Crammed Discs - s/d

Hi guys,

I'm sort of on a Crammed bender at the moment, mostly via Aksak Maboul and The Honeymoon Killers. I also have the Global Soundclash thing and now Congotronics.

I know nothing about this label. Tell me things and point out the wheat and the chaff.

Also feel free to recommend anything similar.

Thanks.

I only really now the 2 Aksak Maboul records, the first one seems to be Marc Hollander and friends and the second is more a band w/ Catherine Janioux, Chris Cutler, Fred Frith etc, both are pretty awesome, and the Honeymoon Killers. Hollander later had lots of sub labels and was/is involved with techno with SSR records.

yay, adam likes aksak maboul

Hollander plays a lot on Frith's Gravity, which you might like

Konono No. 1 gets an occasional charge of tokenism for various reasons, but you can't blame the label -- Konono is the kind of weird technological hybrid world-music-before-world-music-existed Crammed has been putting out since the early 80's, they're a very consistent stable

There is a chance you'd like Etron Fou Leloublan.

I've posted to these threads before, but you should get the Crammed Global Soundclash comps if you haven't got them already. Oh wait, I see you have them. That other thread was started with the other Honeymoon Killers in mind. I recommend Minimal Compact and Tuxedomoon in addition to what you've got.

i've always thought there was a lot of shit on crammed, but i'm not a fan of zazou bikaye (though i've heard a couple of good songs) or tuxedo moon or minimal compact, and those dudes seem to be all over the label.

i really like aksak maboul and honeymoon killers; so in that vein other things on the label or related to the label which i've found are great are:

--des airs (who are supposed to have a rerelease according to the site -- but that's been promised for a while now)
--hermine (http://www2.odn.ne.jp/airstructures/review%20newwave%20diva.html -- she also has her own website, but i can't remember the link. she's designed her own font, if i remember correctly)
--family fodder (who have a rerelease, though it unfortunately leaves out some of their best tracks).

I find Colin Newman's "Commercial Suicide" (now with two bonus tracks, which aren't anything special) the most interesting solo Wire work. It's not as Wire-like as his three prior solo albums ("A-Z," "Not To" and "Provisionally Entitled The Singing Fish"), but what it gives up in post-punk pop chaos it gains in beauty and majesty.

Dee Xtrovert (dee dee), Monday, 26 September 2005 22:52 (twenty years ago)

didn't realize that was on Crammed. Of course he's married to the woman from Minimal Compact, right? I know I said this on another thread, but Feigned Hearing from that album is currently my song of the moment.

is that sussan deyheim/rich horwitz disc on crammed? if so get that adam

mullygrubbr (bulbs), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 07:20 (twenty years ago)

I thought A C Marias was the most interested solo Wire work. But that's also Colin Newman, correct?

Dan Gr (certain), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 07:57 (twenty years ago)

"interesting," I mean

Dan Gr (certain), Tuesday, 27 September 2005 07:58 (twenty years ago)

A C Marias was with Bruce Gilbert, not Colin Newman, I believe.

Re Newman: It Seems, which followed Commercial Suicide was also released on Crammed, and is kind of in the same vein, but more overtly synthetic/intricately-sequenced. (I prefer it, btw.)

AC Marias = Bruce Gilbert + Angela Conway

The first Hector Zazou lp is pretty good. In general, you can't go wrong with any of the recent reissues (except that tedious Sonoko album).
And of course, Crammed automatically gets the classic status for hosting my favorite band, Tuxedomoon.

can i put in a vote for the morpheous compiled freezones on ssr/crammed. they may be scary precedents for the chillout plague but they were important to me back then- collecting tracks by 4hero, morgan geist, rythm & sound, carl craig et cet.

twelve years pass...

pleasantly surprised to see the 2nd Aksak Maboul album reviewed in pfork today. Both of the records are great -- all RIO/avant prog fans should seek out!

looking forward to picking that one up!

also the zazou bikaye and yasuaki shimizu's 'music for commercials' reissues were huge highlights of 2017 for me

Figures is such a ridiculously joyous pop record, there's so much of it and the whole thing is whirling sunshine brilliance. I had very little familiarity with the Aksak Maboul oeuvre prior to this and it's all great stuff but this feels like a decisive career peak.

one year passes...

Can anyone identify the track playing at 27 minutes into one of the recent Crammed specials on NTS?
