s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 02:17 (twenty-one years ago)

never trust a big butt and a smile.

Al (sitcom), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 02:18 (twenty-one years ago)

one of the biggest classics of the 90s.

and the only salvagable song to come out of the clusterfuck of barbershop, party rap and R&B known as new jack swing.

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 02:18 (twenty-one years ago)

ME AND THE CREW USED TO DO HER

ARE YOU KIDDING!! New Jack was the thing! You musta been a little boy i mean age 4 or 5 i was 11 and remember new jack being the greatest

Startrekman, Tuesday, 18 January 2005 02:23 (twenty-one years ago)

It would be classic even if it was just that beat for four minutes.

And yeah, New Jack was one great single after another. This was the pinnacle, though, or close to it.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 02:25 (twenty-one years ago)

rollie you crazy dissing new jack swing, you will never get a ride to burger shot from me dude!

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 02:25 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah, Rollie, yr jumping the gun on yr New Jack hatred; this song rules but there were a few more good ones too. remember: with no new jack swing, no neptunes/timba/missy e, so no hatred unless you are made of poison

speaking of which, this song is pure misogynistic boys-afeared-of-ladeez monster classic, reprehensible but smooth; the best part is that ricky bell was so ugly that the pharcyde used him to anchor a mother joke

Haibun (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 02:27 (twenty-one years ago)

if i was you rollie i'd take precauuuutionnnn!

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 02:28 (twenty-one years ago)

chris andrews (fraew), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 02:31 (twenty-one years ago)

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 02:34 (twenty-one years ago)

Classic, naturellement. The whole album's pretty good, I've got it around somewhere.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 02:36 (twenty-one years ago)

So classic, in all its riki-tiki snare fill goodness. I really want to hear it now.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 02:36 (twenty-one years ago)

classic 4eva

owen reading, Tuesday, 18 January 2005 02:37 (twenty-one years ago)

poison, poison, poison, poison....

Startrekman, Tuesday, 18 January 2005 02:40 (twenty-one years ago)

I was once marooned
in an apartment alone
no bed, no TV,

nothing except for
a radio, a walkman,
and THIS on cassette

Haibun (Begs2Differ), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 02:42 (twenty-one years ago)

But was it a good or bad experience? Or just overplayed?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 02:45 (twenty-one years ago)

TRUE STORY: the rolling stone review of this which compared it to exile on main st. is what convinced me to get that album (exile, not poison)("yo rick blow" convinced me to get poison).

j blount (papa la bas), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 02:46 (twenty-one years ago)

i don't like new jack in the least but i think i quite liked this. i vaguely remember it being next to poison's "unskinny bop" in the charts - can anyone prove me right?

dog latin (dog latin), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 02:55 (twenty-one years ago)

classic smoothed out on the dud tip with a classic feel/appeal to it

autovac (autovac), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 02:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay I downloaded it and it's even better than I remember. That bassline is fucking nasty.

Jordan (Jordan), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 02:56 (twenty-one years ago)

yeah its gritty as fuck..

chris andrews (fraew), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 03:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Even today, huge dancefloor classic.......gets the crowd screaming.

pheNAM (pheNAM), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 03:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Classic intro. TA TA-t-TA TA-t-TA-t-TA BLAOW!

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 03:17 (twenty-one years ago)

I rediscovered this a few years ago on the Pootie Tang soundtrack. Stone cold classick.

Huk-L, Tuesday, 18 January 2005 05:23 (twenty-one years ago)

OMG SO CLASSIC, are you kidding me? The best thing to come out of the East Coast Family (Boyz II Men, ABC, BBD). And yes, I believe Dog Latin is correct about it being on the charts near "Unskinny Bop."

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 05:33 (twenty-one years ago)

What about Sudden Impact?

Hurting (Hurting), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 05:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 05:37 (twenty-one years ago)

100% classic.

daria g (daria g), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 07:01 (twenty-one years ago)

someone do a quick s/d of new jack? a short comp listing maybe?

firstworldman (firstworldman), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 07:23 (twenty-one years ago)

maybe someone should tell me what the other good new jack swing songs are because if my older sister's bedroom circa 1991 is any indication, more than half of that shit was BUNK.

i can't say i don't bump that station on gta but come on, folk, what are these other 'poison' worthy songs? maybe i should just call my sister or something.

Rollie Pemberton (Rollie Pemberton), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 07:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Voici la. Et la. Et la la la.

I thought of one I like as much as "Poison" -- "Her," off the second Guy album. All the fellas in the house, lemme hear ya say, lemme hear ya say, lemme hear ya say...

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 09:10 (twenty-one years ago)

its good yeah.just good. Her is better gypsy named it.

thagregman, Tuesday, 18 January 2005 09:15 (twenty-one years ago)

was bbd (i thought it was me) about a bike (friendly port) ?
"she was like that with ALL those other guys ?

gohnny jil, Tuesday, 18 January 2005 09:22 (twenty-one years ago)

the way the harmony on 'Poison' (during the bridge and breakdown bit) drifts into this illusionary off-kilter chord then back 'on track' is so cool - there's this profound tinge of mystery and possibly even despair in their collective voices when it occurs. and the beat's off all kinds of hooks, even today.

Stevem On X (blueski), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 09:40 (twenty-one years ago)

Classic. One of the radio highlights of my freshman year of high school. It was a hit a few months before "Unskinny Bop." The immortal follow-up "Do Me!" was on the charts at the same time as "Unskinny Bop."

A Rolling Stone review comparing BBD with "Exile On Main Street"? Did Chuck write it?

John Fredland (jfredland), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 11:34 (twenty-one years ago)

This is seriously one of the greatest songs ever recorded.

The Ghost of Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 14:08 (twenty-one years ago)

John did you make the reference to 'Unskinny Bop' before/without reading doglatin's post? how odd!

Stevem On X (blueski), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 14:35 (twenty-one years ago)

(sorry dl's post is on the thread i linked to above)

Stevem On X (blueski), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 14:36 (twenty-one years ago)

Thanks to whoever posted a link to an MP3 of "Iesha" on a related thread a few weeks ago, btw. We had cereallllllllllllll ...

Joseph McCombs (Joseph McCombs), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 14:48 (twenty-one years ago)

y'welcome. And now I shall soulseek the heck outta the new jack swing opo thread. Some real winners in there.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 15:04 (twenty-one years ago)

TRUE STORY: the rolling stone review of this which compared it to exile on main st. is what convinced me to get that album (exile, not poison)("yo rick blow" convinced me to get poison).

Get the fuck out of here. They didn't, did they?

classic smoothed out on the dud tip with a classic feel/appeal to it

Hahahahahahaha

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 15:16 (twenty-one years ago)

The soaring "POISOOOOONNNNN" punctuated with the percussive "POIson!"

Sing it with them:

That song is CLAAASIIIIIIIC ...

Classic!

Classic!

And someone has to come across with that RS review!

Rick Massimo (Rick Massimo), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 15:26 (twenty-one years ago)

It's a classic, albeit a problematic one. Time hasn't softened the tune's rather repellent misogyny. This new edition of New Edition wants to shag this girl, and yet still dismiss her as a slut and a ho.

That said, time hasn't softenedt he tune either. The beats are still phat. New jack swing was great, wasn' t it? Remember "Just Got Paid"? Al B. Sure?

Alfred Soto (Alfred Soto), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 17:23 (twenty-one years ago)

"our music is mentally hip-hop smoothed out on the r&b tip with a pop feel apeal to it"

classic!

anyone who could make me a new jack classics cd-r please email me at the address below. ok thx bye,

artdamages (artdamages), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 17:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't trust anyone who doesn't dance to this song whenever and wherever it gets played. Brilliant, obv.

The Lex (The Lex), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 18:01 (twenty-one years ago)

the trouble is it pretty much demands RHYTHM NATION style choreography or nothing

Stevem On X (blueski), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 20:16 (twenty-one years ago)

"our music is mentally hip-hop smoothed out on the r&b tip with a pop feel apeal to it"

I've got their video comp of the same name. Crucial.

miccio (miccio), Tuesday, 18 January 2005 20:21 (twenty-one years ago)

dunno if I've ever heard it all the way through, but based on the chorus:

Classic.

Great interview: https://daily.redbullmusicacademy.com/2015/06/key-tracks-bell-biv-devoe-poison

Elliot Straite:

When I made “Poison,” I was studying Kraftwerk. When I heard Kraftwerk’s Trans-Europe Express album and their “Numbers” record, it made me want to change my whole style and approach to music. It gave me the musical inspiration to do “Poison.” I’m also mixed with Black and Puerto Rican. I had uncles that played with big Latin bands like Tito Puente and Mongo Santamaria. You could hear the Latin elements in “Poison.” I wanted to bring the Latin element into that record by using timbales. When you hear them say “poison” at the end of the record? That came from Kraftwerk.

Also, I had no idea the Bomb Squad worked on this!

j.o.h.n. in evanston (john. a resident of chicago.), Sunday, 25 May 2025 03:22 (one year ago)

Weird, I've heard this song a million times and never thought of Kraftwerk, or Latin stuff. And still don't hear it? Always just fit snuggly into the New Jack Swing thing. Where are there timbales?

Josh in Chicago, Sunday, 25 May 2025 04:20 (one year ago)

I never would have made the connection either but after reading that can see a case for them in the drum sound.

j.o.h.n. in evanston (john. a resident of chicago.), Sunday, 25 May 2025 17:41 (one year ago)

I discovered Public Enemy thanks to seeing Hank Shocklee's name in the credits here.

hungover beet poo (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 25 May 2025 18:10 (one year ago)

You were right in 2005 about how this song’s OTT misogyny makes it a little less classic than it might otherwise be.

bad faith guy (morrisp), Sunday, 25 May 2025 18:33 (one year ago)

Only heard about them a couple of days ago when rewatching the pilot episode of my fav TV series, Northern Exposure, when the resident Native American youngster and all-things-media enthusiast mentions their new (1990) album ("I think it'll go platinum").
