ILM 2004 Songs & Albums Poll Brainstorm

OK, I'd like to hold this poll this year--and before people start complaining about how this poll is too soon, we just got done with the last one, etc., I'd like to remind them that that poll took about three months to get finished. I think I can get it done by new year's if we start now, and I don't think anybody wants to read an '04 year-end list in February. So anyway, some questions:

1. Is there any interest in doing this poll at all?

2. If so, should we bother with a nominations process--since there's such a (relatively) narrow pool of albums and songs to choose from?

3. Would people be interested in actually being contacted to write blurbs and make it look like a real publication's list?

just some things to think about. If it's clear that no one wants to do this poll, that's fine and I'll drop it, but if there's interest I at least would like to get it somewhat started.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Thursday, 25 November 2004 05:30 (twenty-one years ago)

If it happens I at least'd like a list of nominated recs otherwise I'll have no idea what came out.

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 25 November 2004 05:46 (twenty-one years ago)

Obv I'm highly qualified to participate

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 25 November 2004 05:46 (twenty-one years ago)

I don't think anybody wants to read an '04 year-end list in February.

Haha, tell that to Chuck Eddy!!

Sanjay McDougal (jaymc), Thursday, 25 November 2004 05:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Seriously, though, I don't think there should be a nomination process. I think it should just be your personal top 10s (or however many) -- it'll all shake out fairly nicely at the end.

Sanjay McDougal (jaymc), Thursday, 25 November 2004 05:49 (twenty-one years ago)

1. Hmmm ... take a guess as to what my answer will be.
2. No.
3. Sure, I'll write for it.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 25 November 2004 05:52 (twenty-one years ago)

You can't have too many lists. Surely there must be some site with release lists for the year? Anyway, yeah, I'm enthusiastic, and I'll help out if needed (writing, counting etc. Don't know which of those I'm worse at though).

Kevin Gilchrist (Mr Fusion), Thursday, 25 November 2004 05:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Prob other people'll vote for whatever I heard this year and I can use that, come to think of it. I guess. Someone vote for D. Siciliano, please.

Andrew Blood Thames (Andrew Thames), Thursday, 25 November 2004 05:54 (twenty-one years ago)

Surely there must be some site with release lists for the year?
DJ Martian's site is probably the best for our purposes.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 25 November 2004 05:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Oh, also, I'd definitely like to write a blurb or two.

Sanjay McDougal (jaymc), Thursday, 25 November 2004 06:08 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, I've always been semi-against the idea of nominees (too many crucial cuts get left behind) but do sort of agree that for a field as broad as the 90s, it's not a terrible idea to cut it down a bit for the sake of consensus. But for just one year...seems kind of pointless, since the field is so limited. For albums anyway.

That might not apply to songs, since so many are released in a given year, but I was thinking maybe we should make it singles-only anyway. After all, most of the songs that actually end up making these lists are singles anyway--I did a rough scan of the 90s list, and counted at most 10 songs that weren't singles. It wouldn't make much of a difference, except that I'd have to do a bit of singles policing.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Thursday, 25 November 2004 08:29 (twenty-one years ago)

i'd be interested.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 25 November 2004 10:29 (twenty-one years ago)

This would be a fun idea, and I'd definitely be up for writing blurbs. However, are we going to have to start it right away? The Girls Aloud album, which from what I've heard is a shoe-in for my list, has not been released yet (Nov 29).

The Lex (The Lex), Thursday, 25 November 2004 10:42 (twenty-one years ago)

Whatever happened to the latest "Forum"? Anyone know?

mark grout (mark grout), Thursday, 25 November 2004 11:02 (twenty-one years ago)

Well you'll have a while to get your lists in, so you can either wait for the Girls Aloud album to leak or be released before you vote.

x-post.

(Brainstorm has not released that many songs & albums in 2004, bah! ;)

t\'\'t (t\'\'t), Thursday, 25 November 2004 15:10 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm too busy working out my end-of-year top 50s for my own blog (I do two top 50s - one for reissues/comps/old stuff and another for new releases). As I'm going abroad for the holidays I suspect I'm going to have to start posting these lists about this time next week (i.e. beginning of December).

Marcello Carlin, Thursday, 25 November 2004 15:11 (twenty-one years ago)

Yeah, no nominations please, just straight lists for this one.

Matt DC (Matt DC), Thursday, 25 November 2004 15:17 (twenty-one years ago)

No nominations process, 2004 is still exploratory in terms of scope - for all of us.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 25 November 2004 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

go for it, with nominations and all.

Jay Kid (Jay K), Thursday, 25 November 2004 15:18 (twenty-one years ago)

I have 1127 tracks on my iPod bearing a date of 2004. This may take some time.

mike t-diva (mike t-diva), Thursday, 25 November 2004 15:23 (twenty-one years ago)

also people can check amazon.com/ amazon.co.uk - if they are unsure of release dates.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 25 November 2004 15:47 (twenty-one years ago)

Brilliant recent indie/alt-rock/whatever for those who've lost interest in/touch with it all a bit

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 25 November 2004 15:50 (twenty-one years ago)

Nice.

I'll come up with rules / regulations fairly soon.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Thursday, 25 November 2004 17:53 (twenty-one years ago)

LIL JON 'CRUNK JUICE'!!!

It obliterates the competition.

nasty!, Thursday, 25 November 2004 17:59 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm quite keen on splitting it into 3 categories:

1. Best song
2. Best artist album
3. Best dj mix / compilation

I think that adding the last category would help more non-indie stuff would get a look in. Obviously a complilation could be an indie one, but the 3rd category would be naturally biased toward dance stuff, in the same way that best artist album tends to favour the rokist vote

Also, i recokon that 10 in each category is a good number

Robin Goad (rgoad), Thursday, 25 November 2004 18:49 (twenty-one years ago)

So the compilation could be of old stuff?

Alba (Alba), Thursday, 25 November 2004 18:54 (twenty-one years ago)

in the same way that best artist album tends to favour the rokist vote
This is untrue, as evidenced from the huge hip-hop and pop contingents here, not to mention the 90's and 00's poll.
Best artist album favours the most-heard albums. Techno wasn't almost completely shut out in the 90's poll because the poll favours rock and hip-hop, it was shut out because a lot more people listen to rock and hip-hop than techno.
Sure, you can always create sub-categories to make sure that your favourite stuff is represented, but that merely dilutes the poll.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 25 November 2004 18:55 (twenty-one years ago)

3. Best dj mix / compilation

I like this idea a lot, actually, but it needs a bit more clarification. Are we talking only stuff like Kompakt 100 and Unclassics? Does it have to be only of stuff released this year (would Daddy G's classic-oriented DJ Kicks count, for instance?) Would non-dance comps like Les Savy Fav's Inches and BSS's Beehives count? What about artist comps like This is Music and 50,000 Fall Fans Can't Be Wrong?

It'll take some figuring, but I like the idea enough so let's make it work.

The Good Dr. Bill (Andrew Unterberger), Thursday, 25 November 2004 19:22 (twenty-one years ago)

Actually, if it's a reissues/comps/DJ mixes category, then I take back what I wrote above.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 25 November 2004 19:35 (twenty-one years ago)

In which case, everything in Dr. Bill's post would count.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 25 November 2004 19:36 (twenty-one years ago)

then I take back what I wrote above.
By that, I mean I tack back my thumbs down over whether or not to have a 3rd category, NOT my comments on polls.

Also: are the records in category 3 still eligible for the albums poll? In the interest of keeping the rules simple, the least complicated answer is no.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 25 November 2004 19:43 (twenty-one years ago)

Albums Poll: Should be new recordings not reissued material.

Everything else reissues/ box sets/ compilations/ dj mix compos in another.

Andy K does this on his blog: Doubt Beat
http://www.jodeeandy.com/doubtbeat/b2004.htm

If you complicate things further with more categories - this will cause confusion.

DJ Martian (djmartian), Thursday, 25 November 2004 19:55 (twenty-one years ago)

my feeling on the compilations / dj mix thing was to include all various artists albums released in 2004. This would include dj mix cds of old and new stuff - so would inlcude the dj kicks thing mentionned above - and any other various artist comps, whether containg new or old stuff: so the kompakt 100 or ragga ragga ragga types would be included, but also, say, a soul jazz compliations. these wouldn't have to be dance related, but it would probably be diased towards dance music (old and new), in the same way that single artis albums are biased towards indie / rock

things i don;t think we should include in the category are single artist comps (i,e the best of kylie) or single artist re-releases, e.g the pavement ones. These shoudl go into the best album category

My main reason for suggesting this is that i generally 'consume' more music as compilations and mixes than i do as single artist albums or songs, so i just wanted to get more influence i the poll ;-)

Robin Goad (rgoad), Friday, 26 November 2004 09:11 (twenty-one years ago)

in the same way that single artis albums are biased towards indie / rock
Can we put this myth to bed?

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 26 November 2004 09:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Think about worldwide consumption of music and how much of it is indie. Then look at that list and how much of that is indie. Of course there's a bias. This may be just because we have exquisite taste and the rest of the world is wrong, but you can't just wish the skewing away.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 26 November 2004 09:58 (twenty-one years ago)

'in the same way that single artis albums are biased towards indie / rock
Can we put this myth to bed?'

i don't mean that the actual albums are, i mean that the album polls tend to be, i think this is beacuse non indie / rock stuff tends be dispersed across a number of formats - singles, albums, comps, mixes - whereas indie tends to be album focussed. Therefore it is easier to pick 10 indie albums of the year, and there will liekly be some sort of cocencus on this - than 10 'dance' albums of the year.

Robin Goad (rgoad), Friday, 26 November 2004 10:29 (twenty-one years ago)

anyways, looking at the offical poll thread, it seems that we have a compilation / re-relaeae thread. Not exactly what I was suggesting, but almost there. I'm happy!

Robin Goad (rgoad), Friday, 26 November 2004 10:30 (twenty-one years ago)

I'm not denying that there is skewing, but as I said upthread, lots of people liking rock and voting for it in a poll != bias.

If rock dominates a poll, it's because most of the respondents prefer it, not because of any bias. The Basic Channel comp didn't fail to crack the top 100 of the 90's poll because the poll was intrinsically biased against techno, it didn't make it because there are more hip-hop, pop and indie rock fans than techno fans.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 26 November 2004 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Anyhow, I'm not trying to start an argument here, I just wanted to clarify what I was trying to say.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 26 November 2004 17:13 (twenty-one years ago)

Ah right. I'd still call that bias, it's just a case of where the bias stems from.

I half agree with you about that issue, but I still think there's something in what Robin says about dance (not home-listening electronic music) not being about albums so much. I mean, I think it would be hard to deny that, 12"s being the lifeblood of the genre.

Alba (Alba), Friday, 26 November 2004 17:32 (twenty-one years ago)

True, but it's not like we're in 1992, when the very concept of a house or techno album was foreign to a lot of people. We're hardly starved for choice, but yes, labels that release mostly 12"'s do get screwed over in polls like this, but I think that's moreso because most people don't buy vinyl rather than anything specific to the genre. So basically, any label that doesn't have a CD comp out will likely be ignored in this poll. But the ones that do will hopefully get well represented in the comps/reissues category.

MindInRewind (Barry Bruner), Friday, 26 November 2004 17:43 (twenty-one years ago)

I am still planning on murdering Andrew Unterberger. That's ANDREW UNTERBERGER. Nick Southall is going to MURDER you.

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Monday, 29 November 2004 13:44 (twenty-one years ago)

I think everything should go in the same poll, new albums, reissues, comps, dj mixes, old stuff which hasn't been reissued but which you've just discovered. It seems a little ageist that an album can't make the best of poll just because it was released 30+ years ago.

Billy Dods (Billy Dods), Monday, 29 November 2004 13:52 (twenty-one years ago)

what's the name of the thread that this thread produced?

Raymond Cummings (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 29 November 2004 16:05 (twenty-one years ago)

I am still planning on murdering Andrew Unterberger. That's ANDREW UNTERBERGER. Nick Southall is going to MURDER you.

I can't wait to hear what this is about.

The Good Dr. Bill (The Good Dr. Bill), Monday, 29 November 2004 19:50 (twenty-one years ago)

It's about you and your FUCKING LISTS, that's what!

Sick Mouthy (Nick Southall), Monday, 29 November 2004 19:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Whatever, Southy, stop obsessing about me and my lists. Go out and get some fresh air or something.

BAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAH
