Hair Police are far and beyond the lousiest noise act getting a lot of hype. Not necessarily noise, but anything Jon Dwyer has been involved in post-Pink + Brown has been horrible (not to say P+B were teh awesome, but they had some relevatory moments, esp. live).

Merzbow I've never had any problems with.

BUT THEY LIVED THERE AT SOME POINT NO?, AND PUT RECORD(S) OUT ON LOAD?

ddb (ddb), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:51 (twenty-one years ago)

One of Sam McPheeters zines talks about going on tour with MRP and playing a show in Providence with Landed, Forcefield and Dropdead and being totally blown away. I'd say any of those bands better represent the Prov. scene than MRP. (Even Dropdead.)

xposts: Yes, they did! Burke still lives there. Sinking Body is pretty boring. One record on Load.

Ian c=====8 (orion), Tuesday, 17 August 2004 15:52 (twenty-one years ago)

i actually think dwyer is best when he takes his ritalin and does his solo OCS thing. otherwise, record or live, blech. best things he's been part of == Landed and Pink & Brown. things that piss me off -- he's part of the Hospitals now.

6FS and Dropdead are more flagships for Providence than MRP.

xpostzgalorez

THEY PLAY(ED) SHOWS WITH MINDFLAYER AND ARAB ON RADAR AND WHITE MICE AND LIGHTNING BOLT AND BLACK DICE.

Best 6FS moment: When 6FS had the same lineup as Landed except for different singer and 6FS played some fetival and switched singers after the first tune and finished the set as Landed. Dave Fischer has the whole story.

Actually I do like Beaches and Canyons - I fawned over it in some magazine (Skyscraper? Your Flesh? I forget). I just think, on the whole, they are WAY overrated for what they do. The press acts as if the undergrond noise / tape label culture never happened (perhaps because they are ignorant of it). But I can tell you that there are people on this board alone who have released stuff that eats with a spoon everything Black Dice has ever done.

Plus, they appear to be getting worse. Those first few 7"s RULED.

I stopped actually buying their stuff after the Troubleman 10." DFA? No thanks.

Certainly I believe any performer who achieves even a modicum of celebrity has essentially surrendered crafting sound for sound's sake, pandering to the peanut gallery of insensitive brutes. What's next for Black Dice? Guest appearances by famous rappers grabbing the mic and keeping it real?

b&c was okay i guess. i didn't keep it after i heard it. i like "creature comforts" better. it's like they just kept on moving further away from shit. "treetops" especially has more song structure than i'd ever imagine in a black dice song, yet it still sorta dangles like birds playing tom ze covers.

i still found a lot more thrill in a few mp3s i had when they were first putting their shit on the grill. that damaged post-hardcore shit that just devolved into unmanageable feedback noise was kinda thrilling on first contact.

ok, so what so bad about john dwyer/ocs?

i dont know OCS at all, but might be going to an OCS show tonite, in hoxton square. it is...bad noise?

terry lennox. (gareth), Monday, 17 October 2005 11:48 (twenty years ago)

even tho pink and brown and coachwhips have their definite moments, i think ocs is the one dwyer project i actually like.

it seems the one most devoid of gimmick/schtick or something.

someone once described him as the tom cruise of the underground punk/noise/weirdo scene... it didn't sound like a compliment.

m.

msp (mspa), Monday, 17 October 2005 14:40 (twenty years ago)

pink & brown had moments.. coachwhips had moments the first time i saw them when i was drunk/wasted one halloween back in the day. i have neither seen nor heard OCS.

i think dwyer is kind of a weirdo. calling him tom cruise is pretty close to the mark.

I SAW OCS A WHILE BACK....IT WAS FUCKING STUPID.

ddb (ddb), Monday, 17 October 2005 15:52 (twenty years ago)

i saw an OCS show about a month ago and i really dug it. the melodies and structures were VERY 60s psych (and not in the Elephant Six twee way) but burried under a bunch of noise and weird effects.

i talked to Dwy3r a few days ago at a Dungen instore, and he's a complete dweeb. he was talking about being stoned like he was a highschool rebel.

Mad SETI (jaxon), Monday, 17 October 2005 16:58 (twenty years ago)

my main beef comes from when msp and i went to see wolf eyes at the hemlock (2002 or 2003?) and dwyer was standing behind me (kinda near the front) screaming into the ear of this girl next to him about how wolf eyes was his favorite band ever and then went on to scream about all of his great new sideprojects for about 20 minutes... all the while wolf eyes was playing.

three years pass...

Thee Oh Sees (formerly OCS) is a duo consisting of John Dwyer (Coachwhips) and Patrick Mullins, both friends residing in SF, CA. It's is an unbelievable rare gift to see Dwyer stripped to an acoustic guitar and a collage of noise. Dwyer creates a more personal record that allows the listener to gain insight on the genius and inner workings of a modern leader in the underground music world. The melodies are beautiful, the songs as interesting if not more so than any of his other bands. A fan of any of his other projects will know that Dwyer's gonna mindfuck our heads good and proper. Just because Dwyer chose to put down his electric guitar and strum an acoustic, this can not be an "ordinary" singer songwriter, folk acoustic thing. In fact, OCS is as intense and soul grabbing as any band Dwyer's played in. The sonic layering, texture of sound and perfectly captured moods creates a completely original record.

i saw that dude last night after not seeing him out in a while. kept repeating to myself "i hate SF, i hate SF". his friend kyle rans0n had an art show at my friend's gallery (super rad stuff) and some of their friends performed. they told the owner it was going to be "gospel". the first track was really beautiful, spiritual, gospel inspired free jazz, and the other 2 songs were crazy firey freeblowing. pretty funny.
