asked him to tie my shoes. Then I called to my mom. I said, "I'm Jaz Coleman!"

Then we went over to her. She said, "Jaz is the man who has his shoes tied by a youn girl and Aja is, of course, the young girl having her shoes tied by a man."

Aja (aja), Sunday, 25 January 2004 20:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Outside the Gate might easily be the most flawed endeavor ever undertaken by Killing Joke, but it's still light years better than virtually anything espoused by the nonsense-clouded likes of Nate "apt last name" Detritus.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 25 January 2004 21:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually like to sing along to "America." But in the middle of all that I burst out laughing.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 25 January 2004 21:20 (twenty-two years ago)

Pft. At least I like more than one band, old man.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Sunday, 25 January 2004 21:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Nice try, child. Even a casual glance over the ILM threads reveals I have a great love for many a band. I just happen to have one particular favorite.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Sunday, 25 January 2004 21:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex likes lots of bands.

Where is that comment I saw where he put a whole long list of most of the bands he likes. I think it was on the Dave Matthews thread.

Man Alex. That was one long list. I didn't even read the whole thing.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 25 January 2004 21:25 (twenty-two years ago)

That you won't ever fucking shut up about. You might sort of understand that some of us are a bit sick of the "everything ties into Jaz Coleman" approach.

But, y'know, maybe if you wouldn't spend the 80% of your posts not used to fawn over Killing Joke and the rare non-Killing Joke band shitting on everything from Nirvana to nearly every hip-hop act ever, I wouldn't be having this inane exchange with ya.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Sunday, 25 January 2004 21:26 (twenty-two years ago)

How dare you dishonor the fire!

Alex does post alot about Killing Joke, but come on. Be nice. Accept him for who he is. THE BIGGEST KILLING JOKE FAN EVER!

Aja (aja), Sunday, 25 January 2004 21:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Christ, y'all're worse than Fugazi fans and Sleater-Kinney fans combined.

I'd accept him a bit more readily if he put away his fucking nailgun.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Sunday, 25 January 2004 21:29 (twenty-two years ago)

What's wrong with the nailgun?

Aja (aja), Sunday, 25 January 2004 21:31 (twenty-two years ago)

y'see, some of us like certain artists and songs (such as Jay-Z's "Change Clothes") and do not really like it when some people overreact to the point where they wish death on the musician in question.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Sunday, 25 January 2004 21:32 (twenty-two years ago)

It's so fuckin' 10th grade (and yeah I know this is a total reversal of the "old man" thing; and yeah I also know that for Aja 10th grade is still a ways off)

nate detritus (natedetritus), Sunday, 25 January 2004 21:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, come on. No one is really going to shoot those people with a nailgun. It's like an empty threat in a way. That thread just allows people to vent their anger towards the artists and songs that annoy them.

Aja (aja), Sunday, 25 January 2004 21:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Enh, I'm just tired of seeing the 489th thread about "LIST THE SHIT SONG YOU HATE BY SHIT ARTISTS AND DON'T MENTION WHY BECAUSE IT SHOULD LIKE TOTALLY BE A GIVEN WHY THEY'RE SHIT!" I'm also tired of people just violently overreacting to music[*], maybe because it's a phase I sort of ditched a while back and kind of look back on with embarrassment.

*violently overreacting to things other people say about music? Now that's my thing

nate detritus (natedetritus), Sunday, 25 January 2004 21:38 (twenty-two years ago)

(I got nothing serious against Killing Joke and their few good albums or Mission of Burma and their two good songs*, I just like workin' up fanboys; see also Velvet Underground)

*I keed I keed

Aja (aja), Sunday, 25 January 2004 21:43 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm also tired of people just violently overreacting to music[*], maybe because it's a phase I sort of ditched a while back and kind of look back on with embarrassment.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 25 January 2004 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

did you ever hear the song "if i had a hammer," aja?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 25 January 2004 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

or "if i had a rocket launcher"?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 25 January 2004 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

No

Aja (aja), Sunday, 25 January 2004 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Or "If I Had a Million Dollars?"

(it's about buying people monkeys)

nate detritus (natedetritus), Sunday, 25 January 2004 21:57 (twenty-two years ago)

i was making a joke ... "if i had a hammer" -- "if i had a nailgun." see?

Eisbär (llamasfur), Sunday, 25 January 2004 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah.

If you had a nailgun, would you really need a hammer?

Aja (aja), Sunday, 25 January 2004 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

"If I Had a Nailgun" is the mid '90s techno-industrial remix

nate detritus (natedetritus), Sunday, 25 January 2004 22:00 (twenty-two years ago)

If you had a nailgun, would you really need a hammer?

no, i guess you wouldn't.

Huh? Oh, Alex, this thread was so two hours ago

nate detritus (natedetritus), Monday, 26 January 2004 00:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Wow, this thread was pretty cool (I like Sonny's anecdote because I do the same thing with Hot Hot Heat) and heartwarming - until ILM's most compulsive feeling-catchers showed up. A conversation with you guys would be like hanging out in one of those apartments where every object looks like it'll break if you touch it but the host keeps going "haha chill out and makes yourselves at home haha blah blah it means nothing to me!" (but you know it does).

"The only good band to come out of Canada was Rush!" (age 16)
"The only good band to come out of Canada is Voivod!" (age 20)

Etc. Pretty embarrassing, I know; but at LEAST I never liked the Barenaked Crashpuppies or whatever the hell they're called. Besides, everybody knows that the only good band to come out of Canada was Simply Saucer!

It's actually more like getting a lift home with a bunch of people who start speaking in Welsh to each other, and you feel vaguely resentful about it and then vaguely guilty and confused for doing so.

i thought my aunt would be pleased when i told her that her singing voice was better than Lita Ford's.

(she wasn't, and it took days for her to talk to me again. keep in mind that she's only about 15 years older than i am, and was probably about...22 or 23 at the time? XD)

janni (janni), Monday, 26 January 2004 15:46 (twenty-two years ago)

I was just thinking about this the other night. I once reviewed one of Rob Mazurek's Chicago Underground albums and dismissed it as, among other things, "music about music." It deserved to be dismissed, but that was pretty idiotic in hindsight.

And now I feel better.

Haha!

Gear! (Gear!), Monday, 26 January 2004 18:45 (twenty-two years ago)

the stupidest thing anyone can say about music is to dismiss an entire genre. I have fallen prey to this a few times. How foolish I was.

age 13 "grunge? this is stupid, they can't sing!"
age 14 "rap is stupid, it's just people talking"
age 16 "country is stupid and whiny and unsophisticated"
age 17 "metal is dumb, it requires no talent"
age 20 "reggae is boring, it all sounds the same"
age 21 "jam bands are for stupid hippies"

Kevin Erickson, Monday, 26 January 2004 20:17 (twenty-two years ago)
