I'd almost be interested in readings on singles released by already successful artists that then flopped.

I read about this this morning. I wondered how the program would respond if fed data from Pink Floyd's "Dark Side of the Moon" or perhaps Led Zep 4

Do freelance journalists have any rights at all to pitched stories - say if the pitches ares exclusive/plotted out in a specific manner? Or is a paper freely entitled to turn down a pitched idea, and then get a permanant staff member to write it?

If it knows what will be a hit, shouldn't it be able to simply generate the perfect hit song?

In theory, sounds like a good idea; especially to test it. At worst, you ought to be able to randomly generate tunes very quickly and filter out the ones that scored highly.

I suppose it's possible it takes a long time to test whether or not a tune will be a hit or not.
